Parishioners, 17 months ago, the Bishop appointed me Pastor of St. Mary. In the beginning, I asked that all of you be patient as I settle in and specifically and sort through the files of the Long Term Planning recommendations for our Parish Campus. Unfortunately it took longer than I expected, as several once in a life time events were happening at the same time affecting our Parish, the consolidation of the three schools and the strategic planning across the Diocese. During this time I have toured the Campus, listened to parishioners, reviewed the documents, spoke with the architects and encouraged all committees to bring as much information about our options for making St. Mary strong, safe and welcoming to our parishioners and guests. It is clear we must do something. Over the past 40 years there has been talk to build or not build, since the days of Msgr. Shetler. Fr. Ackerman began the Long Term Committee, Fr. Zach and Fr. Ron continued the efforts. I certainly thank all the former pastors and parishioners who continued through the years to look to the future and plan for our Parish. Over the next few months a final decision will be made on what we will accomplish. Several people mentioned we must have plans that are reasonable. During the past 17 months the Long Term Planning met with the architects and requested two additional plans with same design but offering different sizes and price ranges. This gives us options, if we build or restore; it would be our first Capital Campaign we don t want to bite off more than we can handle nor do we want to sell ourselves short. Some have expressed the great love for the church building. If the consensus of the Parish is not to build, we must address that improvements need to be made to ensure that the building will be safe and maintained for the next 50 to 75 years. However that would not address the lack of space that we face in the church and across the campus. If we do not build a new church, other accommodations will need to be made including the office space, since it is not handicap accessible. Preparing for the next stage of improving our Parish Campus I have invited several new members to the Long Term Committee. We will update them on the progress we have made and then tap into their expertise as we continue to communicate to all of you and then hear back from you in a Parish Town Hall Meeting. Father Gary Vacation Bible School begins June 23 at 9:00am. Lots and lots of kids and volunteers will be attending. With lots and lots of people there is a need for lots and lots of donated items. On the bulletin board are things that will be needed. We are asking for your help. Grab an item and drop it off at the parish office anytime, unless it is fruit - that needs to come the Monday morning of VBS. Here are a few of the things needed: Apples - bananas - Crayola Markers - goldfish or whale snack crackers - grapes - ziplock storage bags (quart and gallon) Dubois County Catholic Schools Come to learn. Go forth to serve. Trust in Divine Providence. Did You Know? Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 in Dubois County Catholic schools attend Mass twice a week - over 70 Masses per school year! If this time does not work for you, call the parish office and we will make other arrangements with you. Your stewardship in the form of funeral dishes is greatly appreciated by your parish.
