We often associate it with condemnation, and in the Gospels, we associate it with the Pharisees. Today's Gospel features the Pharisees doing exactly what we expect. "They observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands." The Jewish people had strict purification laws that applied to all areas of life. The Pharisees attempt to accuse Jesus of not following the ancestral traditions. Jesus doesn't take offense at their judgments per se. He instead points out the hypocrisy of their words. "You hypocrites - this people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me." From there, Jesus turns his attention to the concerns of the heart. "The things that come from within are what defile." He lists off a number of sins, including some the Pharisees were likely struggling with, including evil thoughts, envy, and arrogance. When we examine the list, perhaps we're reminded of our own trips to the confessional! As we strive to follow Jesus and live with integrity, we must be aware of our hearts. We must judge our own actions. Are they leading us closer to God or away from Him? Are we growing in love of our neighbor, or are we becoming more closed in on ourselves? As we move into this week, consider the state of our own heart. Perhaps you are overly scrupulous in less important areas. Perhaps there are large areas of overlooked sin that you've excused for too long. Whatever it is, the judgment of God need not cripple us. He offers us a share in His mercy as soon as we turn to Him. This week, allow your heart to be transformed! Prayer for Pope Francis Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, Pope Francis, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 A Message From Father Bob With great sadness, I share that both Joanne Castello and Dana Knox will be leaving Holy Sepulcher Parish to pursue other employment opportunities. Dana has faithfully served as Parish Secretary for over seven years and Joanne has served the parish as an Administrative Assistant to the Pastor and also in the Faith Formation Office for the past ten years. Joanne was responsible for scheduling all Funerals and Baptisms plus other duties that came up daily. Joanne also served as the Parish Safe Environment Coordinator. When you would call the Parish Office, you would hear the pleasant voice of Dana answering the phone. Dana was also responsible for doing the weekly Parish bulletin and scheduling Mass Intentions and parish meetings. These are only SOME of the duties that Dana and Joanne were responsible for. Dana s last day will be on Friday, September 7, 2018 and Joanne s last day will be on Thursday, September 20, 2018. On behalf of the Parish, I offer my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Joanne and Dana for their service and dedication to Holy Sepulcher Parish. May God bless them in their future endeavors. USHERS NEEDED Holy Sepulcher is looking for Greeters/Ushers at our weekend masses, especially the 10:30 mass. Greeters are responsible for welcoming the parishioners to church, answering questions and asking families to present the gifts. Ushers responsibilities are to assist with seating of parishioners, help with collections, hand out bulletins at the end of mass and assist in any emergencies. If you are interested please contact the parish office for more information. Prayer Chain Do you have a prayer request? Would you like to be a part of our Army of Prayer that prays for those requests? Would you like to receive a copy of the prayer intentions? If so, contact the parish office at 724-586-7610 or email hscprayerchain@gmail.com. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international society founded by Frederic Ozanam, a French priest who spent his life ministering to the poor & under privileged in Paris, France. The organization was named after the patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul. This society, although it operates apart from the parish, works in conjunction with the diocese to assist the poor & needy in southern Butler County. Donations put in the Poor Box in the back of the Sanctuary support this cause. If you would like to be a part of this outreach organization, contact the parish office. Eucharistic Adoration Day On Wednesday, September 5, we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend some personal time with Our Lord during this special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers. CHURCH MINISTRY SCHEDULE Sept. 8, 2018 6:00 pm Eucharistic Ministers M. Johnson C. Loncaric K. RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which is a process through which non-baptized adults enter the Catholic Church. It can also include those who have been baptized in other Christian denominations who seek to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Often baptized Catholics who have not received other sacraments or who know little about the faith or have not practiced their faith for some time participate in the RCIA as a means to complete their initiation into the Church.
