Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. First Church is a worship education experience for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade. During First Church, children participate in and lead a simplified worship service that follows the same order as our service in the sanctuary. The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Confession The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke All: God of miracles and abundance, we confess that we can be short-sighted and tight-fisted. We underestimate your capacity for giving, and in turn, we under estimate our own capacity for giving. We are hesitant when we could be generous, and we assume we have to be self-sufficient when we could ask you for guidance. Help us to trust your promises of provision and to share the good news of your abundance. One: In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 441) nettleton Hear the good news of salvation: Jesus died to show God s love. Such great kindness! Such great mercy! Come to us from heaven above. Jesus Christ, how much I love you! Jesus Christ, you save from sin! How I love you! Look upon me. Love me still and cleanse within. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Scripture Ephesians 3:14-21 pew Bible pg. 193 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Time with Children Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade may leave for First Church. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. Younger children may go to the nursery. Scripture John 6:1-14 pew Bible pg. 97 Communion Meditation Tables of Welcome The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 301 Let Us Build a House two oaks first stanza only Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: all are welcome; all are welcome; all are welcome in this place. Response *Affirmation of Faith The Reverend Katherine Kerr Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Offertory Anthem Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah arr. John Ferguson Guide me, O though great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty. Hold me with thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side. Songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. Invitation to the Table The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper The Great Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. One: Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name. Sanctus No. 552 land of rest Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. The Words of Institution Communion Music During Communion Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether Harold Friedell Draw us in the Spirit s tether; for when humbly, in thy name, two or three are met together, thou art in the midst of them. Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment s hem. As brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make us sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we would true disciples be. Alleluia! We will serve thee faithfully. Prayer After Communion Sending Forth *Hymn No. 634 To God Be the Glory to god be the glory *Charge and Benediction *Benediction Response Amen danish Postlude Now Thank We All Our God Sigfrid Karg-Elert The sanctuary flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of John Wilson Moore by his family. If there is any good news that is truly good news for everybody, and not just for a few somebodies, it is this: God is greater and more generous than the best of those who profess to know and serve him. - Peter Gomes The bread we break and pass in communion is gluten-free. A time of personal prayer is offered following both services. If you would like to pray with a pastor or a member of our prayer team, please meet them in the sanctuary overflow area after the 9 a.m. service or in the chapel following the 11 a.m. service. * Please stand if you are able.

*Hymn No. 509 1 All who hunger, gather gladly; holy manna is our bread. Come from wilderness and wandering. Here, in truth, we will be fed. You that yearn for days of fullness, all around us is our food. All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly 2 All who hunger, never strangers, seeker, be a welcome guest. Come from restlessness and roaming. Here, in joy, we keep the feast. We that once were lost and scattered in communion s love have stood. 3 All who hunger, sing together; Jesus Christ is living bread. Come from loneliness and longing. Here, in peace, we have been led. Blest are those who from this table live their days in gratitude. *Hymn No. 634 To God Be the Glory 1 To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he has done! 2 Great things he has taught us; great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. (Refrain)
