Matthew 22:37 BALANCE Today s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. TODAY S READINGS First Reading You shall not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in Egypt (Exodus 22:20-26). This is mentioned in Sacred Scripture. It states in 2 Mac 12:46: Therefore (Judas Maccabeus) made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. From the start, the Catholic Church has honored the memory of the dead. The Church also offered prayers in suffrage for them. At the same time the Church offered Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that they might attain the beatific vision of God. In addition, the Catholic Church commends almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job s sons were purified by their father s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? We have only one responsibility in our lives, and that is to form a relationship with God that leads us to be with Him for eternity. A loving relationship with God will lead to a loving relationship with our neighbors. And a loving relationship with our neighbors requires us to give of ourselves to them with our time, our talent and our treasure. Jesus says that the greatest among us must be our servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. A wonderful form of humility is to pray each day by saying, You re God and I m not. Let us recognize our gifts from God and then share them willingly with our neighbors. We thank God for the generosity of all those of St. Joan of Arc Parish who worked so hard to make our annual Ethnic Festival a success. They truly gave of themselves for the benefit of our Parish, and were shining examples to our visitors of what a Christian Community is all about. Without the annual proceeds of the Ethnic Festival, and without the generous support of our parishioners giving to the weekly Offertory Collection, our Parish could not meet its financial obligations. Pero resultó que Jesús contestó que todo lo que tenemos viene de Dios, por tanto todo lo que somos es de Dios. No puede existir jamás una situación o asunto a los cuales no respondamos como creyentes. La pregunta de hoy, cuál es el mandamiento más grande de la ley? busca de nuevo atrapar a Jesús para dividir la ley en mandamientos que son esenciales y mandamientos que son insignificantes. Jesús no sólo evita una vez más la trampa, sino que también hace que sea imposible para nosotros evitar la naturaleza exhaustiva de nuestro compromiso bautismal. Jesús declara el amor a Dios como el más grande y el primero de los mandamientos. Pero ese amor, que abarca a toda la persona, o sea, el corazón, el alma y la mente, exige por tanto una expresión pragmática y visible, que no es simplemente igual al primer mandamiento, sino idéntico al mismo: amar al prójimo. Las doscientas cuarenta y ocho prescripciones positivas y las trescientas sesenta y cinco negativas del Torán dependen de un estilo de vida coherente, convincente y constante, que se apoya en este amor binario. Un antiguo proverbio anglófono ofrece la siguiente advertencia: Cuidado con el dios que adoras, pues vas a llegar a lucir como él. Abandonando a los ídolos, se convirtieron al Dios vivo y verdadero, afirma Pablo, y Éxodo nos describe lo que quiere decir eso en la práctica: No hagas sufrir ni oprimas al extranjero, porque ustedes fueron extranjeros Si tomas en prenda el manto de tu prójimo, devuélveselo antes de que se ponga el sol. Hasta el manto cobertor, que también le sirve a mi prójimo de saco de dormir, está sujeto al Gran Mandamiento. Qué ojo tiene Dios para los detalles cuando los pequeños y humildes están en riesgo!
