St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Catholic Ethics. One of our friars, Fr. Tom Nairn, is the senior director of ethics for the Catholic Health Association. Part of Fr. Tom's job is to travel throughout the world giving presentations on Catholic ethics. Fr. Tom has agreed to come to Teutopolis on Monday, June 29, to talk about Catholic ethics. The primary focus will be on end-oflife issues--a topic that many families have to deal with in their care of loved ones. The presentation will take place in the church beginning at 7:30 pm. This presentation is open to the public, so please spread the word to any health care providers that you know. Mission Trip to Bolivia. In recent months, Dr. Dan Niebrugge, Dr. Paul Rhodes, Fr. Ron Hilt, Sr. Anita Irose, Jeanna Hook, Lauren Hook, and Carol Toney undertook a mission trip to Bolivia in the area where Sr. Ann Fearday works. Paul and Carol will present a slide show of the mission trip in the Museum Dining Room on Tuesday, June 16, at 6:30 p.m. Sr. Ann is currently visiting here at home, and we expect that she will be present to offer additional details and to answer questions. Please come and learn more about the mission in Bolivia. Assisi for Africa. If you were unable to donate last weekend at Mass to our parish mission project, please consider donating to Father Damien Isabell s work caring for abandoned and homeless youth, and helping with the local Franciscan seminary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This Year of Consecrated Life celebrates the many women and men who have consecrated themselves to God by the vows of poverty, chastity (celibacy), and obedience. There are 4 groups of consecrated religious in St. Francis Parish Franciscan Friars of the Sacred Heart Province, Franciscan Sister of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ "While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, 'Take it; this is my body.'" Celebrating the Passover meal was nothing new for the disciples. They shared bread and wine with their families and friends at this special ritual meal every year as a part of their Jewish heritage. But when they were making preparations for this particular sacred supper, they did not know how different this meal was going to be. On this night, Jesus changed the formula. Instead of hearing only the ancient words of the Passover prayers that his followers probably knew by heart, they heard these new, unexpected, and, frankly, quite dramatic words: "This is my body... This is my blood." Nobody had ever made such an unusual claim before. But this was more than a statement. It was a command. Not only did Jesus enlighten his disciples about the miracle taking place as the bread and wine became his body and blood, but he also ordered them to "take it." Being passive observers was not enough. Jesus wanted his followers to be personally involved in accepting and receiving his body and blood. The gift of the Eucharist that Jesus instituted for all believers at that Last Supper is not just a sign or a symbol of Jesus' sacrifice. It is something that we are called to participate in. He has given us the instruction to take the Eucharistic bread--his body hidden within it--and to make it part of ourselves. Through this great sacrament, which we celebrate on today's feast of Corpus Christi, we are able to be united, in a deeply mystical yet truly physical way, to our Lord and Savior. This union brings about the promise in today's Alleluia from John's Gospel: "Whoever eats this bread will live forever."

One of my coworkers said that we Catholics believe we kill Christ again when we celebrate the Mass since it is his sacrifice. I know that is not right, but how do we explain it? A. We do indeed believe that the Mass is the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and we believe that the sacrifice is made present again on the altar. But when it is made present again, it is not to repeat it, but to join ourselves to it. The ritual of the Mass makes the sacrifice of the cross present again. We are joined to the saving work of Christ, not just simply remembering it. The closest thing we might have in our culture is when a couple saves some wedding cake in the freezer, and on their first anniversary they may watch their wedding video and eat the cake, all to recapture the moment. The Jews celebrate a Seder meal, not to remember the Passover, but to participate in it through the ritual foods, questions, and readings. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the Mass as the "Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ?" (#1330). To think that we must sacrifice Christ over and over again would negate what he did on Calvary. To celebrate and renew it each day allows us to participate in it.
