October 28, 2018 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Reformation Sunday

Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Jared Huffman, pastor of adult discipleship * Call to worship based on Psalm 103 Leader: Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. All: He forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases, he redeems our lives from the pit and crowns us with love and compassion, he satisfies our desires with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle s. Leader: The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. All: Praise the Lord, O my soul! * Hymn of praise All Creatures of Our God and King All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! And all ye men of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part, O sing ye, alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and on him cast your care, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness, O praise him, alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, three in one, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! text by Francis of Assisi, 1225 * Prayer of adoration

Reformation affirmation Leader: Holy God, we praise you for the cry of the Reformation and affirm that you alone are worthy of all glory. Therefore, people of God, what is the chief end of mankind? All: Our chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. This is our all-consuming purpose. Our every activity is to be sanctified to the glory of God alone. (based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, question one) Leader: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. In him we have been chosen, in order that we might be for the praise of his glory. (based on Ephesians 1) All: To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and power forever and ever! For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. (Revelation 5:13 and Romans 11:36) Call to confession based on Isaiah 55 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him. Let him turn to our God, for he will freely pardon. Hymn of confession Come, Ye Sinners Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love and pow r: he is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more; he is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him; this he gives you, this he gives you; tis the Spirit s rising beam; this he gives you, this he gives you; tis the Spirit s rising beam. Come, ye weary, heavy-laden, lost and ruined by the fall; if you tarry till you re better, you will never come at all: not the righteous, not the righteous sinners Jesus came to save; not the righteous, not the righteous sinners Jesus came to save. text by Joseph Hart, 1759

Prayer of confession Leader: Waken our hearts, O Lord, our God; make us ever watchful to serve you and your purposes. All: Trouble us with the smallness of our vision and work. Trouble us with the greatness of your command to make disciples of all nations. Trouble us with your great love for sinners and our own slowness to make you our greatest love. Trouble us with the brevity of our lives, talents, and treasures not invested in eternity. Silent prayers of confession Leader: Comfort us by drawing us to yourself with the cords of your unfailing mercy. Comfort us, O Lord, with the assurance of our salvation and unending glory with you when we suffer and are afflicted. All: Rekindle in us a renewed desire for the coming of your glorious kingdom when all wrongs will be made right, when everything that is broken will be made whole, and when we will trade a cross for a crown. Amen. adapted from the prayers of Martin Luther Assurance of God s pardoning grace John 3:16-17 God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. * Hymn of assurance Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder Let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior s name. He has hushed the law s loud thunder, he has quenched Mount Sinai s flame, he has washed us with his blood (3x), he has brought us nigh to God. Let us love the Lord who bought us, pitied us when enemies, called us by his grace and taught us; gave us ears and gave us eyes, he has washed us with his blood (3x), he presents our souls to God. Let us wonder, grace and justice join and point to mercy s store; when through grace in Christ our trust is, justice smiles and asks no more: he who washed us with his blood (3x), has secured our way to God.

Let us praise and join the chorus of the saints enthroned on high; here they trusted him before us, now their praises fill the sky: Thou hast washed us with thy blood (3x), thou art worthy, Lamb of God! text by John Newton, 1774 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Speak, O Lord Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your Holy Word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness; that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all your purposes for your glory. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility; test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of pow r that can never fail let their truth prevail over unbelief. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we ll stand on your promises, and by faith we ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till your church is built, and the earth is filled with your glory. text and music by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend 2005 Thankyou Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. #152036 * Scripture reading from Mark 13:24-27, 32-37 Tripp Johnston (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Merrile Stroud (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Pastoral prayer The Return of the King Frank Hitchings, senior associate pastor * Hymn of response My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. continued

* Benediction * Doxology * Postlude When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Refrain His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. Refrain When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found; dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain text by Edward Mote, 1834 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Amy Barham vocalist David Henry guitar, vocalist Caroline Jones vocalist Meredith Lee cello Hannah Lutz viola John Reeder piano The rosebuds in the fellowship hall today are for the births of William Harrison Weeks, born to Lauren and Will Weeks on October 15, and Liza Grace Brooks, born to Meredith and Jay Brooks on October 22.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS AFTER A SEARCH PROCESS TO REPLACE JARED HUFFMAN and a recommendation from the pastoral search committee, the Session has called Chad Middlebrooks, associate pastor at Zion Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Tennessee, to join LMPC as pastor of adult discipleship. Chad has accepted the call and, pending approval from Tennessee Valley Presbytery, will join the LMPC pastoral staff sometime between January 1-February 1, 2019. Please join us in thanking the Lord for his provision, and pray for the Middlebrooks family as they begin to transition and prepare to move to Lookout Mountain. TONIGHT, WE WILL JOIN IN A COMBINED WORSHIP SERVICE for the congregations of the Tennessee Valley Presbytery to celebrate the Reformation. The service will be at 6:00 p.m. at New City Fellowship in Chattanooga and Pastor Kevin Smith will be preaching. There will be no regular evening prayer service at LMPC. Please plan to join us. IF YOU WILL BE FACING THE HOLIDAYS AFTER A SEPARATION OR DIVORCE, join us for a special Divorce Care presentation to learn how to deal with emotions and family plans and to discover hope for your future. This is a one-time event on Tuesday, November 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Reception Room at LMPC. Dessert and refreshments will be served. Contact Leon at leonsulser@gmail.com or Rodney at rodney.miller@covenant.edu for more information. LAUNCH SUNDAY FOR THE 2019 BUDGET will be on Sunday, November 11. Please begin praying about how much you might be able to commit to give in 2019. Members will receive more specific information about the 2019 budget in the mail soon. We are praying that, because of a larger than normal increase in next year s budget, we will have 80% of the budget pledged by December 31, 2018. You can submit your giving plans online now at lmpc.org/giving-2019. To find out more about happenings at LMPC, visit lmpc.org/news VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: HEDGEHOG GROVE Volunteers are needed for Hedgehog Grove on Friday, November 9 from 5:15-9:00 p.m. Hedgehog Grove is a ministry that provides an evening of fun and care for children with special needs and their siblings. If you are interested in preparing food dishes or serving as a buddy to a child with special needs or their sibling, please contact Emily Brown at emily@lmpc.org.

Mark 13:24-27, 32-37 24 But in those days, following that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 26 At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 32 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!

Response to the certainty of the Lord s final return (vv. 32-37) Hope: his return is unknown but absolutely certain Expectancy: his return is imminent so we must live awake
