1 Surreal life: Pacino plays Dali in biopic By Borys Kit Jan 19, 2007 Al Pacino is reuniting with writer-director Andrew Niccol for "Dali & I: The Surreal Story," Room 9 Entertainment's follow-up to its successful political satire "Thank You for Smoking." Pacino will play Dali in the movie, which will span the 1960s-80s, a time when most of Dali's great work was behind him and he became more flamboyant. The story also will focus on a mentor-protege relationship between Dali and Stan Lauryssens, a young art dealer. Room 9 partners David O. Sacks, Daniel Brunt and Michael R. Newman are producing. A June start date is planned. Room 9 originally acquired the project as a spec written by John Salvati, based on Lauryssens' autobiographical book "Dali and I." Niccol is rewriting the script. Room 9 and NBC/Universal are developing a television series based on "Smoking." CAA-repped Pacino starred in Niccol's 2002 sci-fi drama "Simone." He next appears in "Ocean's Thirteen," which Warner Bros. Pictures will release June 8, and in Millennium Films' "88 Minutes."

Al Pacino has reportedly signed on to play the famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali in an upcoming biopic based on the book Dali & I: The Surreal Story by Stan Lauryssens. From what I understand (and also expect, based on his work) Salvador Dali was a pretty eccentric guy, and he created some of the strangest art from the last century (he also apparently designed the logo for Chupa Chups lollipops!). The movie will focus on the latter part of his life, when he was at his most surreal, as it were. The thing that I m most excited about here is the fact that Andrew Niccol is directing, the guy who wrote and directed Gattaca and Lord of War, and also penned The Truman Show (okay, so he also wrote and directed the Pacino dud S1m0ne as well). We've already told you about the planned Salvador Dali biopic on more than one occasion -- first, when it was announced and then again when Andrew Niccol thankfully took away directing duties from the guy who brought us Con Air and the remake of When A Stranger Calls (yes, I'm talking about Simon West). Based on Stan Lauryssens' book, Dali and I: The Surreal Story will primarily focus on the surrealist painter's latter years -- when it became less about the art and more about the money, the fame and the power. Niccol, who wrote and directed the fantastic Gattaca, as well as Lord of War (he also penned The Truman Show), last teamed up with Pacino on S1m0ne (or Simone). Yeah, so I guess they're looking for -- what's the right word -- oh yeah, a do-over. I'm actually a huge fan of Dali's work (don't tell anyone, but a giganto print of Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach currently hangs over my living room couch) and, though I'm not well-versed on the man's life, I am very curious to learn more about who he was and why he loved melting clocks... aside from the fact that they look really cool on a dorm room wall. w w.cinematical.com

The film is based on an adaptation on the Stan Lauryssen book "Dali and I." Andrew Niccol, who previously directed Pacino in "Simone," will direct. The film will be produced by Room 9 partners David O. Sacks, Daniel Brunt and Michael R. Newman, who worked together for "Thank You For Not Smoking." The biopic covers the life of Salvador Dali through the eyes of Stan Lauryssens, an art dealer who knew Dali and his wife Gala personally. It centers the latter days of Dali, which Niccol describes as the period in which the painter took his career in its most "surreal" direction.
