1 TEACHING #7 FREEDOM IN CHRIST PAUL'S SYSTEM OF TRUTH--- WHAT HAPPENED TO JESUS FDROM THE CROSS TO THE THRONE FREEDOM FOUND IN YOUR TRUE IDENTITY I. TWO KEY WORDS When studying what happened to Jesus from the cross to the throne, there are two key words that we need to consider: "redemption(redeem)" and "cross" 1. Redeem--- "to release on receipt of ransom", "to release by paying a ransom price," "to ransom" 1 Peter 1: 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with such corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. Our redemption was through the precious blood of Jesus. Jesus was the second man (1 Corinthians 15:47). He was THE WORD made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). He took on flesh. He was spiritual alive (His pneuma was in fellowship with "Papa Pneuma"). He said I only say what I hear the Father say and do what I see the Father do (John 12: 50, John 14: 8). He was tempted in all ways as we are, but without sin (Hebrews 4:15). His sinless blood was shed for us-- redeeming blood--- redeeming LOVE. When He arose, Mary encountered Him in the garden at the tomb. When Mary recognized Him, He tells her, "Don't touch me because I haven't ascended to my Father." (John 20:17) A few days later He tells the disciples to handle him. Jesus, the Risen Lord, ascended to heaven into the Holy Place to present His Blood. Hebrews 9:12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with HIS OWN BLOOD He entered the Most Holy Place ONCE FOR ALL, having obtained ETERNAL REDEMPTION. So to who or what did He redeem us? a We were redeemed unto God. Revelations 5: 9 And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation; b We were made righteous by His blood. 14

2 Romans 3: 24 being justified (made righteous) by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His Blood, through faith... c We were redeemed into the kingdom of God. Colossians 1: 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood... d We have an inheritance with all the saints. Colossians 1: 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light redemption through His blood... e We have made kings and priest unto God. Revelations 1:5... To Him (Jesus Christ) who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen f We are redeemed to good works. Titus 2:14 Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. g. We are redeemed to the Blessings of God. Ephesians 1: 3, Deuteronomy 28: 1-14 From who and what did He redeem us? a We have been redeem from Satan and his dominion. Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness (Satan's authority). He has no rule over us--- no authority over us. b We have been redeemed from the curse of the law. Galatians 3:1: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree." also Deuteronomy 28: 15-61) c We are redeemed from all iniquity. Titus 2: 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. d We are redeemed from this present evil world. Galatians 1:4 Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present world, according to the will of God and our Father. We need to understand redemption is a reality--- CHRIST HAS REDEEMED US!!! He has redeemed us. (That is past tense--- it is what He already had done.) He has made us qualified. He has delivered us. He has translated us into the kingdom of God ---- and because He has, WE NOW HAVE!!! 2 "Cross" We need to understand that when Paul uses the word "cross" sometimes he is referring to the complete work of "the cross to the throne." Example scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Christ's redeeming work raises us to sit with Him in the heavenly realm. Ephesians 2:6 When Paul refers to the cross, many times he is referring to the whole spectrum of redemption. B. THE CROSS 15

3 1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. Galatians 6: 14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Paul wants us to stay focused on the whole spectrum of redemption. (Galatians 3:1) He stayed focus all of his life. Paul wrote Philippians in the last years of his life while in prison in Rome and he wrote Philippians 3: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. Paul wanted to know Christ Jesus and what does he emphasis after approximately 30 years of preaching Christ? - the power of his resurrection - fellowship of his sufferings - made conformable unto his death. Paul sets forth "the cross" is not just to save us, but as the principle to develop--- for spiritual development --- to KNOW HIM. In the Garden of Gethsemane: Matthew 26: 37 And he took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me." 39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." verse 38 -my soul is very full of grief, even unto death. Fenton -my soul is crushed with horror and sadness to the point of death. LB -my heart is oppressed with anguish to the point of death. Weymouth "The increasing realization of what lay ahead came to Him with such a sense of overwhelming shock, that He was distraught in His mind. He said, My soul is grief-stricken with a grief like unto death. Barclay (Commentary) Jesus was not just facing physical death, but He was taking on our condition--- our death from Adam and all the curse and to be completely separated from the Father and experience the God's wrath against sin. Jesus was asking if there was any other way for man to be redeemed except Him being made sin and being separated from the Father. The cup He was to drink was "the cup of God's wrath against sin." (Mark 14:36) Luke 22: "Father, is it Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not my will, but Yours, be done." 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Jesus prayed more earnestly and His sweat was as great drops of blood. He was in such agony of spirit, that the pressure on the blood from capillaries in his face mixed with sweat and dropped to the ground. He was resisting sin unto blood. (Hebrew 12:4) Hebrews 5: 7: Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His Godly fear. On the cross, He bore the condition of all mankind in Adam--- our sin nature, our sins, curse--- 16

4 Isaiah 52: 14...So his visage was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men. 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Jesus said in John 3: 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. Let's look back at what Jesus is referring to in the Old Testament. Numbers 21: 4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom: and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: " Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread." 6 So the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died. 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD that He take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live." 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived. Jesus is saying look at me on the cross and keep on looking at what I took on me on the cross for you: spiritual death, penalty for sin (wrath of God), curses, sin, defeat, sickness, poverty, and if you keep looking, the effects will completely be removed---- why? Because they already are, but we must REAL-I-ZE it for ourselves. In God's eyes we were In Christ on the cross. We were crucified with Christ. He says keep looking: James 1: 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. John 8: 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "if you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; 32 and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. C. HELL Jesus was literally raised from the heart of the earth. Acts 2:31...seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption Jesus spoke of himself being in the heart of the earth: Matthew 12: 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Romans 10: 6,7; Acts 13: 33,34) Jesus was in hell suffering our penalty. Hebrews 2:9... we see Jesus...tasting death for everyone. Jesus was made to be sin and tasted death for every man. Because Jesus in his death had assumed everything that had come upon the human race through Adam's sin and paid the penalty--the "ransom", Jesus could bestow on all mankind to those who would receive Him as 17

5 Lord the gracious gift of righteousness and salvation--- deliverance, soundness, wholeness, preservation, safety, health, peace, and prosperity. D. THE TRIUMPHANT RESURRECTION TO THE THRONE Jesus resurrected as the firstborn from the dead. Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Hebrews 1:6 And when God, the Father brought Jesus, his firstborn, into the world, he said, "Let all God's angels worship Him." When John addresses the seven churches in Revelation, he says...from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Revelations 1:5 NASB All whose who receive Jesus are by the Father "predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." Romans 8:29 Jesus was the firstborn of a new creation--- a new species of being---jesus being their last Adam. Jesus was the first of a whole new kind of man. He was the firstborn from the dead. He is the Master! Jesus triumph over hell. He utterly defeated Satan and all demonic power. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:15 Revelations 1:18 (Jesus)"I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hell and of Death." Jesus in his triumph over hell He stripped Satan of his authority and paralyze him. He spoiled the demon host (Colossians 2:15). Jesus rendered powerless him (Satan) who had the power of death, that is the devil. (Hebrews 2:14) When He arose, He now proclaims, "all authority has been given to me in heaven and in earth."matthew 28: 18 and then He authorizes his disciples and then commissions the disciples to go in His authority. In the resurrection, there was tremendous power released. Paul tries to express what he saw and wanted us to see it. He describes it as "what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe according to the working of His mighty power which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated him at His own right hand in the heavenly places far above all principalities and powers and might and dominion and every name that is named not only in this age but also in that which is to come and He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things." "The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest display of power in the history of the universe. The reason such tremendous power was used was because Jesus was destroying everything Satan did in Adam and He was making a new creation. This power is available to every believer." 6 Jesus resurrection was our resurrection. Jesus being seated at the Father's right hand in the heavenly places is our seating at the Father's right hand in the heavenly places. Ephesians 2:4: But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. We are right now seated at the Father's right hand with Christ and we are to reign in life through the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. (Romans 5:17) 19
