By the time week two rolls around, plenty of well-meaning people have skipped, neglected, or outright forgotten their Lenten resolutions at least once. It can be easy to start excusing our Lenten commitments altogether. Last week we saw Jesus driven into the desert. This Sunday, we see Jesus leading his disciples to an equally barren place: he "led them up a high mountain apart by themselves." But what happens there? "And he was transfigured before them and his clothes became dazzling white." Today's Gospel reminds us of the goal. We don't enter into the desert for the sake of suffering, but for the sake of transformation. Mountain imagery is prevalent throughout Scripture. The sacrifice of Isaac, Moses receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah's revelation of God as a tiny whispering sound: all these occur on the mountaintop. Mountains are strenuous to hike. To assist the traveler in the assent, trails often involve switchbacks. These lead the traveler back and forth across the mountainside, sometimes appearing as if hardly any ground is gained. Perhaps Peter, James, and John hiked a similar path as Jesus led them up the side of Mount Tabor. A climb is difficult. A climb in a barren place leaves you thirsty, exhausted, and quite possibly frustrated or discouraged. Yet this is precisely how Jesus leads his closest disciples. Why? Because he has something to reveal to them. Practically speaking, Jesus needed to bring Peter, James and John away from the crowds for this revelation of glory to remain hidden. There are spiritual truths we will encounter only if we pass through difficulty. So let's persevere this Lent! Today's Gospel invites us to trust that, if we persevere in following Jesus, he'll lead us to something beautiful and glorious as well. Sign up for Online Giving at www.holysepulcher.org. (Mobile app also available.)

FEBRUARY 25, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT PAGE 3 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (March 7th, 14th and 21st) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time with him. INSTRUMENTALISTS Instrumentalists are needed for the upcoming liturgies - Palm, Sunday, Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. If you are interested in participating in these liturgies, please see Madlyn, Directress of Music Ministries, after any weekend Mass. You can also email her at deritoma@hotmail.com so that music can be put together. 12th Annual Gathering of Catholic Men The 12th Annual Gathering of Catholic Men, sponsored by the Catholic Men s Fellowship of Pittsburgh will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School. Hear dynamic speakers, share experiences and ideas to re-energize and help us live out our Catholic faith in a world in need but not always accepting of it. An excellent opportunity to witness the power of God through the support of thousands of other Catholic men dealing with the daily challenges and struggles of life. Discounted rates for pre-registering and for groups of 3, and youth / students (age 13-22). Food is included in the cost of the ticket. Free parking. Please call Ted Kopczyk at 412-310-3825 with questions or visit www.cmfpitt.org to pre-register. 40 Days for Life Holy Sepulcher will again be participating in the 40 Days for Life vigil in front of Planned Parenthood office on Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh on Friday, March 16 from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. If you are able to join us for even an hour or two, we would welcome your presence as we pray for an end to abortion. Since the 40 Days campaign began in 2007, 90 abortion facilities have closed and at least 170 abortion facility workers have left their jobs, at locations where 40 Days volunteers have come to pray. All that is necessary is to stand on the sidewalk, holding a sign that says Pray to End Abortion, and join us in prayer. For more information, call Debbie Busin at 724-510-8670 or Gretchen Cararie at 724-898-2529. NEXT WOMEN S FELLOWSHIP The next women s fellowship is Thursday, March 1 from 7:00-8:30 pm in the Early Childhood Development Center Conference Room. We will continue with Courageous Women: A Study on the Heroines of Biblical History. We ll complete our discussion of the Maccabean Mother (2 Maccabees Chap. 7); and begin to read and reflect on Mary Magdalene: Woman of Ministry (Luke 8: 1-3). All women welcome to join in for prayer, reflection, and fellowship! CHURCH MINISTRY SCHEDULE Mar. 3, 2018 4:00 pm Eucharistic Ministers L. Fey M. Johnson C. Matta D. Matta K. Orban R. Shaw J. Our Campaign for The Church Alive! has been a very successful, all-inclusive capital and endowment campaign. The foresight of our pastoral council, finance committee and previous pastor, were very accurate in realizing the needs of the parish. We have presently accomplished, through the generosity of our parishioners, most of the outlined goals of the Campaign. We are in the process of amending our Case Statement to identify additional goals and projects including roof repairs to the church and school, fire alarm system replacement in the school / faith formation building, repairs / replacement of the new church front doors, repairs at the rectory, and Computer / Technology upgrades for the church and school. We are very blessed to be in a position to have raised more money than was anticipated. We thank God for the opportunity to continue to make upgrades and improvements as dictated by the natural progression of aging to the campus here at Holy Sepulcher Church and School. We will continue to update you on our progress with these projects. IT S BIG! But the Next School Fundraiser Won t Even Cost You a Dime! We are always looking for a way to reach out beyond our border too, we are gearing up for our next service project. Did you know that 300 million children around the world do not have even one pair of shoes? 1.4 billion people are susceptible to diseases that could easily be prevented by a decent pair of shoes. We have an opportunity to improve the world! Let s gather our excess and let it be put to good use! Check your closets and ask family and neighbors to check their closets too for shoes that are not being used and yet are still in good condition to donate. They can be dropped off at the school or at the church in the bin in the coat room marked Shoe Drive. Student Council will be rubber banding the shoes and placing them in bags of 25 pairs. Once we have 2500 pairs of shoes, we will send them to countries in need, including Puerto Rico. Let our HSCS soul be transformed into soles for others! CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE CWNC invites you to our Spring Open House on Sunday, March 18 from 1:30-3:30 pm. Please contact Kristine Marsico at 724-586-5022 or advancement@holysepulcher.org to schedule a tour. Q Who were you created in the image of and what are you & here to do? A Jesus and His disciples come face to face with this question as He was transfigured before their eyes. We finally see Jesus in all his splendid glory. However, He s not just called to be that dazzling figure on the mountaintop, He is also called to come down and be the Jesus who was crucified. This is often the way it is with us too; we are not called to be just one thing. It is never all glory or all suffering. Life is both. In the First Reading and Gospel we discover a profound message about God s mercy and faithfulness in times of trouble. The stories remind us of our need to depend fully and without question on the tender mercies of God. Jesus asks us to descend with Him, and, in hope, get to work building His kingdom. During Lent, invite your family to brainstorm a way to tangibly make life better for someone in your neighborhood or parish community.
