Preschool lesson God s Gift of Himself, p.2 Intro - Let s Hear the Shepherds Story Again! Review: (Manger scene) Last week we learned how an angel of God came to the shepherds who were watching over their sheep in a field nearby. The angel had great news! He told the shepherds that a Savior had been born! Then many more angels came down from heaven to sing praises to God! When the angels went back up to heaven, the shepherds ran off to find baby Jesus! (Point to shepherds). And when they got there, they found baby Jesus lying in the manger! (Point to baby Jesus). Everything was just as the angel told them it would be! God helped the shepherds find baby Jesus, but the shepherds didn t have to go very far to find him. They were close to where Jesus was born. Today we ll hear the story of some kings who came to look for Jesus, but they lived far, far away! Let s listen close, and we ll see how God helped them find Jesus too. Let s Pretend to Travel With the Kings! (While you re where the kings are set up, your assistant takes away the stable, keeps Mary and Joseph, adds Toddler Jesus Standup, and hides them in another place). Let s go see what s happening far away in the East. (Take children over to where kings are set up, and point to kings). What do these guys look like to you? (Let children answer). Right! They re kings. They are also called wisemen. One day the kings were watching the stars. Have assistant hold up star up between the kings and Mary/Joseph and Jesus). Oh, look over there! Look at that big, beautiful bright star! I wonder what it means? Well, if the kings are so wise, I bet they know. Hey, Mr. King, do you know what that big, bright star means? (Hold one of the kings up to your ear. Make whispering sounds). Oh, really! The king told me that It means that the Savior was born! How excited the kings were when they saw it! (Make kings jump up and down). They decided to go find this very special child who had been born! It would be a long, slow trip since they lived so far away. It was too far to walk. I think they probably rode on camels. (Kings/Camels crafts). Who wants to take the kings and help them find Jesus with me? (Give the kings to three children). Let's pretend we re going with them! We can stomp our feet to make the sound of the camels feet. (Stomp feet). Clompity-clomp, Clompity-clomp. Let s follow the star. It will show us the way. (The assitatnat holds the star up high, goes around the room a few times, then stops by the hiding place and takes the star down). Let s Follow the Star Along With the Kings! Finally, they came to Jerusalem. They looked all round, here and there, and everywhere! (Place your hand above your brow and pretend to look all around). They didn't know where to look for Jesus, so they asked, "Where we can find this special baby who was born to be King of the Jews? We want to worship him!" When King Herod heard what the kings were asking, he called together all of his helpers. This is what they told him: (Read Matthew 2:5-6). So King Herod told the kings, "Go to Bethlehem and look for the baby. When you find him, come back and tell me where he is. I want to worship him too." But, King Herod was not telling the truth. He did not really want to worship baby Jesus. Mean King Herod had evil plans. And, by this time, Jesus was no longer a baby. He was growing up. He was already about two years old.

Preschool lesson God s Gift of Himself, p. 3 Let s Help the Kings Find Jesus! So, the kings set out once again to find Jesus. (Give other children a chance to hold the kings). But how would they know where to find him in a big town? Maybe God would show them. Let s see what our Bible says. (Read Matthew 2:9-10). (Have assistant hold up Star again) Oh, look! There s the bright star again! Let s follow the star with the kings again! (Make stomping sounds again). Clompity-Clomp. Clompity-Clomp! (Assistant leads children around the room again, holding up star puppet). (Along the way, look around and say): Where could Jesus be? I know he has to be here somewhere! (Assistant stops, and hold the star over the place where Jesus and his family are hidden). The Bible tells us the star stopped over the place where Jesus was. We see that the star stopped, so Jesus must be here! Does anyone see Jesus? (Let children search). When a child finds the Jesus Standup, hold it up and say: (Child s name) found the picture of Jesus, just like God helped the kings find Jesus by leading them with the bright star! When the kings got there, they were so excited to see Jesus! (King Puppets). They knew he was the Son of God who came to save the people! Finally they found the one they had been searching for! They loved him so much! They bowed down and worshiped him. Then they gave him precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. This would be a day they would remember forever! Let's go take our seats now, and we ll hear the rest of the story. Later that night, while the kings were sleeping they had a dream. Let s pretend we re sleeping. (Lay your head on your hands). In the dream God told them not to go back to King Herod. Little Jesus would not be safe if they told mean King Herod where he lived. So, the kings went home a different way. And do you know what that mean King Herod did? He sent some men to look for Jesus, and they had evil plans! Uh oh. Who would keep Jesus safe? Joseph s Dream God would keep Jesus safe! Just at the right time, Joseph also had a dream. Let s pretend we re sleeping. (Lay your head on hands). In the dream, God told Joseph, "Get up! Take Mary and Jesus! Go to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. King Herod is coming to take Jesus away!" Oh, no! Let s see what Joseph does. Joseph obeyed God. He got up right away. He ran and woke up Mary and Jesus. And during the night, and they went as fast as they could, far away to Egypt. (Give three children one character each: Mary, Joseph, Jesus. Take the children to a different area of the room). C mon. Let s take them to Egypt! "Hurry, Joseph, hurry!" Finally they got there! Now they could rest. Now Jesus would be safe with his family. And God would watch over them. Talk Time: Let s Open Gifts! (Booklet Craft. Turn pages as you mention each gift). So far we learned that some of the gifts that God gives us are joy, love, peace and light. Let s open another gift to see what else God gives us! (Take the Himself gift from the basket). Who would like to open this gift for us? (Give the gift to a child who didn t get a king). Thank you (child s name) for helping us today. (Let the child open the gift.) It says, Himself! Another gift God gives us is himself! (Take the sticker off or turn to that page in the booklet). I ll show you what I mean:

Preschool lesson God s Gift of Himself, p. 4 Let s Play Stickers and Learn About Jesus! We know that Jesus is the Son of God. But did you know that Jesus is God too? That s right. It s a little hard to understand. I ll try to explain: (Cupcake/Trinity Sticker Activity). Let s put a cupcake together and see how many parts it has. Let s count together. (Count with children as you lay down the different parts). The cake is - 1. The icing is - 2. The filling is - 3. It s made of three different parts: All of them together (Move your finger around to all three) make up one cupcake. (Place the Sticker with the word cupcake over the three parts). How many cupcakes do we have? 1 Our great God is also three in one! Let s count together. (Lay down each as you say the name). God the Father is - 1. Jesus the Son is - 2. The Holy Spirit makes - 3. All three persons together make up one great God! (Move your finger around to all three. Place the One God sticker on top). It s o.k. if you don t understand all that. We ll understand better as we learn and grow together. Now let s talk about the story. Finding Jesus / Finding God Today we heard the story of how the kings went to look for Jesus. We pretended to be with the kings, and we looked for Jesus too! But we were just pretending. And, that was just a little picture of the back of Jesus that we found. Did you know that there's a promise for us in the Bible about how we can find God for real? (Read Jer. 29:13). God promises that if we seek him with all our heart that we will find him! And then it will really be him, not just a little picture. The kings travelled very, very far to find Jesus. They travelled for many, many days. They made it the most important thing. They didn t even know how they would find Jesus. They just trusted God. And God led them right to the child Jesus by giving them the bright star to follow! But, we don t have a star to follow, so how can we find God? Well, God gave us something else: He gave us his words, the Bible. And he gave us a way to talk to him too! We can pray to our great God, and he hears us! And we can worship him too, and tell him how wonderful we think he is! So, let's remember God's promise that we will find him, when we seek him with all our heart! Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you) Let Me Pray Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much that you gave us your Son Jesus! Thank you for giving us the gift of yourself! We love you so much! Thank you for your awesome promise that we will find you when we seek you with all our heart! In Jesus' name we pray.

Nativity Preschool and Toddler Activities Week 5 (Kings Visit Jesus) Warm-up Activity: Let s Play With Kings! Set out the Kings puzzles or kings puppets for children to play with. You could also have children start coloring their craft, since this lesson has an extra Talk Time activity. If you sew, and you re ambitious, you could make a simple king outfit for a plush doll, such as Bob the Builder. Make a crown out of metallic paper (not aluminum foil, as it can cut) or glitter foam sheets, or use metallic crayons on cardboard. Snack Ideas Gifts: Give 1/2 of a graham cracker and fruit roll-ups. The graham cracker is the gift, and the fruit roll-ups are ribbons to decorate their gift. Kings: Carefully cut yellow bell pepper (or other colors) ahead of time in the shape of king s crowns. Use a flavored rice cake for the face, raisins for eyes. Let kids make a mouth or beard out of different colors of fruit-roll-ups. Circle Talk Time Activity Let s Open Gifts!
