SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC PARISH JULY 17, 2016 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Staff Retreat at Holy Spirit Monastery Our Parish staff made a day long retreat at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA this week. Led by Brother Mark, the day began with a talk on the stresses of being the public face of the Church, working according to the Gospels and loving, not labeling those we serve. He explained his policy of being gently blunt when necessary, but reminding us all that we represent much more than ourselves as church leaders. After a wonderful boxed lunch from the onsite Café, the staff joined the Monks in their Breviary of noon prayers in the Abbey Church. The day continued with discussions on various topics effecting our church family, with lots of brainstorming of ideas. Father David and Father Paul, also shared information with the team on several areas, namely the status of our move from Prince Ave. (see story, p.6) Meeting off site, particularly at the a tranquil setting of the Monastery, gave the staff a chance to rest, reflect and renew, before the busy Fall begins. It also gives them a chance to learn more about each other, share personal challenges and grow together as a team. Built in 1944, the Monastery of the Holy Spirt, operates following the Rule of St Benedict and the Cistercian tradition. They lead a monastic way of life in solitude and silence, in assiduous prayer and joyful penitence. Often called Georgia s most beautiful concrete building, many are drawn by its contemplative silence and beauty. Inside the church, the blazing Georgia sun is transformed into rays of beautiful ethereal hues. Welcome! On behalf of the clergy, staff, and our whole community, I welcome you to St. Joseph Catholic Church. To our visitors, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for worshiping with us. We hope you will come again. For those returning to the practice of our Catholic faith, wanting to register or are interested in finding out more about the Catholic Church, please contact our Parish Office for more information. Blessings, Rev. David McGuinness, Pastor

We serve Clarke, Oconee, Jackson, Madison and Oglethorpe counties and work by appointment only. A potential client may call to set up an appointment. After a brief telephone interview to determine eligibility, an appointment is made for the client to meet with a trained volunteer. St Joseph Charities does not merely hand out money; there are specific criteria clients must meet in order to receive help and all clients leave with a plan in place to try to resolve their financial problems in the future. Because SJC has established relationships with local utility companies, we work together to keep electric, gas and water service on and intervene on potential eviction situations on behalf of our clients. There is a limit to the amount of money given which is paid directly to the billing company. No monies are given to the individuals. In addition to rent/mortgage or utilities assistance, help is given with non-narcotic prescriptions. St. Joseph Charities is funded through the generosity of our parishioners in a monthly offertory second collection. On average, the parish contributes $6,000 each month to this important ministry. Because we are staffed by volunteers and housed at Prince Avenue church, all money collected goes to assist those in need. The Charities office accepts calls Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10:00am to Noon. Their direct line is 706-549-4208. Our parish recommends that you give 5% to St. Joseph, 4% to other charities and 1% to the annual Archdiocesan Appeal. We depend on your generosity to cover the cost of our running our Parish. Just like you do at home, our budget covers the cost of things like utility bills, administrative materials, and liturgical expenses. Currently we are drawing from our improvement fund to cover our weekly budget. For those who prefer online giving, go to our website at www.stjosephathens.com and follow the links to Donate Online. If You Build It, They Will Come: An Update on Building Our New Church RE is making Waves! To accommodate our ever growing youth religious education classes, RE is going to a two session or Wave program on Wednesday nights this year. Wave 1 will meet from 6:15 7:15 pm. Wave 2 will run 7:45-8:45 pm. Please stop by the RE office and register now. Volunteers are still needed to assist with check in, manning the hallways and parking lot. Any teens in need of service hours can contact the RE office for volunteer opportunities. Summer Office Hours Monday: CLOSED Tuesday-Thursday: 10:00 am-3:00 PM Friday: CLOSED Phone: 706-548-6332 Campaign Goal III $3,000,000.00 Pledges to Date $2,405,131.44 Pledges Paid $1,678,967.48 Balance Due $726,163.96 On the outside, it may look as though no progress is being made, but behind the scenes we are making great strides! The plans from the developer have made their way past the review stage and will now be voted on by the ACC at their meeting on September 6. Once passed and necessary tax warranties confirmed, the sale is official! We will add the monies from the sale to our Capital Campaign dollars, giving us a total to put toward our new church. We hope to hold another Town Hall soon to discuss how we should move forward on the building: Do we build a church based on our budget at hand or do we build with our monies, plus a small loan. Based on feedback from the parish, we have created a rough outline of all the items to include in an architectural plan. We will fine tune this after our next Town Hall meeting and then turn it over to an architect for a final rendering. This is why there is not an official sketch to show yet. Rather than pay an architect for several reiterations, we pay for one, which will be the final plan, another cost saving device. Many have asked about the status of our front sign, grotto and Mary garden. In order to work properly, electricity and water lines need to be installed first. Rather than move forward on just those specific projects, we have opted to wait and have those lines trenched when the property is trenched for the church building, thus saving us money. And no further landscaping will be done until after the building is done, as all the equipment and trucks may damage anything put up now. The pace we are moving may be frustratingly slow, but is being done so in an effort to be good stewards of the dollars you have generously contributed. We are beginning to bring over items from Prince Avenue that we will repurpose and storage is at a premium as we store things here at Epps. The last things to be removed will be the church pews and windows, which will be stored off site until re-installed in the new church. If you have any information about possible storage options, please notify the Parish office. We won a recent auction through Piedmont College and have acquired a dishwasher, shelving, dish and drinkware and many kitchen items to be used at the school kitchen and the kitchen in the new building. We are in the process of having a food service consultant review our space and help plan the final installation. Since this has to meet various codes to be in service, we are proceeding cautiously. Maybe our next parish meal event can be done in a brand new kitchen!

Reflection on Last Week s Readings The Lord s Laughter: The One whose throne is in heaven sits laughing. Psalm 24 Blessed are those who care; They will let people know they are loved. Blessed are those who are gentle; They will help people to grow as the sun helps the buds to unfold. Blessed are those who, when nothing can be done or said, do not walk away, but remain, to provide a comforting and supportive presence; They will help the sufferer to bear the unbearable. Blessed are those who recognize their own need to receive; they will be able to give all the better. An airliner was flying at a high altitude when two engines caught on fire; the fog was so heavy it eliminated all visibility. As the airliner descended, the passengers were numb with terror, except for a pastor on board who told the passengers, Let us all kneel and pray. All the passengers complied and knelt except one old gent. Why aren t you praying with us? the pastor asked. Because I don t know how, the old man replied. In that case, the pastor advised, do anything religious. So the old man took up an offering. An evangelist was preaching hell-fire and brimstone at a revival in a rural town. This town is full of sinners and everybody around here is going to hell! the preacher shouted. A young boy in a back seat began laughing out loud. That angered the preacher, who said, Son, didn t you hear me say everybody around here is going to hell? Yes, sir, the boy replied, but I ain t from around here! A visiting preacher went to preach for a country church. Near the front door was a box labeled Offering. The preacher dropped in a quarter. After the church service, the treasurer said to the preacher, We pay you whatever is in the offering box. When the box was opened, the preacher found only his quarter.
