Page 2 - Issue 33 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 13, 2017 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A Our Gospel this weekend begins immediately after the miraculous Feeding of the 5,000. This event is the only miracle recorded in all 4 Gospels. If it was significant for them, it should likewise be significant in our minds as well. Among other things this miracle teaches us, it is a prefigurement of the Eucharist for us. At every Mass, bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ through the priest. This is a really big deal! Jesus is actually present on the altar at Mass, whether we believe it or not. The challenge for us may be to let this profound mystery permeate our daily lives. One of the many duties for me as a priest is to help foster reverence and devotion of the Eucharist, not just by what I say, but by what I do. This is one of the reasons why I genuflect a lot when I pass the tabernacle. Jesus is actually present in the Blessed Sacrament that resides in the tabernacle. What a way to prepare for receiving Him in Communion by quieting our lips and our hearts and conversing with Him whom we ll soon receive! Another action that I do, that you all may have noticed, that during the Eucharistic Prayer, after saying the words of consecration over the host, I hold my fingers in a funny way, as depicted in the picture. Some of you may have wondered why I do this. Firstly, it serves a very practical function. Once the words of consecration are said, that piece of bread becomes the Body of Christ in my hands. There could be particles of the Eucharist on my fingers, and so I keep my index finger and thumb together until I can purify them after distributing Communion. I hope to be communicating the Real Presence to everyone by doing this. The only reason for doing this is because Jesus is made present on the altar, literally in my hands He becomes present to us. Another reason is that we become affected when we come in contact with Jesus, whether it is in our hearts in prayer, or by coming in contact with Him in the Eucharist. We are affected spiritually every time we receive Him worthily in Communion. It is my hope that this outward action, even though it may look silly, and even though it makes me feel silly, helps to outwardly show was is going on interiorly when we come in contact with the Body and Blood of Christ, most particularly when we receive Him at Mass. Let us take time to thank God for giving us Himself in the Eucharist. There is no better way to thank God for everything than by going to Mass because the Eucharist means thanksgiving. May everyday be a thanksgiving for us. And may everyday provide us opportunities to imitate Him whom we receive at Mass, so that we can utter the same words of St. Paul who said, It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The August Respect Life Focus - Capital Punishment/Mercy Behind Bars Prayer to End the Use of the Death Penalty Merciful Father, we ask your blessing on all we do to build a culture of life. Hear our prayers for those impacted by the death penalty. We pray for all people, that their lives and dignity as children of a loving God may be respected and protected in all stages and circumstances. We pray for victims of violence and their families, that they may experience our love and support and find comfort in your compassion and in the promise of eternal life. We pray for those on death row, that their lives may be spared, that the innocent may be freed and that the guilty may come to acknowledge their faults and seek reconciliation with you. We pray for the families of those who are facing execution, that they may be comforted by your love and compassion. We pray for civic leaders, that they may commit themselves to respecting every human life and ending the use of the death penalty in our land. Compassionate Father, give us wisdom and hearts filled with your love. Guide us as we work to end the use of the death penalty and to build a society that truly chooses life in all situations. We ask this Father through your Son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen
