QURBANI 1432 A.H. (2011)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him Surah Hajj 22:37 The Prophet (saw) was asked, What is Qurbani? and he answered, It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah. Tirmidhi The blessed occasion of Qurbani (Udhiyya) is enjoyed by Muslims worldwide. Muslims celebrate the day of Qurbani of a healthy sheep, goat, buffalo or camel during the Islamic month of Zhul Hijjah, in pursuit of the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) every year. Observance of this tradition is compulsory for Muslims. To bring cheer and joy amongst the destitute and needy in the society during the celebration of Eid-ul- Azha, the second most important festival of Muslims, is one of the main benefits of qurbani, but ultimate basic objective of qurbani is to invoke the spirit of self-sacrifice shown by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and to submit oneself to the will of Allah. Due to the extreme poverty conditions experienced by our brothers and sisters in India, enjoying a meal comprising of meat is considered a luxury. Human Welfare Trust (HWT) each year performs Qurbani on behalf of its supporters/well wishers and distributes meat in the areas where the need is greatest. Altogether 56,952 people, including widows, children, orphans, destitute, aged and disabled people from Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and other north Indian states, benefitted from this project worth INR 17.32 Millions during the last three years. The beneficiaries were selected with an active support of the local humanitarian organisations and community leaders. More than 1,34,500 kilograms of buffalo and goat meat was distributed. The distribution of qurbani meat was made in strict compliance to the Islamic injunctions. A just and equitable distribution of qurbani meat has enhanced the HWT s trust, respect and networking in different stakeholders alongside helping underprivileged households enjoy the happy moments of the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Azha by providing them enough meat for three days. 2 Qurbani 1432 A. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 2006 Sachar Committee report on the status of the Muslim community in India found that Muslims were amongst the poorest of the poor in the country. 31% of Muslims in India live below poverty line. According to a survey conducted by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the University of Maryland of the US, the monthly income of nearly one third of Muslims in India is less than Rs 550. Three out of every 10 Muslims lived below the poverty line and earned less than Rs 550 (12 US $) a month. Even among the poor, urban Muslims were better off compared to those in villages, who survived on just Rs 338 (7.5 US $) a month. The blessed occasion of Qurbani ( Udhiyya) is enjoyed by Muslims worldwide. Due to the extreme poverty conditions experienced by our brothers and sisters in India, enjoying a meal comprising of meat is considered a luxury. For its 1432 (2011) Qurbani Project, the Human Welfare Trsut (HWT) of New Delhi, India is once again hoping to carry out the meat distribution to the Indian people living below poverty line. The project is carried out under strict supervision by our representatives to ensure that the entire process is in accordance with the Shari' ah. The entire project will take place in Northern part of India. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this project is to provide Qurbani meat to the poor and deserving and under privileged who cannot sacrifice animals on their own on Eid ul Azha. to contribute reduce malnutrition amongst the community and particularly the vulnerable: women, children and elderly by providing them with meat at least once in a year. to help donors share the happiness of the arrival of the feast and its blessings with the needy. Distribution is made in such a manner that real deserving people get benefit. In other words, the basic purpose of this project is to make sure that the under privileged and poor people are not left behind in this hour of happiness. They should have this feeling that someone is looking after them, caring for them. Please note that the cut off for receiving your Qurbani will be Wednesday, 2nd November, 2011. METHODOLOGY This project will be implemented on TOWN AND VILLAGE level. First a survey of the people who deserve Qurbani meat will be conducted.
