SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY * indicates that the congregation rise in body or in spirit GATHERING PRELUDE (The gathering song, Part of the Family, can be found on the inside cover of the hymnal.) WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS * CALL TO WORSHIP ONE: God-with-us, Immanuel, ALL: comes to give us our own Holy Family, here with the body of Christ this day. ONE: Rejoice and be glad! ALL: Amen! * HYMN #532 Isaiah The Prophet Has Written Of Old 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God's new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall burst forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth, the brier and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, that wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy.
* CALL TO CONFESSION * PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Shepherd of Israel, God of hosts, we have turned away from you, neglecting the welfare of your creation, ignoring the plight of your people, trampling on the creatures and the plants you have made, taking from Earth what we cannot give back. We have not helped our neighbors in need, kept peace within our families, or tended the vine you have planted in our own lives. Forgive us and lead us to a more gracious life. In your compassion, turn us to your way. Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine upon us, and we shall be saved. Amen. [silent prayer and personal confession] * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS AND PEACE ONE: ALL: ONE: ALL: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven Thanks be to God The Peace of Christ be with you And also with you! * GLORIA Gloria in excelsis Deo Gloria in excelsis Deo LIGHTING THE LOVE CANDLE ONE: We wait for the Lord, saying: ALL: come, Lord Jesus, come. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 7:10-16 GOSPEL READING Matthew 1:18-25 SERMON * HYMN #180 O Little Town of Bethlehem 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 3 How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in. 2 For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love, O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. * APOSTLES CREED (unison) I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Refrain: ONE: O God, who is with us, ALL: hear our prayer.
THE LORD S PRAYER (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. RESPONSE Hear our prayer, O Lord (x3) And grant us Thy peace. Amen. THANKSGIVING OFFERTORY There s A Song In The Air CHOIR * DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow Praise God all Creatures Here Below Praise God above all Heavenly Hosts Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost. Amen * PRAYER OF DEDICATION SENDING * HYMN #189 Angels From The Realms Of Glory 1 Angels, from the realms of glory, 3 Sages, leave your contemplations, wing your flight o'er all the earth; brighter visions beam afar; you who sang creation's story, seek the great Desire of nations, now proclaim Messiah's birth: you have seen the natal star: Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King. 2 Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light: 4 Saints before the altar bending, watching long in hope and fear, suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple shall appear: * CHARGE & BENEDICTION To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally, Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me * POSTLUDE
