The e-link Sept 2018 Fairview United Methodist Church Maryville, Tennessee September 9 September 15, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk Each year, around this time, I find I am amused (as I believe some of you are) whenever I hear and read the words, Fire in the Choir. It s the annual official invitation to join, rejoin, or try-out our wonderful worship choir here at Fairview UMC. I believe you know how blessed we are to have the music ministry we have here. Week-after-week our music ministry does a consistently amazing work of leading us in singing to the Lord. Their job is not to entertain us, but to lead us into the presence of God. Just about everyone who moves from Fairview to another church tells us how much they miss worship at Fairview. They come to realize there is Fire in the Choir, as we know there s Fire in the Choir! Obviously, I ve been thinking about this recently. As I said, it is not the job of our music ministry to entertain us, it s to lead us, and when we come to worship, and not just come to church, when we allow them to lead us, I propose to you, there is Power in the Pew. We become engaged in what we are really here to do, to sing to the Lord. The more we put our self, our flesh aside, and enter into worship, the more we experience the power of God moving in us and about us. The more we experience His power, the more transformed we are, worship becomes about the Holy dwelling in our midst, rather than ourselves. I ve heard this quote twice recently from different ones of you. Someone (not at Fairview) said, I didn t get much out of the sermon today! The person to whom they were speaking said, I didn t know we were there to worship you. Whether it is the sermon, or the music, the object of our worship is never us, it is always God. It s not about what we get out of it, it s about what we give to God, it s about what God gets out of it. Would God say, I didn t get much out of your worship today. I came back across Genesis 28:17, where Jacob has been dreaming. When he wakes up he says, What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven. When there s Power in the Pew, when our lives are being transformed through worship, we come to realize we are in the very house of God, and it becomes for us the gateway to heaven. When there s this kind of Power in the Pew you can t help but go tell others about it, which is the most natural form of witness and evangelism I know of; in fact, it is called worship evangelism. I give thanks to God there is Fire in the Choir. As I have shared with you before, I am so blessed to sit and stand at the front of the house of God each Sunday morning and to worship before I preach. I recognize the fire, and I feel the power. I look forward to singing to the Lord with you this Sunday; and to experiencing His power moving among us! With my love and prayers, Pastor Mickey

Acolyte Training for children in the 2nd-6th grades will be Sunday, September 16, immediately following the 11 am worship service! We'll meet first in the church's small dining room for some lunch and for learning about being an acolyte, then we go to the sanctuary to practice and learn more about what being an acolyte means. Acolytes have been part of the church in one form or another for nearly 2,000 years! The word acolyte comes from the Greek word akolouthos, meaning follower, a helper or assistant. "Jesus said: 'I am the light of the world'" (John 8:12). The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus coming into the presence of the worshiping community. Many congregations use two candles on the altar to point out that Jesus was both a human being and God. If you have any questions, you may contact Millie Stoutt at either 621-6594 or mstoutt@utk.edu. Acolytes are used at both the 8:30 am and 11 am services. (Note to our current acolytes: you are welcome to join us and assist with the training.) Kids Choirs Begin THIS Sunday, 9/9 at 5:00 PM!!! Teaching videos are key in understanding this study. Revisit familiar stories and historical figures, challenge your basic knowledge, and discover deeper meanings in the text. As God reveals Himself through Scripture, we can only begin to understand ourselves when we first glimpse the character, attributes, and promises of our Creator. Barbara Thompson will be facilitating this study on Monday nights, starting September 10. The group will meet at 6:15 pm in Room A203. To reserve a book, contact Yvonne at yshelgren@fairview-umc.org. Why her? How many times have you asked yourself that question? How many times have you felt like you couldn t measure up no matter how hard you tried? We ve all been there. Over 6 sessions, uncover truths you need to arm yourself with when combatting comparison by studying the biblical account of Rachel & Leah. Learn to be content without becoming complacent, and discover godly wisdom to quiet the incessant Why Her? question in your head. Develop greater awareness of your insecurities, and learn to stop the lies in their tracks. Because the truth will set you free, and free women don t have to measure up to anyone. Not even her. Jennifer Kirst will be facilitating this study on Tuesday nights beginning September 11 at 6:15 pm in the Remedy Coffee Shop. To reserve a book, contact Yvonne at yshelgren@fairview-umc.org.
