RABBI'S MESSAGE With the December solstice just around the corner, one wonders with ample anxiety just what type of weather might be in store for us this winter. In recent months, we experienced an earthquake; a hailstorm, which for a month kept our freezer packed with baseball-sized ice-spheres; a hurricane, that shut down the neighborhood along with the entire Metro New York region, but did not prevent the multiple semachot at our shul that weekend; an October snowfall, that downed power lines and had my brother s family moving out of their house and into ours; and a November with the warmest temperatures in recorded history. Forget Murphy: our own experience teaches that if there is something that can be expected, it is the unexpected. This is perhaps the common denominator to the complementary miracles of Chanuka. Chanuka too is about expecting the unexpected: the defeat of the mighty in the hands of weak, the masses in the hands of the few... the wicked in the hands of the righteous. The triumph of good over evil, of principle over the popular, while not something we can necessarily take for granted, is a source of inspiration. The Chanuka lights, which commemorate both the discovery and then the endurance of a lone canister of unadulterated oil, illuminate our spirits with the sense that even when it seems all is lost, there is hope. As we are about to celebrate the Chanukat Ha- Mishkan and Chanukat Ha-Mizbeach the dedication of the Tabernacle and the rededication of the Altar during the Biblical and Hasmonean periods respectively we also look forward to our own Chanukat Ha-Mikvah. Surely, fifty years ago, it was beyond anyone s wildest dreams that one day we would have our own mikvah, but even during the thirteen years since the project s formal inception many of us wondered whether this Herculean task would ever come to fruition. Miracles do happen with Divine intervention but often, as in this case, only when accompanied by human initiative and effort in New Hyde Park, ba-yamim ha-hem ba-zman ha-zeh, in our days like in times of antiquity. A happy and delightful Chanuka to you and your family. Lawrence Teitelman PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Congregants, On behalf of the Executive Board, I would like to wish you a happy Chanukah and hope you are enjoying this festival of lights. This is the holiday on which we celebrate the triumph of the Maccabim over the Greeks. The Maccabim were small in number but with high spirits and Emunah in Hashem, they came through for Am Yisrael and restored glory and purity for klal Yisrael and the Beit Hamikdash. Throughout the ages, the Greeks, Romans, and countless others, prevented us from keeping Shabbat and Yom Tovim. They prevented us from performing the mitzvah of Brit Milah. They prevented us from using Mikvaot and performing the mitzvah of Taharat Mishpacha. They prevented us from learning and practicing our beloved Torah. Today at Young Israel of New Hyde Park, we participate in our weekly Torah classes and we attend our Minyanim every morning and evening. We enjoy our beautiful Shabbat and Yom Tov services, and almost every Shabbat we happily announce the birth of a Jewish boy or girl, the newest member of klal Yisrael. In addition, we have the privilege of enjoying many Jewish events. Finally, we are getting close to the completion of our amazing project, the Mikvah Yisrael of New Hyde Park. This project raises the level of purity and Kedushah for our Shul and our community. That is why I would like to call us the Maccabim of our generation. Dear congregants and friends, Thanks to your generosity and complete faith in this project, and with the help of our partners at the Mikvah USA Organization, I am proud to say that G-D willing, our community will have the merit of having one of the most beautiful and modern Mikvaot in the Northeast Queens area. May we go from strength to strength with our Torah, our Kedushah and our purity. David Rouhani President 4
