TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 10, 2018 Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton Bishop of Belleville We, the people of St. Clare Catholic Parish, In the Diocese of Belleville, are called by God in baptism to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Centered in the Eucharist, and strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we strive to live the Gospel and further the reign of God. We do this by creating a vibrant faith community, by actively promoting justice and evangelization, and by using our gifts in the service of God s people, to give God glory and reverence all of Creation. From the Deacon s Bench... It is my privilege to join Deacon Dennis Vander Ven who was ordained by the Diocese of Belleville ten years ago. Dennis and I thank all the parishioners of Saint Clare of Assisi for their prayers, support, and encouragement in our ministry. I have no ced though that not everyone understands the diaconate. Since the Second Va can Council never intended to define the func ons of permanent deacons in 1964, the confusion is understandable. The role of deacon includes ministries of Word, Cup, and Charity. You may no ce that when there is a deacon at Mass, he reads the Gospel. At ordina on the Bishop installs the deacon as the herald of the Gospel. Emphasizing his close connec on with the congrega on, the deacon is like the other lay ministers who read the Scripture during Mass. Addi onally, the deacon assists the priest by preparing the altar and purifying the vessels a er communion. At communion, the deacon normally is a minister of the Cup as a reminder to pour himself out for the community. Finally, as the image of Christ the Servant, the deacon is involved in the life of the parish. As Christ surrounded himself with disciples, the deacon encourages other parishioners involvement in ministry. There is much more to the ministry of deacon such as presiding at bap sms, weddings, and funerals outside of Mass, being a catechist, and visi ng the sick, but the most important may simply be as a fellow Chris an serving in the world as a sign of God s love. Let me close by addressing rela onships. While I may minister at Saint Clare with Father Jim, unfortunately I do not work for the parish or Father Jim. We both work for the Bishop. In the event that my gi s can serve someone in need somewhere else in the diocese, the Bishop can re-assign me. I don t expect that to happen but it is important that I subject my desires to God s will. Ul mately, my loving wife Mary and our family are my first voca on and will always be my most important rela onship. We look forward to sharing our lives with you our family in Christ. Peace and Blessings Deacon John Gomez From Our Pastor... Health Update: For several years I have had some issues with a disc problem in my lower back. It has gotten to the point of needing a minor surgical procedure simply to remove a disc fragment that has affected my right leg. I will have the surgery at St. Elizabeth hospital on June 13. I will be at home resting for that week and begin physical therapy. Thanks for your prayers...fr. When I was in high school, I struggled to discern God s will for my life. A priest assured me that if I prayed the rosary every day, Mary would tell me what her Son wanted me to do. After some time, the answer became clear: God wanted me to be a priest. Deacon Christopher Sullivan Columbia Magazine June 2017

ALTAR ANGELS JUNE 16 Jan Butler, Arlene Cruz-Peel, Kathy DeVan Linda Riedel, Sharon Ripplinger LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY Illinois Governor Rauner has called on the state legislature to legalize the death penalty in Illinois. This contradicts Catholic moral teaching on the dignity of human life as a gi from God and fails to set an appropriate example for society. There is no logic in teaching that killing is wrong by killing. Our first and primary right to life must also be protected and uncondi onal. There will be an opportunity a er Mass to write le ers to the governor and our representa ves expressing our opposi on to reinsta ng the death penalty in Illinois. Thank you for helping defend the right to life. ST. (They set up the distribu on center right in front of our sister parish's church, Our Lord of Esquipulas!!) There are no known rela ves who were vic ms.
