TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SEPTEMBER 22, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Monday is the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, popularly known as Padre Pio. When Pope John Paul II canonized him in June of 2002 before a jubilant crowd of 300,000 in Rome, news accounts of his elevation tended to focus on the fifty years he bore the stigmata (hand wounds similar to hose Our Lord suffered during his passion and death), the miraculous healings granted to seekers of his intercessory help, or the rumored occurrences of bi-location (simultaneous presence in two different places). The New York Times reporter assigned to cover the story, adopting a common approach of secular journalism, seemed inordinately interested in the merchandizing success of the vendors who offered religious articles and souvenirs to those who wished to buy them. What is it that draws between 7 and 8 million visitors a year to San Giovanni Rotundo, the small town in southern Italy where Padre Pio lived for most of his life as a Franciscan Capuchin monk? (In Italy, only St. Peter s Basilica draws more pilgrims.) Those who met the famous friar, who lived from 1887-1968, often mentioned his astounding personal magnetism, the medically inexplicable cures he brought about, and his extraordinarily effective ministry as a confessor. Mario Bruschi, an American who went to confession to Padre Pio in 1957 and then went on to devote his life to speaking about him internationally, recalled that confession in an interview with the Catholic newspaper Our Sunday Visitor: When he looked at you, you knew there was a God. Through confession, he made you feel that God is there for us through His love and mercy. Mr. Bruschi has started 50 of the 125 Padre Pio prayer groups that exist in the United States. (Worldwide there are 4,000.) The prayer groups, all under the spiritual direction of priests, pray in church before the Blessed Sacrament: saying the rosary, meditating, and invoking Mary. Many people have been converted to the Church, or have returned to it, through devotion to St. Pio. The National Centre for Padre Pio in Barto, PA, near Allentown, is open Monday through Saturday. It s an easy and beautiful drive. Call 215-845-3000 or go to padrepio.org for directions or other information. Msgr. David Hubba 3 SJC PARISH DAY OF SERVICE OCTOBER 19 Our Parish Day of Service is a wonderful opportunity for all adults, youth and families in our parish to come together and to serve our community in the true spirit of our Lord. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 16: 1-13. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells a story about a man who was a steward, a person who took care of a rich man s property. The rich man found out that his steward was spending his money foolishly and was going to fire him. The steward knew he would have nowhere to live without his job, so he called in the people who owed the rich man money and forgave half their debt in the hope that they would help him after he was fired. The rich man praised the steward because he planned for his future. Since everything we have comes from God we can be called stewards of God s gifts. God wants each of us to use our different gifts and talents to help the Kingdom of God to grow. God does not want us to be dishonest like the steward was at the beginning of the Gospel story. He wants us to do what is just and right. But God also wants us to share what we have to help others. He wants us to make good choices and to make a difference in our world. If we do these things, we are planning for our own future with God in heaven. MISSION OF THE WEEK Share your gifts. Try teaching a younger child something you are good at, such as sports, reading, drawing, dancing or another talent. 6 Jesus tells us to be good stewards of God s gifts.
