The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York Music does what words alone cannot do The role of music is to serve the needs of the Liturgy and not dominate it, seek to entertain, or draw attention to itself or the musicians. Sing to the Lord Did you realize that you sang in excess of 100 different hymns and songs this past year? That is quite an accomplishment. I am so grateful for all your hearty sung participation in the Mass and other liturgical celebrations throughout the year. What we sing at Mass is not merely Muzak (background music entertainment) but truly a part of the liturgy. Although I am happy with our current choir roster, there is always room for new members. Consider joining one of the St. Luke choirs: Adult, Italian, Youth, Funeral. There have been many studies on the value of singing in a group, from knowing scripture to being good for your health. I recently read an article suggesting: Choir Singing Could Help Reduce Anxiety, a study finds whether it's an a cappella group or the church chorale, that singing in a choir could do a lot for your state of mind. This is another good reason among the many others to join the choir. So come September why not join us as we again praise God in song. Feel free to contact the Music Office. I would particularly like to invite new members of our Funeral Choir. No rehearsal is necessary to be in this choir, just the desire to serve God s people at a difficult time. I am forever grateful to the 4 choirs of St. Luke church which enhance our liturgies each week. They generously give of their time and talent and have sung around 60 anthems. The Italian and Youth choirs also increased their repertoire and numbers. The Funeral choir sang for more than 60 funerals. I thank them all for their devotion to St. Luke Church. Many have asked why they don t see me on The Net singing the noon Mass from St. James Cathedral. After nearly 20 years I have decided to give that a rest. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Jessica Tranzillo Smith Director of Music 1

Fourth of July Monsignor Tosi and Staff hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July. As we commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence this July 4th, let us take a few moments for silence and appreciation for all we have in our lives, and for those who came before us who fought so that we may live in a free country. INDEPENDENCE DAY PRAYER God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being. Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong. Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 2

Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for Vocation Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and the laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told your Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ the great High Priest, Amen. 12
