ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Holy Day Burden Amos 8:4-7 To some people, religious holidays are a pain in the neck. Holy days interrupt the flow of business. They keep employees from work. The market s demand remains the same, but the rhythm of work is interrupted. If you run a business, holy days get in the way. To some people, religious values are a pain in the neck. If your goal in life is to make money, you do not want to hear about giving to the poor. You cannot keep money if you give it away. You will treat employees fairly only if it helps improve the bottom line. You will use human beings for fun or advancement, but not with respect for their lives and persons. At the time of Amos the prophet, the corrupt business world treated religion with impatience. When will the Sabbath be over, people wondered on that holy day, that we may display the wheat? Business leaders took advantage of the poor and cheated customers. They had no use for religion. They had use only for profits. We fall to the same sin when work takes precedence over prayer, and when profits take precedence over charity. Religion is designed to ease our pain, not to cause pain. It strives to lighten the burden of all, so that all can rejoice together in the love of God. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2009, Resource Publications, Inc., 888-273-7782, www.rpinet.com. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Despite all our time saving gadgets, we still have less leisure and family time. To solve this we created the Myth of Quality Time. Don t be fooled: Quality Time is Quantity Time. Jesus counsels us today, we cannot serve two masters and expect to be happy. Dedicate time to your family. No one in their final hours regretted not spending more time at work. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth). LUKE 16:13 Is money a god that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charity is a pillar of our Faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from being a slave to money and increases our dependence on God and to trust that He will provide all that we need. Prayer of the Faithful That we recognize everything we have is a gift from God, including our money, and to generously share our wealth to support the mission of our Church, locally and around the world. St. Patrick School is off to a great start The 2016 17 school year is off to a great start at St. Patrick School. It has been approximately a month since the teaching staff returned for the start of the new school year and our sports teams started practicing for the fall sports season. Since that time, there has been a whirlwind of activity taking place around here: The teaching staff participated in several training and professional development sessions including Brain Gym, ADHD Awareness and Strategies, CPR, First Aid, and EPI Pen and Automated External Defibrillator training. The elementary staff attended a professional development session at the Van Andel Education Institute while the secondary staff attended a session at the Diocese of Grand Rapids. The school faculty attended the Diocesan Kick Off in Grand Rapids. We hosted our Back-to-School Open House on August 17. Our Back-to-School Tailgate Party was held at our first home football game. We celebrated our first school Mass on Thursday, September 1. The varsity volleyball team won the Silver Division in two invitational tournaments. Not to be outdone by the varsity, the JV volleyball team also won the Silver Division of their first two invitationals. The football team has started the season 3 0 and outscored their opponents 129 6. The Father Flohe Foundation hosted the annual 50-year class reunion for the Class of 1966. Ashton Walker broke the schools cross country record in his first high school invitational and has already broken his own school record at his third meet. We were informed that our varsity girls basketball coach Mr. Al Schrauben will be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame on September 18. The ceremony will take place at Central Michigan University. We're looking forward to even more events before the end of September: The testing window opens for the annual NWEA MAPS test in which our students participate. Picture Day will take place on September 13 and 14. The school faculty will attend the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 18 for Catechetical Sunday. The National Honor Society will host a Red Cross Blood Drive in the Parish Hall on September 20.
