Why was William Tyndale a reformer? Tyndale translated the Bible into English. He attacked corruption in the Catholic Church and defended the Reformation.

Why was John Calvin a reformer? Taught the idea of predestination the idea that God knew who would be saved even before they were born He wanted a purified church. He banned many forms of entertainment like playing cards and dancing. Spread basic Reformation ideas such as the right of common people to make church policy.

Why was King Henry VIII a reformer? King Henry s wife did not bear a son. The pope would not grant King Henry a divorce. So King Henry broke away from the Catholic Church by starting his own church called the Church of England (Anglican Church) King Henry then closed down Catholic monasteries in England and took their land.

Problem The spread of Protestantism in Europe

Solution The Catholic (Counter) Reformation used a variety of methods to fight the spread of Protestantism like

Spanish Inquisition Roman Catholic leaders of Spain decided to force the Muslims, Jews, and Protestants out of Spain. To enforce their decision they ordered the Spanish Inquisition to find and punish any Muslims, Jews, and Protestants left in Spain. They wanted to make sure that everyone belonged to the Catholic Church.

Jesuits The Jesuits were a religious order created to serve the pope and the church. It was founded by Ignatius of Loyola. The Jesuits goal was to teach people about Catholic ideas, which would turn people against Protestant ideas.

Council of Trent The Council of Trent met in 1545 to clarify church teachings that had been criticized by Protestants. The council banned the selling of indulgences! But, the council rejected the ideas of Martin Luther and John Calvin. INDULGENCES

Missionaries Catholic missionaries, like the famous Francis Xavier, traveled throughout the world and set up missions and worked to convert new people to the Catholic Church.
