Personal Practices of Following Jesus Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 9:30 am Sanctuary 2021 W. State Road 426 Oviedo, FL 32765 sllcs.org 407.365.3408 9:30 am

In Preparation for the Lord s Supper The Bible tells us (1 Corinthians 11:23-29) that it is vitally important that we understand and believe that the Lord s Supper is a participation in the very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. To receive the blessings of this Sacrament to our benefit it is necessary that we examine our hearts and our lives. Please read and prayerfully consider the following: I believe that I am sinful by nature and in need of forgiveness. I confess that I have sinned in my thoughts, words, and deeds. I believe I am forgiven only through faith in Jesus Christ. I confess that in, with, and under the bread and wine I receive the very Body and Blood of Jesus. I promise by the power of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life and strive to live a God-pleasing life. As members of Jesus family, we have a responsibility to teach and encourage one another so that we receive the blessing intended for us in this Sacrament. Out of sincere love, we respectfully ask that those who have not been instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church please speak with a pastor before attending the Lord s Supper. St. Luke s offers Explorations an adult information class for those high school age and above desiring to be confirmed. Children are confirmed at the end of their eighth grade year after completing instruction. We are happy to meet with you and discuss any special circumstances or needs you may have. Communion Procedure Note: Anyone who cannot come to the communion rail may receive the Lord s Supper in the pew. Simply let a pastor or usher know your request and sit in one of the front rows. Those who are not communing are invited to come forward for a blessing (please cross your arms across your chest to indicate your desire for a blessing). 2 9:30 am

As We Gather: Fifth Sunday in Lent March 18, 2018 Connecting to Christ - Starting Over Series - Part 3 New Actions All relationships are rooted in good communication. And so it is in our relationship with God, our Father. Prayer is a powerful gift given to the followers of Jesus. In prayer we talk to God. Jesus lays out a remarkable pattern for us in the prayer that has come to be known as the Lord s Prayer. Ironically it can become the very thing Jesus warned us against - a mindless repetition of words. Today we lay claim to this precious gift and put it into practice in our lives as followers of Jesus. Invocation: God Grants Us The Gift Of Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; 18:20) Confession: P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. Absolution 9:30 am 5

Hymn of Meditation: Jesus, I Will Ponder Now LSB 440:1, 6 6 Graciously my faith renew; Help me bear my crosses, Learning humbleness from You, Peace mid pain and losses. May I give You love for love! Hear me, O my Savior, That I may in heav n above Sing Your praise forever. Prayer of the Day: P: Almighty God, it was Your will that Your Son drink the cup of suffering and death on our behalf. Grant us repentance and faith that we might receive the benefits of Christ s suffering for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 6 9:30 am

God Speaks To Us From His Word First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 (ESV) 31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel: Matthew 6:5-15 (ESV) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord! 5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on continued 9:30 am 7

earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ! Hymn of the Day: Speak O Lord 1. Speak O Lord as we come to You To receive the food of Your holy word Take Your truth plant it deep in us Shape and fashion us in Your likeness That the light of Christ might be seen today In our acts of love and our deeds of faith Speak O Lord and fulfill in us All Your purposes for Your glory 2. Teach us Lord full obedience Holy reverence true humility Test our thoughts and our attitudes In the radiance of Your purity Cause our faith to rise Cause our eyes to see Your majestic love and authority Words of power that can never fail Let their truth prevail over unbelief 8 9:30 am

3. Speak O Lord and renew our minds Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us Truths unchanged from the dawn of time That will echo down through eternity And by grace we'll stand on Your promises And by faith we'll walk as You walk with us Speak O Lord till Your church is built And the earth is filled with Your glory Sermon Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. God Gives Us A Foretaste Of The Feast To Come We are celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion which we believe to be a great gift from our loving God. Please read In Preparation for the Lord s Supper on page 2. Preface: P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Holy Lord, Almighty Father, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose, there life also might rise again, and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy): (Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9) 10 9:30 am

Lord s Prayer: (Matthew 6:9-13) Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Words of Institution Peace of the Lord: P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.
