From Father Simon 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL Jesus is the answer - is a bumper sticker that most of us have seen. But what is the question? In this week s gospel, Jesus poses a question What do you want me to do for you? to Bartimaeus, the blind man who calls out to Jesus. In last week s gospel James and John came to Jesus with a request, Teacher we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you and Jesus asked them a similar question, What do you wish me to do for you? Bartimaeus was a blind beggar, and he was on the side of the road as the world passed him by. Jesus did not pass him by. When he heard Bartimaeus shouting, he stopped. Whenever Jesus heard someone in distress, however busy he was, he stopped, he did not pass by on the other side. Then Jesus called Bartimaeus from the margins into the middle of the crowd and made him the center of attention. It seemed obvious what the blind man needed, but Jesus did not presume to decide without asking, What do you want me to do for you?' Jesus restored his sight but gave the credit for the miracle to the man himself, saying Your faith has saved you. Then Jesus said, Go! Jesus made no demand of him nor did he make Bartimaeus feel that he was now indebted to him. Jesus left Bartimaeus totally free to go his way. Bartimaeus chose to become a follower of Jesus. He was no longer on the side of the road, he was on the road with Jesus making his own unique contribution. From the beginning to the end of this story Jesus shows us how people need to be treated if they are to grow and flourish, become their best selves and make their contribution in life. Think about this: a mother hears her child crying. She stops what she is doing immediately and goes to her. The child may have fallen, or feels badly treated by a sister or brother. The mother holds her and gives her full attention and asks, What is wrong? What happened? What do you want me to do for you? Often this loving attention and practical help enables the child to get over her distress. In a while she is up and going again - and feels in no way indebted for the care she has received. We can judge a community or a country by the way it treats people like Bartimaeus. God is at work in a community when its neediest members are made the center of attention. They are treated with respect, their voices are heard and their needs are met. Their giftedness is recognized and fostered. They are given the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest and put their talents at the service of others. If our question to anyone in need is What can I do for you?, then the Jesus in us is the answer. Blessings!

f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 28, 2018 And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Him on the way. MARK 10:52 Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common and you will see God s active presence in your daily life. It s Our Turn Unless you were here in the late 1950s when our church was under construction (see picture on right) you might think our Basilica was always here and always will be. But we know that it took a lot of hard work and a lot of very generous giving to fund our magnificent church, from people just like us who sat in the same pews we sit in today. The financial challenge faced by those who came before us was to construct our parish buildings. Our challenge today is to maintain and enhance those buildings. As you decide on your level of support for our parish, please consider: October 11 to 17, 2018 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $14,283.97 484 Loose Donation $4,590.00 n/a Elect. Giving $5,686.00 148 Total $24,559.97 YTD Total $431,108.38 Our parish capital campaign construction project is fully underway with the comprehensive renovation and repurposing of our former convent, the Benedict Center. Please keep current on your pledge so that our project can stay on schedule, and consider whether your circumstances might allow you to increase your earlier pledge. Repair and maintenance costs, especially for the Basilica, have risen dramatically in recent years, including the unexpected replacement of the ceiling and the current work on the Bell Tower. We were forced to borrow from our savings to pay for these repairs and will need your increased Sunday collections to replenish our savings. Whatever your decision, please know that we are always grateful for your full participation, including your attendance at Mass, your volunteer work in our many ministries, and your continued financial support. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish website at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 9

If it is not possible for you to come to the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30pm. Please call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month on alternate Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but also for the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not just a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him or her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age may properly receive this sacrament. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 11
