From the Rector... Greetings in the name of Christ When I was in Tescos in the lead up to Valentine s Day there was a vast array of flowers on display, with staff busy restocking the shelves and stands as the flowers were bought; and it wasn t just in Tescos it was the same in other businesses and shops. The same will probably be true in the lead up to Mothering Sunday. People who research and study what we buy tell us that millions of pounds are spent on flowers, cards and gifts for Valentine s Day and on Mothering Sunday. Giving flowers, cards or gifts are some of the ways people tell others they love them. Although God created a wonderful world with incredible resources and astounding beauty, flowers aren t the clearest demonstration of his love for us. Amazingly, the clearest demonstration of God s love for us is a cross. Romans 5:8 tells us that God shows his great love for us by sending his Son to die for us, while we were still sinners. Jesus death on the cross wasn t an accident or simply the consequence of the scheming of the Jewish leaders or the betrayal by Judas, one of his disciples. Jesus death on the cross was planned by God, it was the ultimate purpose for which the Son of God left the glory and splendour of heaven, for which he set aside his divine rights and privileges and came to earth. The cross tells us that God loves us and wants us to know him and have a relationship with him. God loved the people of the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection tells us that God reaches out to us in love, making it possible for us to know forgiveness for our sin and a restored relationship with God when we respond to what Jesus has done for us and put our trust in him as our Saviour. When someone gives flowers or a gift to a loved one, it s a way of saying I love you. The flowers or the gift are normally received and accepted with appreciation and thankfulness. In the cross and through the cross God says, I love you. Through Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection forgiveness of sin and restored relationship with God is available to us. How have you responded to his love, how are you responding to his love? Accept the gift, experience the relationship, live the life. Roderic seapatrick parish magazine 03

Men s Society Mr Greg Berry QC addressed a well-attended meeting of the Men Society on Monday 15th February. Greg is one of Northern Ireland s leading barristers and he began his talk by showing and explaining the purpose of his court robes and dress. His court wigs were then passed round the members whilst Greg explained when each wig should be worn. He next outlined his work as barrister, emphasising the need for good preparation in order to master his brief and present the best possible defence case in front of the court. He included quite a number of amusing incidents, he encountered during his time at the bar and so his talk was both informative and entertaining. He concluded by inviting questions from those present, which must have been strange for him as he normally is the one asking the questions. He received a large number of questions and answered them with clarity and not without a little humour when appropriate. David Adams CMSI Lent Project Every year, CMSI produces a Children s Resource (also known as the Annual Project ), this year s the theme is the Meeting Place: Bringing People Together The Meeting Place explores global mission, with a particular focus on Uganda. Coming Soon Time Out for Parents Being a parent isn t always easy. It can be both rewarding and challenging. Sometimes it can be good to compare notes and share experiences with other parents. Care for the Family is a registered charity and has been working to strengthen family life since 1988. Our aim is to promote strong family relationships and to help those who face family difficulties. The Time Out for Parents Early Years is a 6 session course which aims to support and encourage parents who are parenting children up to 4 years old. We are planning to hold this course on Wednesday nights starting on 13th April at 8.00pm in Holy Trinity Parish Hall. Each session will last 1 hour approximately. The theme for each week will be: 1. What being a parent is really like. 2. Children s needs. 3. Play and listening. 4. Parenting styles and setting boundaries 5. Discipline and keeping your child safe. 6. The wider family. Care for the Family courses are here to support you and to help you build a strong and secure relationship with your child. Our course will be facilitated by Suzie and Jonny Hull from Markethill, who are the parents of 3 children aged 20 to 13. Our evenings together will be very informal and relaxed and will be tailored to the needs of the group. We look forward to welcoming you on Wednesday nights. Date for your Diary - Fete This year s Parish Fete will be on Saturday 18th June. Please keep the date free. If you would like to help with the Fete in any way, please contact the Parish Office. This year, we are making an appeal for plant pots - at least 3 diameter and any donations will be gratefully received. For those of you with green fingers when preparing for the new season, would you consider planting a few extra seeds or taking a few extra cuttings for our Plant Stall? Also, if anyone feels that they could bring on some bedding plants, please leave your contact details with the Parish Office and I will contact you. Many thanks Robert Robinson Fete Chairman seapatrick parish magazine 11
