JULY 2: THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 Kgs 4:8-11, 14-16a/Rom 6:3-4, 8-11/Mt 10:37-42 To be worthy of Christ, or eternal life with Christ requires that we make Jesus our priority. Following Jesus is a choice that requires a renunciation that we place everything, even every good thing, second to Christ. He is our all in all. In order to follow Jesus, we even have to pick up our cross... we must die to self. In baptism, we have died with Christ that we may also live in newness of life. To be an intentional disciple means that we choose to follow, choose to live our Christian life to the fullest, never counting the cost. Note From the Pope, Pope at Santa Marta: The true significance of I care is helping others In his morning homily at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis recalled that a shepherd must be "passionate and "discern where the dangers are. POPE FRANCIS "The pope then concluded with a short prayer: "for all the shepherds of the Church, for St. Paul who intercedes before the Lord, for all of us pastors to serve the Lord. "The Good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep. The figure of the 'true shepherd,' is someone who does not abandon his sheep, unlike a 'mercenary.' The first quality, therefore is that St Paul is "passionate"the point of telling his people, 'I feel for you all a kind of divine jealousy.'""he knows what seduction in life is. The lying father is a seducer. The Shepherd, is not. The shepherd loves. Instead, the snake, the father of lies, is a seducer. He is a seducer trying to turn away from fidelity, because that divine jealousy of Paul was to bring the people to a single groom, to keep the people loyal to their bridegroom. In the history of salvation, in Scripture many times we turn away from God, disloyalty towards the Lord, idolatry as if it were a maternal infidelity." "The Shepherd s first characteristic, then, is to be passionate, zealous, zealous. The second feature is, someone who knows how to discern: to discern where the dangers are, where the graces are, where the real road is. This means he always accompanies his sheep: in beautiful moments and even in bad moments, even in moments of seduction, with patience he brings them to the fold. The third feature is the ability to denounce. "An apostle cannot be naive: 'Ah, it's all right, let's go ahead, eh? It's all right, Let's party, everyone. everything is possible.'. because there is the fidelity to the only groom, to Jesus Christ, to be defended. And he knows how to condemn it: that concreteness, to say ' no,' like the parents say to the baby when he starts to clap and goes to the electric socket to put his fingers in : 'No, no! It's dangerous!'. But, I think so many times of that 'tuca nen' (do not touch anything) that my parents and grandparents told me at those moments where there was a danger." "I care. But what does it mean? They explained to me that he wanted to say 'I care'. He taught that things were to be taken seriously, against the fashion motto at that time that was 'I do not care,' but said in another language, which I dare not say here. And so he taught the kids to move on. Take care: take care of your life, and this no! "For all the shepherds of the Church, for Saint Paul who intercede before the Lord, for all of us pastors in order to serve the Lord." OUR TITHING PARISH TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Note From the Pastor, This Year $ 9,091.00 Last Year $ 8,285.00 Youth $ 29.00 Pennies from Heaven (June) $ 281.25 Food Pantry Donations (June) 78 Items Critical Needs Donations (June) 110 items Thank you for your continued generosity! This Summer I will be traveling to France from June 27th until July 14th on vacation. I will also be going to Lake Konstance in Germany from July 25th until July31 to preside at a wedding there for two former parishioners. Several years ago I made a promise to myself that I would only do weddings here at Holy Family. No more going other places. But when asked to go to Germany, I had to reconsider that promise. Fr. Bonaventure M. Wierzejewski, who is a Franciscan priest from Cracow, Poland will be coming to stay with us here at Holy Family from July 1st until August 8th. He speaks English well, as he was educated in England at one of their Universities. I believe he is in his mid thirties which ought to be a delightful change from having to deal with someone in his mid sixties, don t you think? For those of you who think I am away for the whole month of July if you read the first paragraph carefully you might notice that I return from France on Friday July 14 and I do not leave for Germany until Tuesday July 25th. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS Zechariah 9: 9-10 Psalm 145: 1-2, 8-11, 13-14 Romans 8: 9, 11-13 Matthew 11: 25-30 Fr. Steve Murray The 2017-19 Formation for Ministry Program begins in September. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP We often tell our children to clean up after themselves, but when it comes to the environment, it seems we are happy for them to clean up the mess we have created. The evidence is clear: we need action and we need it now. An average American generates 3.5 lb. of garbage a day. Suggestions to reduce that trash when grocery shopping: consider the packaging and how much trash it will create, i.e. individually wrapped items, nonrecyclable containers, aerosol cans. At the checkout use a reusable bag or ask for paper that is biodegradable.
