For more information, please contact the Parish Of ice at (920)468-5718 Thick Heads Jean Vanier was an unknown person to me until I learned of his connection to Henri Nouwen. Who was Henri Nouwen, you might ask? In my opinion, Nouwen was the greatest spiritual writer of the last century. He was proli ic, writing 39 books and many articles. Jean Vanier of L Arche was his close friend and had a strong in luence on Nouwen. Another question pops up now. What is L Arche? It is an international network of communities for people with intellectual disabilities founded by Vanier. Knowing that helps to understand some of his writing. With that small background, here is the quote I want to share with you from Vanier. Jesus is offering to us a personal, intimate relationship with himself that will lead us into the very life of God and nourish this life. * These words are Vanier s kernel of thought on the writing in John s chapter 6 that we ve been reading for the last month and heard again this weekend. Good relationships are the truest source of human happiness. Having authentic intimate relationships bring the greatest ful illment to any human being. This is the offering Jesus holds out to us as he invites us to eat the bread (his very self) and drink the cup (his source of life). Can we even begin to realize the richness, the complete satisfaction, the ful illment of all we yearn for? Can we realize it is offered to us at every Eucharist? Can we take the ONE MOMENT that Father V talked about last week and think what Jesus is offering us as we walk forward to receive communion? Perhaps hearing Jesus message ive weeks in a row might help it to penetrate into our thick heads. *Jean Vanier, Drawn into the Mystery of Jesus through the Gospel of John Pat DeGroot, spiritual director, annulment advocate.
