1 lesson material: lesson one focus lesson The Inside of the Poem Vs. the Outside of the Poem Consider the following: The Image of a Human Form What do we see on the outside? Think about three words or pictures that come to mind when you think of the outside of a person versus the inside of a person. 3 lesson material: lesson three focus lesson Adolescence is the transitional time of growth and development between childhood and adulthood. Adolescence is a name for the period in the life span between ages 12 and 20 and is roughly equivalent with the term teens. In many societies, adolescence is equated with puberty and the cycle of physical changes ending in reproductive maturity. Western societies understand adolescence in terms of a broader sense of development that is, it includes mental, social, and moral changes as well as the strictly physical aspects of maturation. Encyclopedia Brittanica, Vocabulary list and Glossary transitional roughly equivalent puberty moral maturation roughly equivalent pecan wise firefly to whir miniature feathery moving from one stage to another almost, pretty much equal to the time during adolescence when bodily changes begin having to do with right and wrong the process of growing up almost, pretty much equal to a kind of nut intelligent, smart an insect that lights up at night to move so as to produce a buzzing or vibrating sound reduced in size, tiny like a feather, or the soft material that covers a bird s skin Copyright The Johns Hopkins University. 4 lesson material: lesson five focus lesson my Papa s Waltz This whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death: Such waltzing was not easy. We romped until the pans Slid from the kitchen shelf; My mother s countenance Could not unfrown itself. The hand that held my wrist Was battered on one knuckle; At every step you missed My right ear scraped a buckle. You beat time on my head With a palm caked hard by dirt, Then waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your shirt. Theodore Roethke 114 Copyright The Johns Hopkins University. All Rights Reserved.

5 lesson material: lesson seven reading showcase annabel lee It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. She was a child and I was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love I and my Annabel Lee With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud by night Chilling my Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulcher In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me Yes! that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud chilling And killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we Of many far wiser than we And neither the angels in Heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can every dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And stars never rise but I see the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride, In her sepulcher there by the sea In her tomb by the side of the sea.
