Pastor s Letter ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER IN YOUR FAITH? This is the final of a weekly series of questions intended to help you in your self-assessment of your level of knowledge of basic Catholic Christianity. Following are the answers to last week s Series L questions: 1. Why can only Catholics receive the Holy Eucharist in Communion? The word communion means just that: those who share in the Holy Eucharist must also share a communion of faith, of life, and of worship, of which their communion in the Body and Blood of Christ becomes both the authentic sign and the deeper bond among us. (CCC, 1385, 1396, 1400) 2. Why do Catholics call the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God? That title was approved at the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. both because it is sound Christian theology in her regard, and in order to safeguard the revealed truth of the true nature of Jesus, her Son, as truly God and equally truly man. (CCC, 466, 495, 2677) 3. Why have Catholics traditionally given their children saints names? While not necessary, the purpose is to give the child both a role model for their Christian life, and an intercessor in prayer with God throughout their earthly life in order to help them to attain eternal life with them in heaven. (CCC, 956-957, 1475) 4. Why do only Cardinals elect the Pope? The Catholics of the city of Rome used to elect their own bishop, but as the centuries rolled on and issues in the Church and in the world demanded a broader knowledge of the wider situation, bishops of dioceses near Rome were associated in his election, and were given the title of cardinal because of their cardinal, or hinging importance. (Since this is an historical development and a matter of simple disciplinary law, there are no CCC references.) 5. Why was Mass celebrated for centuries in Latin if nobody understood it? Mass was originally celebrated in Greek, the language that was common to the entire Mediterranean basin, like English is for commerce and culture in today s world. Later on, when Greek was no longer used by most people, their own language, Latin, replaced it, and continued even after the modern languages developed, as an expression of continuity with the faith of the early centuries. (Since this is an historical development and a matter of simple disciplinary law, there are no CCC references.) 6. Should Catholics use meditation in prayer? Meditation is a very high form of prayer when thoughts are primarily used in place of words, and deeper consideration on things divine take over from simple petition. What should be avoided are Oriental forms of meditation, which usually focus on oneself instead of on God. (CCC, 2705-2708) SCRIPURE REFLECTIONS FOR NEXT SUNDAY, 25 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 All evil in any form is opposed to God s wisdom. This allegory refers to that opposition becoming rejection and eventually open hostility to God and all who belong to him. James 3: 16-4:3 The author here draws a sharp contrast between those who live by the tenets of this passing world and those who live by the eternal wisdom of God. Mark 9: 30-37 Self-seeking and self-aggrandizement are diametrically opposed to the Gospel message and way of humility and service of God and our equals. 02 Church of the Holy Childhood
