Living under unrealistic economic pressures, wars, and stressful schedules, there is little time and peace of mind to engage in personal freedom, creativity and activities that foster love. Urban life has become far too complicated, and in many instances, has become a transportation nightmare. So what is needed for the Gaian Mind to be happy and free of centuries of suffering is for the collective imagination to envision a new container or the miniaturization of the city an arcology developed with sustainable technologies. For this to be accomplished, greater global cooperation and social synergy is required to deliver duration: an environmentally stable world order based on arcology which has the potential to bring us far more personal and social liberty. When the Complexity Miniaturation Duration imperative is set into motion, we experience Lovolution, a non-violent planetary transformation that activates a radical shift in the way we govern ourselves and ultimately, the way we design cities, work and live within them. Soleri writes, Complexification is the metaphysical side of Miniaturization without which M is hollow, a container in search of a content, a mechanism devoid of intent. What I am realizing as I write these paragraphs is that complexification is the evolving pattern, the mind of Gaia or planetary consciousness that is intent on saving the biosphere from being destroyed for sentient beings. Without this spiritual goal, M remains hollow and unable to spark the Lovolution needed to set the new pattern of local/global cooperation and synergy into motion. 3 Greater Complexity, Freedom, and Order We are moving from a nation state system of a perpetual war economy that has led us down the highway to social incivility and chaos, global warming, and the threat of nuclear war, to one that uses conscious evolution to plan a more complex global system. To do this, it is vital that we visualize the city in a radically new way, what Paolo Soleri calls arcology, a design where architecture and ecology work as one integral process. To evolve beyond social alienation and war to a more complex model requires us to understand Soleri s formula of the Complexity Miniaturization Duration. Life from bacteria to deity is continuously becoming more complex. As human science, technology, communications network and knowledge of human behavior and cultures become more multifaceted, our social and physical organizations also need to evolve. But architecture and housing patterns within cities haven t changed for thousands of years. Our perceptions and ideas have transformed the way we see the world and ourselves, but the container which we house ideas hasn t made dramatic shifts. Consequently, our concepts have outgrown the container. Now, because of this lack of structural evolution, we are in an urban and energy crisis that is threatening the biosphere with global climate change. We must change or perish. Soleri explains that miniaturization is the container for complexity. Think of complexity as the nervous system, or in communication terms, as the Internet, the beginning of a Global Brain. Since it (the Internet) is more metaphysical than physical, let s give this matrix a more poetic name, the Gaian Mind made up of interdependent souls that make up the network. We are at the point in the evolution of our communication technologies that they are making life more complicated and stressful rather than simplifying and bringing meaning into our lives. The purpose of looking at the past is so that we can understand the present in order to have the foresight needed to build a civilization that lives in balance with Nature. Gaia Religion isn t like the patriarchal religions that have a pyramid hierarchy where there is a priestly class of enlightened ones who hold the knowledge that the rest of us are unable to obtain. Gaia brings us back in touch with the bacterial cells within us so that we achieve a workable blueprint of a happy and healthy society for all sentient beings on the planet. In addition to Gaia Religion s embracing of evolutionary spirituality, its specific mission is to create a network of evolutionary city designs arcologies on Earth and in Outer Space to either prevent or, if necessary, to survive a dramatic global climate change. Arcologies are living machines that integrate our technologies with the web of life. I am aware that many people feel that our age-old problems of war, poverty, etc. are caused by religion and thus humanity doesn t need another religion over which to fight. They see religion as the problem because it can lead to dogmatic thinking that stifles creative process. The strategy among some New Age thinkers is to reject all religion out of hand the and to strive to realize a global spirituality, to uncover the spirit that has been the kernel inspiration for all the great world religions. The goal of evolutionary spirituality is to acknowledge that we are members of a human family and therefore must focus on our common interests. I have no basic disagreement with this point of view. My only feeling is that it simply doesn t go far enough. To evolve into a global culture and economy of love where humans act as a single system, and where everyone s needs 20 Gaia Gaia 1

4 are met and their highest ideals are liberated, requires us to embrace a new belief or value system. It moves us beyond the constricting and failing patriarchal institutions that have been built and maintained over the centuries to the point of waging world wars to protect their dogmas. Our task is to evolve beyond temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques as the holy architecture surrounded in a secular world, to seeing the entire planet as sacred space. We all share in the responsibility to maintain the life-support systems by using science and technology to advance us ethically to new levels of existence. To visualize the way out of the social and inefficient lifestyle patterns, patriarchal religions along with commercial forces have not produced, a whole new belief and value system, a new meme-complex is needed. The Gaia world view asserts that all transmitted knowledge involves meme transference. Memes are analogous to genes except that they work on the cultural plane within the Noosphere to propagate information patterns. Memes are idea-viruses. When a person has been infected by a meme, their behavior is altered. Exposed to an idea-virus, the meme works quickly to infect the brain s neurons to open up (or to shut down) channels of thought. As neurons fire in the case of exposure to positive ideas, connections are made that build a blueprint for survival within us. When memes form symbiotic relationships with one another, they co-evolve into a meme-complex. The Noosphere is thinking layer or mind space of the Earth, a place inhabited by our archetypes, dreams, imagination, and prayers. It is the region where thought, creativity, reasoning, remembering, and decision-making take place. In the Noosphere meme-complexes take form and evolve as in the biosphere the zone of life on Planet Earth biological evolution takes form. The Noosphere is the realm of cultural evolution where morphogenesis the coming into being of form takes place. In this space, a new global morphic field is emerging of ever-tightening webs of cutting edge economics, politics, social systems, 2 Gaia more freedom and complexity to emerge than was possible in the pre-visionary dinosaur, fossil fuel, crime ridden, war-centered cities. This is the way we cooperatively ascend to Eden that state of bliss found in the Eternal Now because only this way can we preserve the world for our children and grandchildren. The time of the great detachment from the old institutions and unsustainable, patriarchal housing patterns has finally come! We are the people of the Quantum Leap! We are moving to our true home, the place where we can be who we really are, universal humans with open hearts eager to explore the inner levels of our minds as well as the outer limits of the stars. The Secret emphasizes the attitude of gratitude. So here is my final visualization. I m grateful to the universe the rich have invested their money in Lovolution. We are in the process of making a documentary video interviewing social visionaries called Lovolution Faze One. To continue my revised visualization: the resources, genius, talent, and marketing necessary to make a world-class documentary that changes the vibration of the planet is here now, using the law of attraction to pull us forward on the evolutionary spiral. First comes the consciousness shift uniting the collective will to build the New Age of arcologies, and then comes the fun part, making the blueprints real. Envision living in a solar-powered world where all creation is respected for the essence of its being. All humans have their basic human needs met, and have the time and resources to develop their soul s gift. Nature has the space it needs to be wild and beautiful, doing its job of regulating the climate for our protection and comfort. see rich people and nations pooling their resources together I to construct a foundation of a 21 st century architecture based on social justice and universal love. I see the people s tax money once wasted on buying bullets, guns, tanks, fighter jets, aircraft carriers, ballistic missiles, and nuclear weapons now going into altering our unsustainable cities into arcologies. have steadfast faith that the rich leaders of the new spirituality movement have heard the secret in time! I hear I them urging their audiences to contribute to Lovolution a non-violent world-wide movement to build a loving community of sacred arcologies. Through their books, tapes, and web sites, New Age thinkers are teaching people that the move from private to public modes of high-tech transportation within pedestrian-oriented arcologies is practical and gives everyone equal access to the wealth of the world. Visualizing new modes of transportation within a new city design is but one component needed to create the infrastructure for a fourth dimensional, global democracy that allows science, knowledge, and technology. Different disciplines are interacting, reordering global systems to build a more complex civilization with greater freedom. When enough people have been infected by this Gaia meme-complex, a planet code will open up an evolutionary pathway to global transformation. The meme-complex of Gaia builds an overarching design framework which understands Nature to be a conscious co-evolutionary process. As more and more people become aware of the Gaia blueprint, this knowledge advances consciousness to a new level of thought and action, building a strategy for administering the planet code of our survival. It provides us with an epic love story of our relationship within the Cosmos so that we can build a planetary ecological management system. The sacred icon of Gaia Religion is the Earth seen from Outer Space. Gaia is the life-force interacting with inanimate materials that work to regulate the climate necessary in order for life on the planet to evolve. To reach our next stage of evolution where we begin to see the whole planet as living system requires us to build a new foundation based on the attainment and power of love. metaphor that best describes Gaia is seeing the planet as the A largest living complex cell in our solar system. The planet cell is becoming aware that it is on the verge of giving birth to a new consciousness. Not only is it unconsciously dividing (reproducing) by binary fission through prokaryotic cells to create two identical daughter cells, but more importantly it is reproducing through conscious human sexual reproduction that allows for the memetic blending necessary to create a new species. Since individually we can be said to be the neurons of Gaia, our creative love partnerships are essential to Gaia s reproductive process. Through our love, we are on the verge of creating new worlds, morphing into a magnificent Superorganism, a balance between agape and erotic love. As with all things in the evolving universe, sexuality is changing form, evolving from the simple desire 18 Gaia Gaia 3

6 for biological reproduction as a means to our individual genetic survival to a suprasexuality based on the desire for planetary reproduction as a means for our species survival. In an overpopulated world, it is essential to realize the importance of moving from gene-based sexuality the joining of our genetic codes required for bringing more children into the world to a meme-based sexuality, the joining of our genius codes to create a new world. Genius codes are the essential creative gifts we are endowed with at birth and, when given the proper support and nourishment, are able to actualize. The romantic attraction between people in Gaia Religion is the desire to join genius codes. Sexual arousal becomes the conscious desire to fuse our creative ideas with others in order to create a new state of affairs. This can happen in homosexual as well as heterosexual contexts. Biologists note that 99% of species that have existed on Earth have gone extinct. One explanation for this is the tragic disappearance of species niches. Indeed, with the current volume of human population growth, global pollution, and global conflicts that could result in the use of weapons of mass destruction, the extinction of our species is all too likely. Secondly, a species goes extinct because it evolves into a new species. In the near future, certain technological achievements could make it possible for humans to become superhumans, cyborgs. For example, embedding computer chips in the human brain could make all human knowledge and language accessible at lightning fast speeds. third and final way species go extinct is because they split A into two or more species. We see the beginning of such a split in an elementary form by looking at the difference in brain power between the information have and have-nots, the great digital divide. Those privileged to have Internet access have the Global Brain at their fingertips, whereas those without access do not have the stimulation necessary for their neurons to become sphere. Building new car-free, ecological cities arcologies an architectural concept developed by Paolo Soleri, could be a way to achieve, not only individual success, but species success, which is necessary for the ultimate liberation of people and their societies. If only the secret club composed of the fraction of one percent of the wealthy elite would invest their energy in constructing a prototype arcology, then maybe they would be part of the solution. Manifesting arcology would give rich folks, who have presumably learned the secret, a chance to help those who need it the most. Not only would they be developing a new archetype in architecture, but new integrated forms of social architecture in the areas of health, education, communication, government, justice and economic systems wired together with 21 st Century technologies. Then, perhaps everybody would believe that there is really something good about The Secret because if the secret can t be manifested for everyone, well, it really doesn t matter, does it? We will be extinct, just like all the other species undergoing mass extinction due to human inability to design a lifestyle that works in harmony with Nature. Creating peace arcologies is possible and necessary for the survival of our species. No longer can success be measured in terms of the individual, but in terms of the transformation of our species into creatures with a divine lifestyle deeply rooted in what Martin Luther King called the Beloved Community, sharing and using wisely the resources of Gaia. We don t need people imagining any more cars. Our cities have been destroyed because of the dominance of the car and its needs. The annual rate of growth of the car industry in China is 20% a year, making our world even more of an auto hell. We need to envision riding on a clean, safe mass transit system working as efficiently as our blood stream. Using our collective intelligence, we can do this humanity! S o, here is my transmutation of The Secret s visualization technique: Visualize a planetary metamorphosis. Focus on it with unwavering faith. Realize that we create our own real- 4 Gaia Gaia 17

7 full of new resources soon enough to avert a collision course between the haves and have-nots and sustain the current lifestyle consumption rate of the First World? Because if everyone consumed as much as Canfield by following the teachings of The Secret, there would be no biosphere! There just isn t enough clean air, water, soil and landmass left to go on living the America dream celebrity/fantasy culture, and this is a scientific fact. As an image of a low-caste Indian snake charmer appears on the screen, metaphysician Joe Vitale asserts that not everyone wants the mansion, the BMW, the fabulous vacations, and the new clothes. Is Vitale suggesting that some of us actually want to live in urban slums? One out of six people on Earth, or one billion people, live in Third World slums. More than a billion people don t even have access to clean water. That number could double in 30 years. But you would never know it from viewing The Secret. When you see someone in the film from the Third World, they look happy working in the rice paddies, likely growing mono culture crops to be consumed by the First World. The teachers in the film tell us that there is no need to worry about our resources being used up. John Assaraf says, Just when we think resources are dwindling, we find new resources to achieve the same things. I hope they have a secret plan to bring back the polar ice caps, old growth forests, and restore the extinct species that are gone because of their chosen lifestyle. So, the real secret the big question is how to evolve our egocentric American dream into a planetary dream that can work for 100% of humanity? How do we move from a fragmented consciousness that focuses on me, mine, and yours to a unitive consciousness? How do we change from this individualistic, all me, status quo to the primordial state that recoveries our collective wisdom? The truth is that wanting a new car and big house is not going to bring about peace. Instead, such thinking utilizes what could be called the law of distraction, to escape the reality that the private car and the American lifestyle are destroying the bio- 16 Gaia activated in order for the planet code to emerge within them. Unlike biological evolution where a species splits off because of biological recombination and mutation, the split between superhumans and humans is based on meme mutation involving cultural and technological advances. Splitting our species into two different species is an undesirable scenario for us because it creates two classes of human beings inferior and superior ones which is an ancient formula for class warfare and with it the possibility of nuclear holocaust. The alternative and best scenario is that the meme of Gaia infect us with a vision of the oneness of the Cosmic continuance what is good and evolutionary for one is good and evolutionary for all. Either we evolve together, developing an Gaia culture, or perish together, ridding the Universe of a species that wasn t intelligent enough to evolve into Homo universalis! Evolving together means that our goal is to build a planetary culture where everyone has equal access to the technology and resources of the world. To do this means that it is imperative that we design our cities into arcologies, designed with the purpose of eliminating poverty and creating global social equity. Gaia 5

Even though the anti-war movement of the 1960s and early 1970s didn t stop other wars from occurring, it strongly helped end the war in Vietnam. Likewise, the anti-slavery movement didn t put an end to racism, but it did make slavery illegal in the United States. The anti-sexism of the women s movement didn t stop sexism, but it did make it possible for a woman to become a head of corporation or get elected to public office. Even though the anti-pollution movement hasn t restored our balance with nature, it has resulted in some corporations adjusting their pollution levels. Can you imagine what kind of world we would live in today if there had not been resistance movements that were lead by such luminaries as Mahatma Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela? The secret, according to its teachers, is that there is a law of attraction, and that we live in a universe full of abundance. There is enough for everyone. If you want a new car, all you have to do is imagine yourself driving a new car and somehow the genie of the universe will manifest it for you. In the film, philosopher Bob Proctor states that the one percent of American society owns 96% of the wealth because they possess the secret to manifest wealth. Now that the secret is out, anyone can become part of the secret class! An example of this power is seen in the life of Jack Chicken Soup Canfield. Canfield tells us of his humble roots raised by an abusive father, who taught him that rich people stole their wealth from the poor. But when he met W. Clement Stone, who taught him the secret, he was able to become super-rich, have a multi-million dollar house, take vacations to all the paradise hotspots around the world, and be married to a beautiful wife. I f most people want the American Dream as Jack Canfield infers, how will our planet be able to support the endless supply of universal consumer catalogue of goods? Do we seriously believe that astronomers will discover six Earth-like planets 6 Gaia Gaia 15

9 No More Secrets: Some Comments on the film, The Secret That is what I am made for; I am made for Eden. Thomas Merton The Secret deals with a positive psychology of loving and knowing yourself. It calls one to do the work you were called by the Spirit within you to do. I yearn to embrace the message of the documentary film, but part of the message of the film I cannot embrace because it can never lead to a better world for all. The secret I have been searching for is, to quote Bucky Fuller, how do we make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense, or the disadvantage of anyone? Fuller was convinced that we have, for the first time in history, the ability to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. He wrote, All humanity now has the option to become enduringly successful. He thought that to achieve this success requires us to reorient world production away from weaponry from killingry to livingry. In one sequence of The Secret, the teachers clearly imply that social protest movements haven t worked to create world peace because they are anti-something. Jack Canfield, founder of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series says, You know the anti-war movement creates more war. He says that by focusing on what we don t want we give energy to the thing we don t want. So the secret is to focus on trust, love, living in abundance, education and peace rather than resist the problem. According to The Secret, the teachers say if you are anti-war, be pro-peace. 10 Analogy of Gaia, A Planetary Life Cell: The Cosmos is composed of the interaction of holons that form a Gestalt, a set of physical, biological, and symbolic units that creates a unified concept that makes up an integrated design pattern. One holon rests upon the another holon, a whole system within a whole system in which the configuration or pattern is greater than the sum of its parts. Each holon is more complex than the next in the development sequence. It is simultaneously a part and a whole, local and global at the same time, in a bidirectional flow between the microcosm and the macrocosm. A holon is effected by and effects larger holons. The more fundamental holons make the framework for which more complex holons can evolve. Hence, the more complex holons are dependent on the more fundamental holons, but the more complex or advanced holons are more significant to the cosmic evolutionary order. For example, eukaroyotic cells (animal and plant cells) are made of the more fundamental holon of prokaryotic cells (bacteria). This means that the Cosmos has spent more energy to develop us. We are more significant to cosmic evolution than the lower holons because they represent so little cosmic energy. Eukaryotic cells represent more significance because we are composed of more holons that make up our being: atoms, molecules, prokaryotes, and eukaryotic cells that form multi-cellular organisms. The human body is at the same time a whole self-organizing system within itself that shapes the individual as well as it is a part of the species. The holon of humanity is both a holon within itself and a part of the larger planetary holon of life on Earth. With each phase of holon complexity we see an gradual rise in consciousness. We understand the biosphere as an integrated superorganism where the health of each part is dependent on the health of the whole planetary system. It is important to recognize the holon of humanity in our continuing cosmic evolution. We move from the more fundamental holon of the eukaryotic cell, to the holon of the 8 Gaia prokaryotes faced a similar crisis. To survive their crisis they began cooperating with their enemies forming a new relationship that created the eukaryotic cell, a membrane that protected the various organelles within the cell from the toxic oxygenated atmosphere that they can created. The quantum leap we must make is a great and revolutionary as the forming of a new cell! Modern cities already have various components that reflect organelles within the cell. There is a waste and recycling system, a nutrient intake system, a transportation system, an energy system, a communication system, etc. What our cities don t have is a membrane that protects us from the toxic environment that we thoughtlessly created. City walls surrounding ancient cities had such a protective barrier. But the megalopolis is like a cancer, out-of-control-growth of urban sprawl. To cure ourselves of this disease requires holistic thinking. We have to re-envision the city membrane and organize the various components within the city to function within the membrane as effectuality as organelles work within complex cells. Arcology, the evolution of the city, becomes the membrane of the planetary cell. It is made up of the web of interconnected knowledge and wisdom disciplines like that of differentiated cells that make up the various organelles within plant and animal cells. When intellectual disciplines work in cooperation as they do within the human body, the cooperation of disciplines make up a cell-body-arcology-planetary cosmic design system. Cities evolving into arcologies become living organisms, organic machines that carry out our life-support activities as efficiently as the maintenance processes that happen within the cell. To live in harmony with life means to reflect the organization of the cell. Since human society is part of this cellular principle, to build a healthy city design, we need to model ourselves from cell structure. W hen a society drops one set of design memes for another, one civilization pattern for another, this is called a quantum leap. It happens through cooperation and a deeply creative partnership with one s self, others, and the Cosmos. Thus, holocracy is a love regime and the transformation of the landscape and mental sphere that occurs through its practice is a lovolution, a world-wide non-violence revolution that has the purpose of building a network of arcologies on Earth and into Outer Space. Arcologies are the containers where self-organizing miniaturization of the biosphere can emerge so that technology and biology are used to form an entirely new type of human civilization. Arcology, a new archetype of architecture, remains a hollow idea unable to manifest unless it is founded on the invisible social architecture based on the principles of holocracy. The mission of Gaia Religion and the formation of holocracy then are to be the underlying invisible foundation of arcology, the esoteric wisdom necessary to bring us back into alignment with our planetary source, Gaia. Holocracy unites the sexes to work for the greater whole to construct solar-power arcologies. Holocracy creates a morphic field needed to activate the quantum leap, the planetary reproduction of Gaia. Presently, modern city development doesn t reflect a healthy eukaryotic cell. It reveals that humanity is out-of-control, a cancer-like growth that acts like a planetary parasite sucking up the nutrients and leaving behind a polluted wasteland of urban sprawl. Uncontrollable growth has lost the bidirectional flow between smaller and larger holons. Cancer cells fail to differentiate and the system breaks down when the holons are no longer aware of their dependence on their subsidiary parts, and the parts don t recognize the organizing authority of the whole. In modern cities the parts have no vision for the whole and so it is killing itself as in our nation-state nuclear weapons world of the American Dream house. As we face a global pollution and population crisis that is causing global climate change that threatens our very existence, history is repeating itself. Our primitive ancestors, the 12 Gaia human body, to the holon of the organization of the city, to the holon of humanity. Understanding this sequence allows us to discover the design blueprint we need to live by to develop a harmonic relationship with the Planet Earth, Gaia, a planetary life cell nestled within the holon of the Cosmos. Such a natural hierarchy, sacred order, or unified field of holons cultivates a new type of governance structure, a holocracy. Seeing the world as a series of holons allows us to understand the importance of developing a new governance and cultural system that cradles the emerging holon of humanity into a new holistic organizational pattern. Unlike governance systems of the past that don t take into account the environment around us, holocracy is based on the knowledge of the holon system that makes life on Earth possible. Since the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, holocracy gives us a knowledge that transcends the parts and puts us into a transpersonal cosmic space of Gaia that we need in order to gain the wisdom to manage our resources on a planetary scale. Holocray is a planetary ecological management structure, a government which addresses the whole instead of the parts. Brain Robertson writes that holocracy is about living and working together in the fullest possible way, and evolving the organizations and cultures we exist within to the next step along their natural evolutionary journey. It is about embracing everything we ve learned so far about human organization and culture, and at the same time seeking to fundamentally transcend all aspects of our current organizational and cultural norms. H olocracy creates the mental space needed to govern and organize ourselves and humanity in a way that allows everyone to contribute their part to the whole in positive and creative ways. Holocracy is inherently egalitarian and unitive because the whole vision necessary to guide humanity is created from the power of female/male energies uniting to achieve a greater whole. As the artist within us knows, the fusion of woman and man is caused not only by chemical reactions, but by an invisible, mysterious bond called love.
