3 Amazing Harriet Tubman Rosemary Irwin February 26th 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room Patrick Henry is remembered for the phrase: Give me liberty or give me death. Harriet Tubman said: "There was one of two things I had a right to--liberty or death. If I could not have one, I would have the other." While Henry's phrase was catchy and seemed to characterize the Revolutionary War, Tubman's is remembered because it aptly described her tremendous faith and courage. Her life spanned two centuries and she freed so many slaves through her work on the underground railroad, she earned the nickname Moses. In the Civil War, she was both soldier and nurse and afterwards, when she made Auburn, New York her home, she joined Susan B. Anthony in the women s rights movement. Come learn about our miraculous local hero! 5 Guided Meditation Cork Dinan January 3rd 2:00pm and every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter Media Room We live in the fast lane of an ever-changing world, running in place while trying to catch up with everchanging technology. Everyday we face enormous challenges juggling finances, family, career, and relationships which is exhausting because it feel like we re running on empty. But how do we get from a place of stress and anxiety, to connect with that place of peace and power within? How do we restore balance and reclaim our innate life force to live freely and fully? Meditation! Meditation is a practice of aligning your mind, body and spirit by going deep within to access the power of your belief to create what you truly desire. Guided meditation, deep relaxation and mind-body techniques are not passing fads, trends, or New Age nonsense. They are researched and proven approaches that have lasting benefits for radiant health, happiness and self-empowerment. How to Age in Place Michelle Kennison March 5th 2:00pm Multi Purpose Room Aging in place means a person being able to live in the place of their choice without losing their quality of life when they reach senior age. But ideally "Aging in Place" is not just maintaining the quality of life that the person is used to, but also it's making it better whenever possible. It generally means a person is making a conscious decision to stay in the residence of their choice for as long as they can with the comforts that are important to them. As they age these may include adding supplementary services to facilitate their living conditions and maintain their quality of life. This class will review the options available to you.

6 How to Stay Happy Rosemary Irwin January 22nd 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room There s a birthday of worldwide importance happening at Harvard University this year; The Harvard Study of Adult Development turns 80 years old. This study gathers data to answer the simple question: how do people change over time? While the study s original participants were from Harvard s class of 1939, it was extended to wives, children, and even grandchildren of the original participants and to men and women in different ethnic and economic groups. Today, it is the longest continually running scientific study in world history. Hidden in all this data are stories of what works. And George Vaillant M.D. s Triumphs of Experience: The Men of the Harvard Grant Study tells the good news about what healthy aging looks and feels like. Come learn and discuss what real life revealed to Harvard. Kerela - The Influence of Black Gold and the Black Waters Beth Brancato February 7th 1:00pm Multi Purpose Room Pepper was the main commodity exported from Kerala. It was the Greeks and Romans who popularized the use of pepper in Europe. They used pepper for preserving food and also as a medicine. The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. Looking Good! No Sweat! 7 Mark Twain and the Civil War Rosemary Irwin April 23rd 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room To this day, US casualties in the Civil War have exceeded those of all the wars our nation has known. Young men in America would have been on the Rebel Side, the Union side, or might have escaped the battles and lived the Gold Rush reality of the Western settlers. Mark Twain once boasted: I am not an American; I am THE American. Amazingly, he was, at different times, rebel, union, and gold rush Westerner. Much of the way we see the Civil War is directly related to Mark Twain--his actions, his writings, and the important writings he published. Come hear about and discuss Mark Twain s Civil War. Memory: What you never knew and what you need to know Rosemary Irwin March 21st 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room More than any other quality, memory defines our existence. The fact it evolves and changes can be deeply frightening. Much of what we've believed about memory, current science contradicts. But brain science is showing a much greater human ability to keep the memory system working smoothly. Knowing the facts can be reassuring--even life enhancing. North Korea, on theater hand remains locked in vacuum or struggle and despair. Once Upon a Sundae Anne Tubbs March 1st 2:00pm Cafe This is a hands-out, spoons-on class! Here beats Orissa s primordial heart. The tribal people showcase a rainbow of oriental culture and cultural trappings, which are held beautiful in an ethnic kaleidoscope. Subsistence oriented economy of the tribes here is based on food gathering, hunting and fishing, thus, revolving around forests. And what is potpourri you may ask? It is a mixture of spices and dried flowers that are typically kept in a decorative bowl and used to perfume a room. Instead of a bowl, we will use decorative organza drawstring bags. Once completed, you can hang them anywhere in your apartment to keep the scent alive and well. Practicing Mindfulness Cork Dinan January 4th 11:00am and every Friday thereafter Media Room Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what s going on around us. While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis. Whenever you bring awareness to what you re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you re being mindful. And there s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain. Rochester Goes Shopping Dan Cody January 14th 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room In the mid-1800 s when mass production began creating all sorts of home appliances, ready-made clothing, canned goods and the like, goods once available only to the wealthy became inexpensive enough to be available to a growing middle class. With this came the department store, which quickly learned the importance of fantasy, indulgence, and convenience to customers? Shopping became not just an errand, but an experience, and, advertising became an important component of this.

10 Rochester in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic Dan Cody April 2nd 3:00pm Multi Purpose Room In the fall of 1918, the Great War was coming to an end. However, another great war was just starting. This was the war against influenza, an epidemic that killed millions worldwide in just a few short months. Rochester was not immune from the ravages of influenza. That was the beginning of ArborArt Workshops. Since March of 2009, ArborArt has been conducting workshops for 4-H groups, schools, senior centers, scout troops, recreation departments and libraries on weekly, monthly or one-time bases. Each session has been created to give participants the opportunity to build useful items from wood, using a variety of skills in assembling, sanding, drilling, nailing, gluing, staining and finishing.
