Morning Worship Service September 28, 2014-9:00 AM Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Please adjust all electronic communication devices so as not to disrupt the service. If you need to leave the Sanctuary, please use the exits in the narthex. Welcome & Announcements Prelude Rejoice, the Lord is King arr. Dan Forrest Let us quiet our hearts before the Lord. Call to Worship Psalm 96:1-4 Leader: Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. People: Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. All: For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. ** Glorifying God in Song Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Hymn # 76

** The Invocation ** The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. **The Gloria Patri Hymn # 734 The First Scripture Lesson 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-- the first day. Genesis 1:1-5 Leader: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Confession of Our Sins (If you are able, we invite you to kneel so that our outward posture reflects our inward attitude) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. - Episcopal, Book of Common Prayer Assurance of Pardon 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:5-6 Musical Offering

The Second Scripture Lesson 1 Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 Leader: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Pastoral Prayer & The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Anthem Ye Love Me Thomas Tallis If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, And he shall give you another comforter. That he may bide with you forever, E'en the spirit of truth, e'en the spirit of truth, e'en the spirit of truth. That he may bide with you forever, E'en the spirit of truth, e'en the spirit of truth, e'en the spirit of truth, The Third Scripture Lesson 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. John 8:12-20 Leader: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

** Glorifying God in Song Come, We That Love the Lord Hymn # 700 ** Offertory Statement & Prayer of Dedication 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-- all she had to live on." ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES Walden Class Room 108 Teacher: Matthew McKenzie The Walden Class, which is currently studying the book of Ephesians, offers a combination of Bible study and social interaction, as participants share their lives with one another through prayer requests, praise reports, brief devotionals, and a thirtyminute Bible lesson each Sunday. The class offers a greater degree of flexibility for those desiring to engage in a study of a particular book of the Bible, which may exceed the quarterly limitations of other classes, e.g. a four or five month study through The Gospel of Matthew or the book of Revelation, etc. This relaxing pace of the Walden Class allows for a comprehensive study of Sacred Scripture in the context of thoughtful dialog, question and answer, and practical application of God's Word. Christ and Salvation (WCF chapter 8-15) Room 102 Teacher: Ben Lambers This is the second of four classes as we study the Westminster Confession of Faith. They do not have to be taken in order. This document is the best summary of what Scripture teaches. Therefore, this class is a great way to get a concise and precise summary of Sacred Scripture, especially pertaining to the person and work of Jesus Christ and how he accomplished salvation for His people. This class covers chapters 8-15, and attendees will be challenged to complete weekly homework. Let us all remember, the goal of teaching theology is maturity, not simply knowledge. Maturity always leads to application of this knowledge to life (from the head to the heart to the hands). Come join us! The Seven Deadly Sins Church Office Teacher: Joe DeNitto Can you name the seven deadly sins? Where did they originate? Are they right out of the Bible, or the 10 commandments? What are the seven lively or cardinal virtues? How can we relate these old ideas to our modern lives and pursue a better examination of conscience? Even if you knew these sins and virtues, how could they help you in your walk with Christ? The Christian faith has been teaching believers to avoid these seven sins, and practice these seven virtues for a long time. Even after the Protestant Reformation, teachings of one form or another about them continued. If you would like to explore this subject further, come join Elder Joe DeNitto for this timeless study.
