CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH LOST. FOUND. FORMED. FOR SERVICE. TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 1 October 21, 2018 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) For the word of God is living and active,..., discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 I can remember a teacher I once had whom we believed had either eyes in the back of her head or ESP. She somehow knew when we would pass notes behind her back. Of course, we didn t count on her having such sharp hearing, nor her vast experience with kids our age. God is, of course, greater than that teacher. He can see into the depths of our hearts and can discern our every thought and intention. His word is alive and active in our lives. Not only does His word show us our sinful nature, it reveals God s salvation plan to us. Thank God, His word has, is, and always will be doing the work He sent it to accomplish. CALL TO WORSHIP and PASSING OF THE PEACE (Please stand) RINGING OF THE BELLS OPENING HYMN #906 O Day of Rest and Gladness

+ DIVINE SERVICE SETTING TWO + (Hymnal, p. 167) INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination) People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we struggle with money and fail to be good stewards of time, talent, and treasure. We confess that there is evil in our hearts and minds, and that we have been disobedient, doing what we should not, and not doing what we should. Nothing is hidden from Your sight. We are naked and exposed, our sins are before you, even our secret sins in the light of Your presence. We justly deserve Your real and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may confidently draw near to Your throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. 2

(please remain standing) HYMN OF PRAISE This is the Feast 3

4 PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. ALL : O God, Your divine wisdom sets in order all things in heaven and on earth. Put away from us all things hurtful and give us those things that are beneficial for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) OLD TESTAMENT READING Ecclesiastes 5:10 20 (We rejoice and rest in the gifts of God.) Reader: The Old Testament reading is from Ecclesiastes, chapter five. (After the reading ) Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE READING Hebrews 4:1 13 (There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.) Reader: The Epistle reading is from Hebrews, chapter four. (After the reading ) Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! 5 (Please stand for the Alleluia Verse and the reading of the Gospel Lesson) ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:23 31 (How difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God!) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. (The Gospel is read.) Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

APOSTLE'S CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. 6 (Please be seated) We invite the children forward as we sing: LSB 740, v. 1 I am Jesus little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am; For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need and well provides me, Loves me ev ry day the same, Even calls me by my name. Almighty and gracious God, You want all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. that hope of perfection that will be ours as we stand before Your unveiled glory. Lord, in Your mercy. People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: O Lord, You are the great physician of body and soul. Show mercy to Your servants, (especially ). Spare their lives and restore their strength. Even as You gave Your Son to bear our sicknesses, deal compassionately with Your servants and bless them with Your healing power. We commit them to Your gracious mercy and protection. Lord, in Your mercy. People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: We pray for those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Heavenly Father, into whose keeping we entrust our loved ones, help us to look to You in our time of sorrow, remembering the cloud of faithful witnesses with which we are surrounded. Grant that we may one day share in the joys of those who now rest in Your presence. Lord, in Your mercy. People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: Lord God of hosts, stretch forth Your almighty arm to strengthen and protect those who serve in the armed forces of our country, (especially ). Grant that in all things they may serve with integrity and with honor. Lord, in Your mercy. People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: Eternal Lord, ruler of all, graciously regard those who have been set in positions of authority among us that, guided by Your Spirit, they may be high in purpose, wise in counsel, firm in good resolution, and unwavering in duty, 8

that under them we may be governed quietly and peaceably. Lord, in Your mercy. People: Hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, including those we now name in our hearts. We trust in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. People: Amen. + SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. 9 Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PROPER PREFACE Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who with Your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God, we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty coequal. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the

company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 10 SANCTUS THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, ( ) given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, ( ) shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: Amen. AGNUS DEI
