14th October 2018 21 Pentecost JOB - RESURRECTION FAITH Welcome to today s Service of the Word, an act of worship because God is worth so much to us, and he is worthy of our praise and love. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated in the 10.30 service. How wonderful it is to come together to hear and be encouraged by God s Word and enjoy the company of fellow believers. If you are a visitor, welcome, and may you feel very much at one with us. One of the great books in the Bible is the book of JOB. It deals with two of the greatest predicaments facing the human race. The problem of human suffering and whether a person will live again after death. The Old Testament readings for the four Sundays this October are from the book of Job. Job is a good man who suffers greatly he loses his children, his property and is afflicted with a dreaded disease. His friends visit him and try to help him by attempting to explain his suffering. Instead of helping and comforting Job they only make matters worse. Whatever argument they put forward as to why Job is suffering, Job has a counter argument. Job has his problems with God too, and he on occasions challenges him. But he does not lose faith in God. He still has confidence in his saving help. He declares, I know that my Redeemer lives I shall see God. When Job sees God the questions he has for him are no longer important. Lord, give us this simple faith I know that my Redeemer lives a resurrection faith. Pastor Trevor Reu

But what do we mean when we say that? In whom are we believing? And what does it mean to believe in the Spirit? Are we just saying that we believe he exists? Or something more? This brief series of interactive Bible studies aims to bring us face to face with the person of the Spirit. The more we know who he is, the more we are able to discern his ways. And the more that happens, the more we ll be the community he s created us to be. We'll be focusing on some important Bible passages, not least Jesus' words to his disciples in the upper room immediately before his crucifixion. The series will be recorded with the aim of making it available for download or DVD use by groups or other congregations. Growing Faith at Home Towards the end of last month, our St Petri Grow Coaching team introduced the Faith 5 at both services. The Faith 5 provides a framework to help us to grow closer to our loved ones and deepen our relationship with God. It s not only for families with young children, but any age group can take part in Faith 5. You may choose to do Faith 5 at home or it can also be used in other ways, such as in small groups. So, in all its simplicity, here it is. SHARE your highs and lows of the day READ a Bible verse or story TALK about how the Bible reading might relate to your highs and lows PRAY for one another's highs and lows BLESS one another. God bless you today and always (name) As shared last month, we are inserting the Growing Faith at Home/Faith 5 resource in the bulletin for four weeks. After this we encourage people to access the Faith 5 on our St Petri website it s easy to find. For those unable to use the website, we will continue to have hard copies at the back of the church each Sunday. Blessings! Messy Church on Oct 5 th What an amazing sunny day we had for Messy Church. Our theme was Great Love, which led us in sharing the story of Cecil the Sheep (the parable of the lost sheep). Essentially the message was that we all have a Heavenly Father, who loves us far greater than we could ever imagine. Free Bibles and tracts were offered to both children and adults, and it was wonderful to see that most of our Bibles were taken. Perhaps we will take the opportunity to keep offering Bibles, so if you wish to donate a Bible, we won t say no. Another wonderful part of Messy Church last week, was to see people of all generations attending. One of Messy Church s core values is all-ages, so we are very pleased to have children, parents, youth, individuals, couples, carers and grandparents attend. Everyone is welcome. I wish to thank the many people who are involved in supporting Messy Church. It is a huge team effort. Prayers are number one. We continue to encourage people in praying for this ministry, and especially ask that you join us in prayer on the day of Messy Church (wherever you may be. at 11am when our small group gathers to pray or anytime that works for you) Thank you. Sharon Green - Child Youth Family Ministry
