THE WAY OF THE CROSS 1.) Comes to us unexpectedly vv. 1-2 a.) Unexpectedly - The Cross Begins in the garden V.1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. it was in the garden Eden The Delight, The Pleasure, The Beautiful Genesis 2:8 The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. b.) Unexpectedly The War Continues in the garden v.2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. How Insidious How Hideous Is This Picture That lurking in the garden is a devil bent on death and destruction Have You Noticed That Satan Hates Sanctuaries 2

Genesis 3:1-9 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" The Point Is Satan Knows The Dangers of What Can Happen When a Man, When a Woman, Fellowships With God In Spirit and in Truth THE WAY OF THE CROSS c.) Unexpectedly The Enemy never rests v.2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, Had been, was, would betray This is Satan s Agenda Still Revelation 12:10b..for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. Judas Knew The Places Where Jesus Relaxed. It was the place of special teaching, deeper reflection, one on one fellowship God Alone With The Object of His Redemption 3

Satan Holds No Power Over God None at All. But he does use a dagger to pierce God s heart by stealing the souls men Genesis 3:14-15 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." I don t believe that the bruising of the heel is a reference to Jesus physical sufferings. I believe that it is the pain the Jesus feels when His free gift of salvation is scorned and rejected by lost men Jesus Cares More for Your Soul Than you ever will Amplified Version Matthew 7:13-15 13 "Heaven can be entered only through the narrow gate! The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide enough for all the multitudes who choose its easy way. 14 But the Gateway to Life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it. 15 "Beware of false teachers who come disguised as harmless sheep, but are wolves and will tear you apart. Ezekiel 33:11 "Ezekiel, Said unto them: 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?' saith unto them get among them, tell it in their ears, speak to them, plead my case for them 4

THE WAY OF THE CROSS 2.) Had been determined by God vv. 3-9 a.) Determined was that Jesus should pay the price v.3-4 3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward Two Things Here Arrest Me - #1 therefore, knowing all things #2 He went forward The word in the Greek here is that Jesus Stepped Up Abruptly, He Firmly Advanced Forward THE WAY OF THE CROSS Was a Price Set by The Infinite Holiness Matthew 26:36-44 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. 5

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT IT WAS THERE IN THE GARDEN THAT THE VICTORY WAS WON WATCH OUT Redemption at Work USE CAUTION THE WAY OF THE CROSS Was Pre-Determined by God That The Debt of Sin - That Would Hold Mankind in Spiritual Bankruptcy Forever, Should Be Paid by None Other Than God Himself Isaiah 45:21-22 for there is no other God besides Me, a just God and Savior; there is none besides Me. 22 "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. Luke 1:47 Mary Declared - And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. Matthew 26:39 and Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not my will, but your will be done." if it is possible 6

if the salvation of mankind can be purchased any other way, - let that way be done Mark 14:32-36 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will." Luke 22:41-42 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw away, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. What was the Father s Answer to Jesus Prayer NO! - It s not possible is there any other way that salvation can be obtained? What about The Death of another? What about The Wealth of another? What about The Power of another? What about The Genealogy of another? 7

Galatians 2:21 "do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness can be obtained by keeping the law, then Jesus Christ died in vain." There is No Other Option John the Baptist Said; "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away The sin of The world! 1 John 2:2 And He Himself (excluding all others) is the offer for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. John 14:6 No one comes to the Father except through Me. Hey, That s Dogmatic, It s Narrow Minded, It s Exclusive, It s Not Bi-Partisan, 1 John 5:11-12 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. Wait a Minute Pastor That s Not Very Tolerant It s been said All Roads Lead to God That is true. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment But Only One Road Takes You to Heaven John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 8

John 3:16-18 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Determined was that Jesus should pay the price b.) Determined - was our redemption from eternity v.4b-8a and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?" 5 They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Then-- when He said to them, "I am He,"-- they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8 Jesus answered, "I have told you that I AM He. Jesus is the I AM of the Bible - God Bless America God Who? I was saddened but not surprised at the absence of Jesus Name In the prayer meetings, national cathedral Acts 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. The God of Early America Died on a Cross 9

THE WAY OF THE CROSS 3.) Requires dependence upon God alone vv. 10-14 a.) Self-reliance separates us from God s resources v.10-11 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11 Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Attention Please to Matthew s Account 26:51-53 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52 But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? Jesus Displayed Dependence Upon His Father A Roman Legion Could Vary anywhere From 3000 to 6000 men 3000 to 6000 angels standing ready 2 Kings 19:35 In one evening, One angel killed 185,000 Syrian soldiers Peter might have been a good fisherman But he sure stunk as a gladiator! He Missed and Cut Off the guys ear We cannot judge Peter s intentions and motives I would have done the same thing 10

Three times a criminal could stop and plead his case - Jesus never stopped to defend Himself Requires dependence upon God alone b.) We have no apology, we have no defense v.11b-14 Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" 12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. Isaiah 52:13-53:7 Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; he shall be exalted and extolled and be very high. 14 Just as many were astonished at you, so His visage was marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men; 15 So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; for what had not been told them they shall see, and what they had not heard they shall consider. CHAPTER 53 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; he was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; he was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. His Silence was Our Silence We have no argument to defend, we have innocence to present All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way H i s S i l e n c e S c r e a m e d O u r G u i l t 11

But Soon in Chapter 19 His Shout will Declare Our Forgiveness Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. THE WAY OF THE CROSS 4.) It s a reproach and a shame vv. 15-18 a.) To be related to the condemned v.15-17 15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not." Let s Be Real It would be like today someone asking if we re related to a man who has been convicted of a gross offense Remember, Jesus was Innocent But peter felt guilty by association Hey My Best Friend Just Got The Electric Chair It s a reproach and a shame b.) We re tempted to blend in so as to not stand out v.18 And the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. 12

Matthew 26:58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. This Can t Be Happening - Peter When Doubt is in Charge We Become Ashamed Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed (but once was) of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. afar off / stood / sat / warmed - The Counter Offensive to this Temptation IS THE BAPTISIM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THE WAY OF THE CROSS 5.) Was no secret vv. 19-23 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 "Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said." 22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?" 23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?" a.) Jesus made His mission publicly known v.19-21 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 "Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said." 13

The Book of Books Records The Greatest Story In Your Face - Love b.) Jesus makes it public today v.22-23 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?" 23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?" In accordance to Jewish law, the accused was to be questioned only after the witness had been examined Roman law. Which was in effect demanded that the man accused of a crime must first be considered innocent until convincing proof had been provided and then confirmed. 40 (the number of judgment) 40 different roman and jewish laws were broken to bring about the conviction of Jesus Christ jew and gentile alike were united in the condemnation of Jesus Psalm 2:1-2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Isaiah 28:13-16 So then, the word of the LORD to them will become: Do this and do that, rules oupn rules, -- they will go and fall backward, be injured and snared and captured. 14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers, you who rule the people of Jerusalem. 15 You boast say, "We have made a covenant with death, and with hell we have made an agreement. You say When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by us, it cannot touch us, because we have made lies our protection and falsehood is our hiding place." 16 so thus saith the Sovereign LORD; "Behold, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be ashamed. 14

c.) Jesus makes it public right now Hebrews 4:12-16 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 15
