2 The Church of St. George, Minnesota A Letter from the Pastor WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. The week of July 4th is both recreational for vacationers but also inspirational for patriots of this nation. Independence Day is a day of honor for the nation and for all those who have gone before us who have served in our nation s defense: in the military, in government and diplomatic service, and as chaplains. At the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918, World War I met armistice. That is 100 years ago this year, including our nation which entered the more the four years European War of the early 20th century later: just 1 year, 7 months, and 5 days before Armistice Day, Nov 11th, 1918. A special point of pride and patriotism is found in an American who is a poet, soldier and Knight and is featured in an article in the recent monthly COLUMBIA magazine, the official media of the Knights of Columbus. I read this very inspiration article on the life of a virtuous patriot who had the gift of expression through poetry, who served honorably in the military during World War I, and who become a committed Catholic and a Knight. His name, familiar to me even years ago, is Joyce Kilmer. The opening sentence in that article states: A sniper s bullet took the life of Joyce Kilmer, (at the age of 31) the celebrated American Catholic poet and an active member of the Knights of Columbus, on a French battlefield July 30, 1918. The United States had lost in Kilmer a valiant soldier (of the Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment) and its most prominent Catholic poet, as well as a faithful husband and a devoted father of five children. Still today, many schools, streets, squares and parks throughout the country bear his name, as does several K of C councils. He had also corresponded with a Jesuit priest in Wisconsin and through their friendship and discussions, the day would come in 1913 when Kilmer and his wife would be received into the Catholic Church. He wrote to his Jesuit friend: We feel that we re where we belong, and it s a very pleasant feeling. Considered more of a quiet evangelist that an outspoken apologist, Kilmer would go on to publish and lecture on pressing cultural and moral issues of his times. His reputation as a budding American poet was secured with the publication of his poem Trees in 1913. (See the six verses on p. 3, which many will recognize.) Within a few weeks after the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, the 30 year old Kilmer enlisted in the New York National Guard and soon transferred to the Irish Fighting 69th battalion of New York. In his year of service he enjoyed the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers. Upon his death the regiment s chaplain read Kilmer s own war poem Rouge Bouquet over his grave while the poet s fellow soldiers, who loved him dearly, wept. (See poem on p. 3.) Joyce Kilmer is considered to be a great inspiration to past generations and with a bit of rediscovery can be so for us today. His eloquent witness of faith, joy and valor for his fellow troops and for his country is timeless. His most enduring legacy remains his poetic witness to Christ in a sinful and war-torn world. In the month preceding his death, Kilmer wrote of his hope that people would reflect the virtues which are blossoming on the blood-soaked soil of this land. During our 2018 Independence Day holiday week, it is a good decision and a right attitude for all of us to reflect on and value tremendously the lives of outstanding American servicemen and women in the U.S. armed services and to thank God for their lives of heroic service in times of great trial. These valiant soldiers remain a source of great inspiration to us today, who are privileged to reside with liberty and justice, in this nation of many blessings, noble achievements and high standards of character and faith. May we be found as worthy citizens of such a treasured inheritance bestowed on us from those we honor on this Independence Day. Fr. For Death came flying through the air And stopped his flight at the dugout stair, Touched his prey and left them there, Clay to clay. He hid their bodies stealthily In the soil of the land they fought to free And fled away. Now over the grave abrupt and clear Three volleys ring; And perhaps their brave young spirits hear The bugle sing: Go to sleep! Go to sleep! Slumber well where the shell screamed and fell. Let your rifles rest on the muddy floor, You will not need them any more. Danger s past; Now at last, Go to sleep! There is on earth no worthier grave To hold the bodies of the brave Than this place of pain and pride Where they nobly fought and nobly died. Never fear but in the skies Saints and angels stand Smiling with their holy eyes On this new-come band. St. Michael s sword darts through the air And touches the aureole on his hair As he sees them stand saluting there, His stalwart sons; And Patrick, Brigid, Columkill Rejoice that in veins of warriors still The Gael s blood runs. And up to Heaven s doorway floats, From the wood called Rouge Bouquet A delicate cloud of bugle notes That softly say: Farewell! Farewell! Comrades true, born anew, peace to you! Your souls shall be where the heroes are And your memory shine like the morning-star. Brave and dear, Shield us here. Farewell! (The poem was read over Kilmer's own grave when he was interred in France. To this day, it is a tradition of the Fighting 69th to read the poem at memorial services for fallen members of the regiment.) CHILDREN and TEEN CORNER The Games Committee is seeking gently used beanie babies, unused Happy Meals toys, leftover party favors, matchbox cars, and other small new or gently used toys for the prize booth. They could also use monetary donations to defray the expenses of the children s activities. Look for the collection bin at the back of church for the toys. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the office or placed in an envelope marked Corn days games and dropped into the offertory basket. We are still in need of people for the leadership team, brat booth chairs, corn booth chairs, and a volunteer coordinator. Corn Days is a special tradition and major fundraiser for the church - it takes everyone s help to make such a large event successful. Getting involved in the planning process is a fun way to get to know other parishioners and to give back to the church. Please contact the parish office if you can help! TEEN RETREAT, July 20-July 22nd St. George Community Center Fully Alive: Finding Happiness Through God All high school (entering 9th grade) and college age teens are invited to participate in a weekend dedicated to developing personal relationships with God and each other. This weekend of fellowship, food, music, games, talks, and outdoor activities will be a fun and spiritually enriching experience.
