Encounters of the Heart ~Parish Mission 2018~ Monday, February 19th Learning the Heart of Christ Tuesday, February 20th Healing the Heart of Christ Wednesday, February 21st Receiving the Heart of Christ 7:30-8:30pm Presented by Fr. Matthew Bozovsky in the Basilica Reception following in the Rectory after Monday & Wednesday night www.qasparish.org 6280 N. Sauganash Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60646 Phone: 773-736-6060 Fax: 773-736-6099

From the Pastor Four of the most important days in the year for the people of Queen of All Saints Parish begin today. Father Matt Bozosky will introduce our parish lenten mission at all the Masses this weekend and will present the mission itself on the following three days: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 19 th, 20 th and 21 st from 7:30-8:30 PM in the Basilica. Months ago I asked all groups and organizations of the parish to reschedule any activities for those times so that they could be free to attend our parish lenten mission. This mission is more important in the life of our parish than any other meeting or organizational activity. It provides us with an opportunity to focus sharply on our purpose as a believing people, a community of faith, a parish family. Social, charitable, administrative and educational opportunities are vital to healthy parish life, but the spiritual dimension of our lives as individuals and as members of a parish is even more important. These four days and nights are intended to help all of us rediscover our spirits and spend some time attending to the longings of our souls. Our mission speaker is Father Matt Bozovsky, presently associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Wilmette. The theme for our mission is Encounters of the Heart. Father Matt will explore this theme by probing the topic, Learning the Heart of Christ on Monday, Healing the Heart of Christ on Tuesday and Receivng the Heart of Christ on Wednesday. Our Parish Council, headed by Joe Onofrio, will host receptions in the rectory immediately following the mission talks on Monday and Wednesday so that attendees may enjoy one another s company and ask further questions of our mission speaker. I am very grateful to all the members of our Parish Council for their gracious hospitality. Our parish mission is one of the primary instruments of evangelization for Queen of All Saints. We have over three thousand or so households registered in the current parish census, but only about half of those families regularly participate in the life of the parish. We also suspect from current demographic data that there are even more Catholics within the boundaries of Queen of All Saints who are not registered in the parish. We estimate that there are several hundred Catholic children, for example, who are not enrolled in either of our programs of Catholic education and formation. These are the families to whom we are reaching out most earnestly, longing to help them feel that they really belong here, longing to welcome them home to their Church and longing to have them rediscover their baptismal call to follow Christ. Our parish mission is a pivotally important component of our ongoing initiative. You don t have to be an exemplary Catholic to attend the mission; you don t have to be a Catholic at all. We won t be asking any questions, giving any tests or making any judgments. We will just be extending the loving arms of Christ to all who come. Please set the times of our parish lenten mission aside so that you can fully participate. Please consider inviting a neighbor to attend with you. I know it s difficult for anybody to make such a commitment three nights in a row, especially if they have children. But if you can come even one night, or if a husband and wife can cover for each other with the children in order to come two nights, that would be wonderful. We should never let the perfect stand in the way of the good. God bless you and may the Holy Spirit guide our parish lenten mission. Monsignor John Pollard 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

LEGISLATIVE ALERT Please Make a Phone Call Senate Bill 2236 attacks the new Tuition Scholarship program that allows low-income and working class children to receive tuition scholarships to attend the school of their choice. Senate Bill 2236 would effectively stop funding for tuition scholarship by tying funding for tuition scholarships to the general budget process. Please make a phone call to your state senator to express opposition to Senate Bill 2236. Your state senator is: Senator Ira I. Silverstein, 773-743-5015 What Year Did You Graduate from QAS? 1999 Where did you go to High School? I graduated from Loyola in 2003. QAS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT If applicable, where did you go to College and what did you study? I graduated from DePaul University with a BA in Psychology What is your favorite memory of QAS? I have many great memories from my years at QAS. Two highlights would be basketball season and 8 th grade dances. GINA STEFANI What makes QAS unique? I believe that QAS is unique in that it truly represents a community. A bonus note, I am very excited my family is opening a restaurant, Stefani Prime, in the neighborhood this year. We hope we will see familiar faces from the Parish, as well as meet new people. How has QAS influenced your life? The most significant contribution from QAS is my core group of friends. You don t hear often that people continue friendships from grade school. I can honestly say the majority of my closest friends were established from QAS. This group of friends have been by my side through the ups and downs of life and for that I will always appreciate and have the fondest memories of my time at QAS. 8 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God. - Mark 1:14 1st Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. Stewardship For Lent Christian stewards will greet Lent with the best of intentions. But sometimes, we reach Easter disappointed in our own efforts. Here are some suggestions for keeping us on task during this Lenten season: Plan ahead. Give thought and prayer to what will most help you draw closer to Jesus during this special season. Write your intentions down, and review them often. Keep it simple. Like those folks who sign up for gym memberships on January 1 and give up by January 15, sometimes we approach Lent with too many resolutions. Be realistic and don t set yourself up for guilt. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the pillars of Lent. Try to do one thing in each of these categories. Stretch yourself a bit and come up with something new and challenging. Prepare your home with Lenten reminders. If you have no crucifix in your living areas, place one there. Simplify something tangible in your daily life, like your closet or your schedule. Take your family to the Stations of the Cross at least once. Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and encourage your family to do so. Make it a point to prepare for and participate in the beautiful Triduum liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and even the Easter Vigil. After Easter, reflect on your Lenten practices. Remember, God s mercy to us is unlimited. It s not all about what we did, but what God does within us. Feb 1 to 4, 2017 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $16,749.78 458 Loose Donation $2,988.60 n/a Elect. Giving $3,245.00 53 Total $22,983.38 YTD Total $870,342.04 Our Basilica Repair Work Continues We have now begun work on replacing the ceiling above the choir loft. This requires a special scaffolding as well as the disassembling of the organ itself. We expect the ceiling work to be completed by Easter, but the organ will not be in service until after the holiday. We will also begin work on the ceiling and the repair of some water damage over the transepts. The deteriorated marble behind the side altars has been removed and will be replaced with a modern lightweight replacement material similar to what was used in the sanctuary behind the main altar a few years ago. Work on the bell tower is likely to begin later this year. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish webpage at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Do we have your current contact information? Many households have cut the cord and rely only on their cell phones. Please email us your current phone number to qasoffice@qasparish.org. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. First Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018 13
