June 19, 2016 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page 3-565 Message from the Padre In our Gospel this Sunday, Jesus asks his disciples Who do the crowds say that I am? It is a simple question, but certainly not an easy one to answer. According to the crowd - he is John the Baptist, others Elijah and some say he is a prophet. But Jesus was not satisfied with these answers, so He asked his disciples again Who do you say that I am? Peter gives a simple answer of: You are the Christ the Son of God. But how did Peter know that he is indeed the Christ the Son of God. My dear friends, it was by living with Jesus hearing what he said and seeing what he did, that Peter was able to speak and say that Jesus was indeed the Christ the son of God. In the same way, it is through our life-long relationship with Jesus that we will be able to answer this same question, which he asks each one of us today. Yes, one might say, You are the Christ the chosen one who held me close while I was grieving at the death of my loved one. Or one of us might say, You are the Christ, the one who freed me from the resentment I have for my fellowman or You are my Lord and my God...the one who forgave me for the sins I have committed. In all these ways and more, we learn who Christ is in our lives through our life experiences. It is in the crossroads of our joy and misery that we see and recognize his face. It is the feeling of compassion that touches our heart in times of crisis. It is in the sense of duty we feel when confronted by injustice, and it is in the joy when we pray, and the sorrows we encounter in times of darkness that we experience and know who Jesus is. So, on this Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time, we are invited to look and reflect on who Jesus is in our lives. We must realize that through the suffering of Christ the world has been redeemed. Today we are invited to be part of the redemption. It is not easy, but if we know who Christ is and we know who we are and we know how to recognize the face of Christ in others then we can continue to fulfill his mission by living and believing that he is indeed the Christ the Son of God and the Son of Mary and the splendor of the Father. And so for all fathers out there HAPPY FATHER S DAY. Fr. June 19, 2016 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4-565 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 9: 18-24 We find Jesus in today s Gospel taking the question of who his disciples think he is and turning it around, telling us who we must be. If we are to follow him, we must be willing to do as he did, that is, take up our cross each and every day. As we reflect on these readings today, perhaps the question for us is how we lose our life in order to save it.
