Indus River Valley Civilization AKA: Harappa Civilization

Geography of Indus River Valley: 1. Located along the Indus River 2. Surrounded by the Himalayas, Hindu Kush Mountains and Thar Desert 3. Affected by the monsoons during the summer months giving them heavy rainfall a. The rains flooded the rivers which would lay down silt on the land b. Depended on that flooding and rainfall to grow crops c. Could also be disastrous, too much rain would destroy crops, homes and lives.

Why did the Indus River Valley Civilization develop along a river? Write, Pair, Share

Harappa Civilization 2500 BC 1. Two major cities: a. Harappa (named after a nearby modern city) b. Mohenjo Daro (means mound of the dead) c. Both were discovered in the 1920s 2. Indus cities were well planned and laid out a. Streets set up in a grid pattern: ran north-south and east-west b. Had community wells where people would get their water c. Had a public drainage system 3. Citadel: walled and elevated center of the city where granaries, warehouses, and meeting halls were located. a. Everything else such as homes, workshops, and shrines were located outside of the citadel.

Harappa Civilization: Writing System 1. They developed a writing system of pictograms similar to both Sumerian Cuneiform and Egyptian Hieroglyphs. 2. We have yet to figure out how to read it

Harappa Civilization 1. Economy: a. Agriculture i. Mostly farmed and herded livestock ii. In the cities people made pottery, metalwork and jewelry b. Trade i. Traded goods as far as Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Mesopotamia 2. Society: a. One central government between the cities i. Cities were all planned the same ii. Had a standard set of weights and measures iii. Shared tool designs

The Vedic Period 1. Harappan Civilization was invaded by the Aryans around 1500 BC a. It is unclear whether the Aryans were outsiders or originated in Northern India 2. Wiped out most of the Harappan Civilization 3. Society was based around the sacred writings of the Vedas 4. The Aryans introduced a new structure to society called the Caste System

The Caste System 1. The introduction of the Vedas divided Society into 4 Varnas (Castes/Classes) a. Brahmins: i. Highest ranking varna, smallest numerically ii. Made up of priests and teachers b. Kshatriyas: i. Warriors and rulers c. Vaisyas: i. Common people of Vedic society ii. Traders, farmers, herders, and so on d. Sudras: i. Servants who waited upon members of the other varnas

There is a group of people who don t belong to any caste and they are called the Untouchables a. They performed any task that the varna classes wouldn t such as handling dead bodies of people and animals
