THE THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVERMBER 4, 2018 Dear friends in Christ, May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! We are now in the month of November. The weather has been getting cold, and the daylight is getting shorter each day. Soon we know the winter will be here. The gospel message for this weekend directs our attention to the most important commandment in our faith that is the commandment of love. Jesus says to us and the scribe that there is no other commandment greater than to love God above all things and to love our neighbors as ourselves. As children of God, we are required to love one another as Jesus did. God is love, and we know that everything he does comes from his loving heart. It is His love that he has created us and sent us Jesus his Son to save and redeem us. Since God is the one who loves us first, it is right and just that we should respond to God s kindness and mercy by loving him. Our love only grow and strengthen when we decide to put our faith and hope in God and his promises. The more we know God the more we love him, and the more we love God the greater we believe and hope in his promises. May our prayers for this coming week is that our love for God is always increasing each day, and let nothing stand in the way or keep us from loving God and others. I will be away from Wednesday to Friday to attend the Diocesan Priestly Theological Workshop. The annual diocesan gathering is the continuing education and priestly formation for priests. Although we graduated from seminary, the priestly formation is an ongoing process for all priests. Please pray for our priests. As we commemorate the faithful departed on November 2, we continue to offer mass intentions and pray for all souls in purgatory and our loved ones who have gone before us. Throughout the month of November. Have a blessed week! Peace & Blessings Fr. Quy Vo THE THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B Today s Scripture readings can be found in the Hymnal # 1183 Our prayer s response is: Merciful Lord, hear us WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: November 9 is the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. What is the significance of this feast? Answer: Every diocese has a mother church, the bishop's cathedral where the diocesan church gathers and celebrates. The cathedral is the seat of the bishop's authority over the diocese. That authority is intended to be one of service to God's people, shepherding and guiding them in a truly pastoral mode. The pope is first and foremost the Bishop of Rome, as well as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. St. John Lateran is his cathedral, and its prominence derives from that reality. St. John Lateran cathedral traces its origins to Emperor Constantine who converted a portion of the Laterani family palace into a church, and gave it to Pope Sylvester (314-335) as the papal church and residence; St. John refers to the two saints in whose honor the church is dedicated, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. It became known as the cathedral of the pope, and its facade's inscription refers to it as "the Mother and Head of all Churches, in the City and of the World." The universal celebration of this feast stresses the unity among Roman Catholics, as they unite themselves with the chair of Peter. What are you teaching your children and grandchildren about God? Second Reading The author of Hebrews continues to emphasize Jesus as the perfect and eternal holy, heavenly high priest who intercedes to God for us sinners. For what sins in your life do you need Jesus' intercession? Gospel Reading We hear today a positive encounter between Jesus and a scribe. WORDS TO INSPIRE THE FAITHFUL Love of God and love of neighbor are intimately bound together. You cannot have one without the other. Who are my neighbor and how do I love them? It is easy to confess with our lips that we love our neighbor. But how does this get translated into action? Our neighbors are not only those who live around us or are most familiar to us. Everyone is our neighbor: those who are foreign to us, those who have come here illegally, those who have hurt us, those we envy, those we take for granted, and those who are poor. Embracing humanity in all of its forms is not always an easy task, and doing so can quickly take us out of our comfort zones. Working for justice, as God desires, often means adjusting how much I can have and sacrificing our wants and desires. The very image of God is on the faces of our neighbors, and our face can be found there as well. How much do we really love them? RED MASS Bishop Scharfenberger will be celebrating the Red Mass at 9:00 a.m. on Friday November 16 at Historic St. Mary s church (15 Lodge St. Albany). The Red Mass is celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for judges, attorneys, law school professors, students, and government officials. The Mass asks the Holy Spirit s guidance for all who seek justice and reflects on the God-given responsibility of the legal profession.
