Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2016 It is [Christ] whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. Colossians 1:28b THANK YOU NOTE from the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement. They would like to convey their thankfulness for your prayers, hospitality and generosity for allowing them to make their Mission Appeal to you. The Sisters are confident that, in gratitude, God s love and mercy will bless each of you in your daily life. Be assured of the continued prayers of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement for this and for all your intentions. PATRICK A HOLY MAN FOR MULTIPLE FAITHS. Saint Patrick venerated in Catholicism but also in the Anglican, Lutheran and Eastern Orthodox Church as being equal to the Apostles; that St. Patrick was actually never canonized, but the majority of the faithful view him as a saint anyway, and that he died on March 17th 460. Though St. Patrick lived in the British Isles, he is forever known as Ireland s Patron Saint. The story has it that he taught Irish pagans the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by using the shamrock to illustrate his Christian teaching, and the shamrock evolved into the central symbol for St. Patrick Day and all things emerald green or mythical, including nature, spirits, fairies and leprechauns. He is honored with a Feast Day in Episcopal tradition, while Orthodox Christians have Icons of him with cross in one hand, sprig of shamrocks in the other. In his Confessio, St. Patrick writes how he was humbled every day by hunger for six years tending cattle in the Irish wilderness, and tells of his many trials of brutality at the hands of the king s soldiers. Like St. George and the Dragon and the Prophet Moses, snakes were banished by St. Patrick after they attacked him on his forty day fast. I say believe it despite the fact that there never were snakes in Ireland. BACKPACK AND SCHOOL SUPPLY COLLECTION! We are collecting backpacks and school supplies until August 7th! CAMP VERITAS Camp Veritas is a week long Catholic camp for teenagers 7th-12th grades which has been growing tremendously over the past 5 years. They now have 4 sites with well over 1,000 teens which includes: Below are the two remaining sessions! Mount Saint Mary College (Newburgh) July 24th-30th. Summit Lake Camp (Emmitsburgh, MD) July 31st- Aug. 6th. They need young solid Catholics to volunteer (must be over 18 years old) for at least half of the week as counselors and for other responsibilities to ensure a safe, blessed and joy-filled week for teens. Register as a volunteer or to attend camp at www.campveritas.com! WATCH YOUR POSTURE Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and reverence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. ~Father George Pat Bogert Sr. Added in May Susan Silverstein Laurie Wright Pauline Nerp Carmen Ajce K.
