Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. Kneel/Stand P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. 4

Stand Service of the Word Introit Ps. 118:25 28; antiphon: Zech. 9:9b, alt. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. The LORD is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Salutation and Collect of the Day P Let us pray. Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit Old Testament Reading Isaiah 2:1 5 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 8

He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Gradual Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. Zech. 9:9; Ps. 118:26, alt. Epistle Romans 13:11 14 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 9

Stand Alleluia LSB 156 Holy Gospel Matthew 21:1 11 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter. Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord needs them, and he will send them at once. This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, Who is this? And the crowds said, This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. 10

Sit Children's Message Mrs. Jane Borchin Hymn of the Day: 332 Savior of the Nations, Come (vv. 5-8) (Continued from Hymn of Invocation) 5 God the Father was His source, Back to God He ran His course. Into hell His road went down, Back then to His throne and crown. 6 For You are the Father s Son Who in flesh the vict ry won. By Your mighty pow r make whole All our ills of flesh and soul. 7 From the manger newborn light Shines in glory through the night. Darkness there no more resides; In this light faith now abides. 8 Glory to the Father sing, Glory to the Son, our king, Glory to the Spirit be Now and through eternity. Sermon Rev. John Zimmerman 11

Stand Apostles' Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Sit Offering And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 12

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. ALTAR FLOWERS The flowers on the altar are given to the glory of God in honor of Robert and Barbara DeFazio s 51 st Wedding Anniversary on November 25. Congratulations to you both, and may God continue to bless you, your home and your family. STEWARDSHIP REPORT: Attendance Last Week: Saturday: 12; Sunday: 60; Total: 72 Church/Local Ministry: $1,825.15; Missions: $167.00; Helping Hands: $25.00; W orld Hunger: $15.00; Total: $2,032.15 SUNDAY SCHOOL Today in Sunday School we studied the account David Becomes King. Just as David reigned over Israel, so the God-man, Jesus, our David, reigns over the kingdom of grace, of which we are citizens. Consider asking, How was King David different from King Saul? How does Jesus serve as our King? We also explored the story God Forgives David. Just as God accepted and forgave King David and other great saints who committed grave sins, so He accepts and forgives us, all for the sake of Christ. Parents could ask, Who reminds you of your sins? Who tells you about forgiveness? ADVENT DINNER This year s Advent dinner will be held after church next Sunday, December 4. There are signup sheets available in the hall and narthex to let us know how many to set up for and to indicate what dishes you are bringing. PRESCHOOL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The Preschool will bless us with their musical talents during the worship service on Sunday, December 11. This much-anticipated annual event is a true joy and highlight of the Advent season. ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE Our annual Food Drive will support the food pantry out of Our Father s House, 1820 Church Ave., Scranton. You may drop off non-perishable items in the orange baskets provided from now until mid-december. Monetary donations will be welcome, as well, to purchase meats and other needed items. 16

Wherever Jesus comes humbly (Matthew 21:5) in Word and Church, salvation arrives (Romans 13:11). He dresses sinners instead in armor of light that they may cast off works of darkness (Romans 13:12). Coming Savior, beat our swords into plowshares. Amen. A LIFE QUOTE [A]fter our nation has celebrated Thanksgiving, I encourage God s people to continue with a thankful spirit. We, who have heard the angels tell of God s Good News of great joy, ought to be rejoicing. We, who have seen the fires of hell and know we don t have to go there, should continuously praise God who sent His Son to give His life so we might have eternal life. Indeed, for us, contentment and thanksgiving ought to be our regular fare. Rev. Ken Klaus, Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life www.lutheransforlife.org 17

SERMON NOTES What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through the Word and the message today? Scripture, hymns, thoughts to remember from today s service: _ Matthew 21:3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once." Just a colt and her foal. How significant could they be? Could they really be used by the Lord for some great, heavenly purpose? This is one facet of stewardship we often forget: the blessing it is to us to be of service in the Lord's kingdom. What honor the Lord bestows upon us by using our gifts for His goals! https://blogs.lcms.org/2016/stewardship-bulletin-sentences-and-newsletter-articlesnovember-2016 19
