Preschool lesson God s Gift of Light, p.2 Review Let s Use Puppets to Tell the Story! Review: (Baby Jesus in manger picture). The last few weeks we learned the true bible stories of how Jesus was born! We heard how he was born in a stable. Who knows what a stable is? (Its like a barn, where the animals stay). (Angel picture). Then we heard how, that same day, the angel came to the shepherds who were watching their sheep nearby. The angel told them that Jesus had been born -- The Savior of the world who would bring great joy and peace to people everywhere! The angel told them they would find baby Jesus lying in a manger wrapped in cloths! (Shepherds Visit Jesus picture). And when the shepherds got there, they found everything just as the angel said they would. There was baby Jesus was lying in the manger all wrapped up! (Point to baby Jesus). The shepherds were the very first ones who went to visit baby Jesus. But did you know that there were two more people came to visit Jesus soon after he was born? Let s listen close and we ll hear what happened. Bible Time - Let s Play Puppets! (Simeon puppet) This is Simeon! Simeon loved God! The Holy Spirit had promised Simeon that, before he died, he would get a chance to see the one God would send to save the people of the world! Do you think Simeon was excited? (Let children answer). I do too! A long time before, prophets had told of the special day when God would send a Savior to save the people from their sins! And Simeon would get to see him right up close! But when, he wondered? Simeon waited and waited for that exciting day. I bet Simeon got up each morning and wondered if that was the day that he would get to see the Savior of the world! But each day, it was not the day not yet. (Set Simeon out in front.) Let s tell Simeon a rhyme together: Be patient Simeon. The day is not yet. (Let children repeat that part). But soon you ll see Jesus. Don t you fret! (Let children repeat that part). So Simeon waited some more. And waited some more. (Make Simeon jump around). When would he get to see Jesus? He could hardly wait. Then one day, at just the right time, the Holy Spirit came to Simeon and said, Follow me! And the Holy Spirit led Simeon right to the temple in Jerusalem. ( Walk Simeon over to temple). A temple is God s house. It s like a church. (Point to your temple). I wonder why God wanted Simeon to go there? Simeon Meets Jesus! (Joseph, Mary with Jesus tucked in under hands). On the same day that the Holy Spirit led Simeon to the temple, Mary and Joseph also went to the temple. The law said that each family should give a sacrifice for the first baby boy in their family. So they brought two small pigeons. (Place pigeons sticker on Joseph). And they brought baby Jesus too! (Stick baby Jesus in Mary s arms). They wanted to dedicate baby Jesus to God. That means they wanted to show God, and everyone, that Jesus belonged to God. ( Walk Mary, Jesus, Joseph to temple). While Mary and Joseph were there, Simeon came up to them. (Move Simeon close to Mary, Joseph). He knew that Jesus was the one he had been waiting for! I bet Simeon was very excited, and smiling from ear to ear! (Make Simeon jump around). When Simeon saw baby Jesus, he took him in his arms!

Preschool lesson God s Gift of Light, p.3 Simeon Meets Jesus! (cont d) (Stick baby Jesus in Simeon s arms). Then he said a wonderful prayer to God in front of all the people! Here s a rhyme we can do together. I ll tell you a little of what Simeon said. (Assistant s name) will show you the other part. Rhyme with Actions: Simeon s Prayer Have an assistant lead the children in the words that aren t in bold. Rhyme: Actions: Here is the temple and here is the steeple. Fold hands, then bring index fingers up to make a pointed steeple. Simeon prayed: My eyes have seen the Place hands together in prayer. Savior of the people! Here is the temple and here is the steeple. Fold hands, then bring index fingers up to make a pointed steeple. He s the glory of Israel the ones called your Lift hands in praise. people. Flick fingers a few times. It helps us see the way that s right! Point to eyes. Let s See One More Puppet! (Mary and Joseph Puppets) Mary and Joseph were so happy and amazed about all the wonderful things that Simeon had said! Simon also told Mary that Jesus would show what was in people s hearts! We ll talk more about that a little later. Right then, someone else came to visit baby Jesus! (Anna puppet). Anna was a wise prophet who was 84 years old! She worshipped God in the temple day and night! When Anna saw baby Jesus, she (Stick baby Jesus in Anna s arms) was so excited she couldn t keep quiet: She thanked God, and spoke to the people who were looking for someone to save them from their sins! She told them all about Jesus! (Point to Jesus). What an exciting day it had been! God had sent these two wonderful people who knew all about baby Jesus even though they had never met him! After Mary and Joseph gave their pigeons, (Take pigeons from Joseph, and stick on table) it was time to go back home. (Stick Jesus back in Mary s hands) So Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus back to Galilee where they lived. ( Walk Mary, Jesus and Joseph back home).

Preschool lesson God s Gift of Light, p. 4 Group Activity: Let s Open Gifts! Let s open a gift to see another gift that God gives us. (Take the wrapped "Gift of Joy" from your basket). Who would like to open this gift for the class? (Pick a child who volunteers and let them unwrap it). Thank you (helper's name). It says, LIGHT! (Show the word Light and the light bulb). One of the gifts God gives us is Light! Simeon prayed that Jesus would be like a light to the people. And he said that Jesus would show what s in people s hearts. I ll show you what I mean: (Darkness) Here s a picture of darkness. (Point to darkness). It s hard to see when it s dark, isn t it? What might happen when we try to walk in the darkness? (Let children answer). Yes. We might bump into something, or trip and fall, because we can t see what s there! It s no fun to walk in the darkness. We need light so we can see what s there. (Multicultural children with hearts) It s the same with our hearts. When it s dark in our hearts, we can t see what s there. And sin is what s there. We ll use marks for sin. (Make marks on hearts). Sin is the wrong things that we think and do. It s our mean thoughts (Make more marks), our wrong actions (Make more marks), and our bad attitudes. (Make more marks). We don t like sin. (Draw sad face on children). Sometimes we want it to stay hidden so no one can see it. (Lay dark splotch over heart). We want it to be in the dark, so we sometimes try to forget about it, and pretend that it s not there. But when Jesus grew up, he taught us about sin. He showed people what s right and wrong. (Take off dark splotch). Jesus spoke the very words of God! That s how he shines the lights into our hearts. (Place light by heart). After we know that we have sin in our hearts, (Point to marks), we can t pretend that it s not there any more. Uh-oh. Now what will we do? Who will save us from our sin, and all that it brings? Let s see what Isaiah says. (Read Isaiah 50:10b). JESUS is the answer! Jesus taught people about sin and forgiveness because he didn t want us to stay in the darkness. He wanted us to see our sin, and not hide it any more. He wants us to be sorry for our sin, and to live God s way instead. (Read Isaiah 55:6-7). After Jesus grew up, he showed us how to love God and love people, and taught us how to live. And he did many things that other people couldn t do, by the power of God! That s because Jesus is God s Son! And, Jesus never sinned, not even once! (Child by cross. Point to cross). And when Jesus died on the cross for our sin, he was being punished for our sin. So, now, when we believe Jesus died for us, and we re sorry for our sin, we can ask him to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to come and live in our hearts. (Multicultural children). Then, because of what Jesus did for us, God forgives our sin. (Take away dark spot. Erase the marks.) And changes our heart! Then, God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us live God s way in love and kindness. Then we ll be his children, and we ll have a very bright future as we live in God s light and love! (Draw happy face on children). Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit). Then give children a chance to pray also. Let Me Pray Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for sending Jesus! Thank you that Jesus shined the light in our hearts. Thank you that he died for our sins so that we can be forgiven. Help us all to trust in Jesus for forgiveness, and learn how to live in your light! In Jesus' name.
