Family Faith Ac vi es Jan. 12th Bap sm of the Lord This Sunday marks a transi on from the Christmas season to Ordinary Time. In a way, today's feast is the high point of the Christmas season. Before Jesus' birth, angels announced to Mary and to Joseph who Jesus would be. At his birth, the shepherds and the Magi recognize Jesus as the Messiah. At his bap sm, Jesus accepts that he is God's son and inaugurates that mission. Ask each family member what they remember about their own bap sm. Bring out pictures or share stories to remember with. Read Ma hew 3:13-17 & discuss: How is Jesus bap zed? Why does John bap ze Jesus? What happens when Jesus is bap zed? How was Jesus bap sm like our bap sm? What does Bap sm help us to do? Ac vity: Holy Water! Place holy water in a special dish near the entrance of your home. Encourage family members to bless themselves with the Sign of the Cross each me they enter or leave the house. Prac ce making the Sign of the Cross as a reminder of our Bap sm and iden ty as God s adopted children. Ac vity: Trinity Punch! Discuss how this reading includes God the Father speaking, Jesus being bap zed, the Holy Spirit descending like a dove. Now take pineapple juice - represents God as in "Let there be light", mix into it grape juice which represents Jesus - blood of Christ, now add a clear carbonated drink like sparkling water - the Holy Spirit, invisible but effervescent. Talk about how individually each is different but when mixed together you cannot dis nguish them. They work together! Concluding prayer: Let us pray. Dear God, thank you for sharing your life with us at Bap sm. Help us to always live as your children. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Five Ways to Make Prayer a Priority (Loyola Press) 1. When you rise from bed, get down on your knees. Put your slippers or shoes far under your bed so that you need to get on your knees to reach. While there say a quick prayer offering the day to God. 2. Communicate in the car. As you buckle your seat belts say a quick prayer that you will be aware of God s presence in the day. 3. Place a prayer jar in the kitchen. Keep a jar handy where family members can place a special inten on that your family can pray for. Before going to bed, each person can a pull a slip out and pray for that inten on. 4. Fold your hands before you unfold your napkin. Before each meal take a moment to thank the One who provides you with all you need and blesses those around you. 5. Pray when people or events upset you. Make a habit of saying a quick prayer whenever someone or something bothers you. A quick help me God is sufficient. You ll never run out of opportuni es.
