St Catherine of Siena T: 9743 2166 E: principal@scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER W: www.scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au Term 1, Week 8 March 23rd 2018 Easter Reflection Dear Families, Next week is Holy Week, the final week in our journey through Lent. Holy Week is especially significant and sacred as it recalls the last week of Jesus life in preparation for his death and resurrection. It is at Easter that we remember and rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Holy Week we have the opportunity to reflect on the events leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus. His entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The Washing of the Disciples Feet, the Last Supper, Praying in the Garden and Jesus Arrest on Holy Thursday. The Crucifixion of Good Friday and Jesus Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Through these events we see the humanity of Jesus. Thank you to the staff and students who have prepared our Lenten prayer services to assist us in this preparation. Next week we will reflect on the Stations of the Cross on Thursday, 29th March. The fourteen stations will be set up in external spaces throughout the school and groups of students will move through them as a pilgrimage, stopping to watch the dramatisation and join in with prayer. Our Year 5 & 6 students will present these for us. We invite all parents, guardians and family members who are able to, to join us for the Stations of the Cross. If you are able to attend please come to the garden outside the staffroom where the first station will be set up. When we come back in Term 2 we will celebrate Easter and the Risen Christ with a whole school liturgy on Monday 16th April at 2pm in the church. Everyone is most welcome to join us for these liturgies. The Parish of Melton Easter Timetable is included in this newsletter, this lists the days and times for all liturgies throughout Holy Week. At the beginning of next term I will be going on leave for four weeks. I am due back at school on Monday, 14th of May. During my absence Mrs Assunta Iacovino will be in charge of the school. Please do not hesitate to contact her should you require assistance with any matter. On Thursday we had over 200 children ride/ scoot/ skate/ or walk to school for National Ride2school Day. Thank you to all of the children who were involved in this day. Our bike rack was well and truly full with the overflow kept in classrooms for safe keeping. The lap of the basketball court was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Recently we have had children from the school participate in the divisional swimming carnival and the Yr 6 Lightning Premiership. Congratulations to all of our children who participated in these events and competed with a great attitude and team spirit. Each and every one of you put in your very best efforts and should be proud of your achievements. You have all represented the school well and showed that you are good sports and genuinely pleased with your performance regardless of the result. Next week is the last week of Term 1, it seems to have just flown by. As this also coincides with Holy Week children will break up for holidays on Thursday,29th March at 1:30pm. Term 2 begins on Monday, 16th April. Have a great weekend everyone. Carmel Marantelli PRINCIPAL School Closure Days To assist with you with planning supervision for your children please take note of our school closure days for 2018. Wednesday, 2nd May Tuesday, 28th August Monday, 5th November (Day before Cup Day) Friday, 16th November

The Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation brings healing into our lives. Jesus brought healing to the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, he forgave sins and has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation for all members of his mystical Body. Please join us in praying for the following students as they prepare to make their first reconciliation next week. Thank you. All are welcome!

On Wednesday, 21st March it was Harmony Day. On this day our cultural diversity is celebrated - it is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. The children discussed how Australia and our school is a vibrant and multicultural environment. Multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation. What does diversity mean? Diversity means that there are lots of different kinds of things. Just as there are lots of different makes of cars, bikes, washing machines, balls or just about anything you can think of, there is diversity among people. We all have the same general structure - two legs, two arms, two eyes, etc. but we all look different to each other. Skin, hair and eyes can be many different colours and shades of colour. The size and shape of our faces and our bodies are different. Most amazing of all is that our DNA and our fingerprints are different to every other person's. In all the billions of people in the world, each one of us is unique. What does diversity look like? Diversity is not just about our bodies. Where we are born in the world can make for a great deal of diversity too. There are differences in: Languages Religions Beliefs Cultural Traditions Types of houses where we live School Jobs Things to do in our spare time

Continued. What's great about diversity? As more people from different countries come to that country, then there is more diversity in the population of that country. Everyone can learn more about other cultures. Everyone can share and enjoy the differences. Everyone can work together to make the country a good place to live for everyone. You can get to learn and play new games, or find out what the games you play are called in other countries. The grade 4 students designed posters for Harmony Day. Congratulations to Anita from 4P for being the winner of the poster competition and receiving an award from the Major of Melton Shire. PE News Year 6 Summer Sport Congratulations to all our Year 6 sport teams who took part in the Lightning Cup last Friday. It was a perfect day of weather and all teams had fun representing the school. Thank you to all the teachers who supported the event and to all the students who took part. School Athletics Day A permission form was sent home this week for Athletics Day. You may have noticed the error on the form where there was nowhere to put your child s name. Apologies for this oversight, if you have not returned the note, please place your child s name at the bottom of this note and return to your classroom teacher. Thank you for your understanding. Divisional Swimming Congratulations to Elesha Gruis, Ryan Dreaver and Oliver Dreaver who represented St Catherine of Siena at the District Swimming last week. They swam extremely well and the school is proud of their achievements. Cross Country Trials Thank you to all the students who tried out for the cross country team. The team will be announced at the end of next week. Training will take place next week for some of the students who took part in the trials. Ride 2 School Day A big thank you to all the students who walked, rode or skated to school. We even had a student on roller blades! Our parade on Thursday morning was a great way to promote an active lifestyle and a healthy start to the school day by scooting, riding or walking to school. Some studies show that children who ride or walk to school are more ready for learning than those driven to school. Thanks Kate Crawford and Brittni Summers PE Teachers
