FROM FR. JOE There is so much violent and anger in our society. And it is growing. A week doesn't go by without learning about another shooting or knifing or public harassment incident. Or maybe it is as simple as angry letters and emails, or a cold stare. Here at my parishes I can count on an angry letter or email at least once a month. Lately it has been about not "remembering to pray" for the right cause or not preaching it in the right way or at the right time. I agree. There is plenty to tempt a man or woman to rage. But as our Lord said: You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, "You shall not kill, and whoever kills will be liable to judgement. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, 'Raqa,' will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever say, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna." (Mt 5:21ff) It's time for us to truly hear the Lord's Sermon on the Mount. It's time to go back to Christian basics. Join me in praying for a change in tone in our country, a new chivalry in public discourse. Let's each do our part. To that end, I ask everyone to get their Bibles out with their families and slowly read and pray through the Sermon on the Mount. (Mt 5-7) It is a big part of what inspired me to become a priest. Then, let's share those chapters and verses with our friends and acquaintances and those that may listen. Most importantly, let's rededicate ourselves to living this sermon. For as he said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven." (Mt 7:21ff") Our culture needs a good dose of Christianity. By the Grace of God, we will do our part. Let's take the Lord's sermon, this "Heart of the Gospel" as our guide. In Christ, ~Fr. Joe
