1 Christ Fellowship Grapevine T h e P r o - A c t i v e C h u r c h : W h y We C a n t A f fo r d To J u s t E x i s t Fall 2017 What makes a town, city, state or nation.., a great place to live?? How would you answer this question for Hollister?? Here's a few answers recently given to this question: A great place to raise kids! The high school.., being a Baler!! Location, location, location!! Out in the middle of no where, but minutes from everywhere! It's the birthplace of the American biker, of course It's the true California The people! Small town over big city, anytime! Now to be honest, I would have been shocked if anyone answered the question, What makes Hollister a great place to live? With: The church in Hollister!! but it is interesting to ponder: how important is the church (city-wide church or our church) in our town? How about in our state or even our nation? Maybe a better way to ask it is; what would be missing or lacking if the church just suddenly ceased to operate? (By the church, I'm primarily thinking of the people in our community who intentionally live with Jesus as Lord). Would the people of our community who do not know Jesus even notice? Hmmmmmmm... I want to think Jesus' followers here in Hollister are the backbone of care, compassion, inclusion and mercy in our community! I also want to believe that we at Christ Fellowship see ourselves (and other followers of Jesus) as holding the key that unlocks the door to hope, healing and meaning for life for all who live within our reach. And if that is true, it seems like it might be a critical time in history to begin to passionately live like we believe that Jesus, within us, is the answer. For us at Christ Fellowship that means: Doing our best to roll out the welcome mat for any and all in our community Availing ourselves to serve others as never before (through prayer, hands-on help, mission, etc) Creating opportunities for more and more people to gather to study/hear God's word Faithfully praying for our friends, ministry, community, nation and beyond Intentionally listening for the voice of the Holy Spirit to tell us, who and what next? Regularly coming together with expectant hearts to meet the Lord in worship In times of crises, we have seen the church arise like none other!! This IS our time, will you avail your heart, mind, ears, hands and feet to follow God's lead in the days ahead? If you do, you will never regret it! Pastor Mike

2 F R O M T H E P A S T O R : Sermon Series- The Bible As One Story: A Book By Book Journey Thru God s Word I've never even heard of that book in the Bible, let alone read it! What an awesome story! I'm finally seeing how the pieces of the Bible fit together I've read more of the Bible on my own this year than ever before! I can't wait to see how the New Testament is connected to the Old (Testament) We have finally arrived!! As of August we reached the New Testament.., and the Good News is, Jesus is still Messiah, the Lamb of God who came into the world :-)! Our 30 week tour through the 39 books of the Old Testament reminded us of God's faithfulness to establish, bless, rescue and redeem all who cry out to Him! The same is true today, praise God..., and as we travel through the New Testament, we will see how Jesus was, AND STILL IS, the perfect representation of God on Earth!! Come join the fun and adventure on Sunday mornings as we become familiar with the big picture or the whole story of the Bible!!~ It's not as complicated as you might think.., and even though it's an ancient story by modern standards, it still holds the recipe of a fulfilling life for today!! Here's the schedule, hop on in and read a week ahead if you like!! Keeping a bible in a place where you might have 10 minutes a day, is a GREAT way to make it through a book a week. (Then you can also tell your friends you read a book a week.., and they will be impressed!!! :-) Sept. 24 th Acts (A History of the Birth of The Church) Oct. 1 st Romans (The Favorite Book of Martin Luther and John Wesley to name a few) Oct. 8 th Corinthians (Standing Against the Tide of Culture) Oct. 15 th Galatians (Grace vs. Law) Oct. 22 nd Ephesians (Our New Identity in Christ) Oct. 29 th Philippians (The Life Worth Living) Nov. 5 th Colossians (Why Keeping Jesus In View Matters) Music We will continue to have pick up choir on the third Sunday of every month. Rehearsal at 9am Sunday morning. Everyone is welcome! Choir rehearsal on Thursday night has been cancelled for the season. In late November we will start up choir rehearsals again for the Christmas season. If you have thought about joining choir but afraid of the commitment that will be the perfect time to bring your gift! On Wednesday evenings, Rachel leads worship time with the youth group in the youth room around 7:15pm. If you have any questions, or would like more information on any of our music groups, please contact Rachel at rachelromina@gmail.com September 24th Legacy youth October 15th Pick Up Choir (arrive at 9am) October 22nd Legacy Youth October 29th Beverly Blount Are you interested in playing the Handbells? 3 Our First Annual Ministry Fair was very informative and productive! Sharing information about the different ministries to learn how the parts of the Body work together and where YOU can get connected! Do you know all the wonderful things that Christ Fellowship has in the works in the life of our church and community wide? There are so many reasons to get involved and not least of all so that you can BE BLESSED!! You have something to offer and will be thoroughly blessed in return! Head Usher Training October 1st after church. If you are currently serving as a head usher or would like to learn more please join us for a brief meeting and to go over the responsibilities and duties that this vital position holds. Be a Blessing and Be Blessed! Church On All Cylinders! Our church, Christ Fellowship, actually exceeds the status quo when it comes to percentage of church members Hands on involved in the ministry of a local church. By hands-on we mean intentionally and regularly serving in some capacity! Some serve as Elders or Deacons, some serve by mowing the church lawn...it all matters in our effort together to build the Kingdom of God on Earth! There s a woman in our church who prays for our ministry, our staff and our individual prayer requests on a daily basis! That's an awesome ministry!! Do you have an identifiable, regular and intentional role in the life our ministry together? If not, would you consider seriously seeking the role God would have you fill in the ministry of our church? Our goal, and it s a big one, is that 100% of our regular attenders would be able to identify their specific role in the ministry of our church. God has led you here for a reason, His Kingdom reason! Start a conversation about this with Him today! Service Opportunities Call the church office for details! Children s Ministries A huge thank you to Miss Doris for her dedication to Children s Ministry for so many years. Doris was dedicated to running Sunday School, Kid s Club, and VBS. We wish her well on her retirement. She has touched so many little lives with the love of Jesus! Children s Ministry needs volunteers- We all have memories of our Sunday School Days as young children. We need you to help make these memories for our Pre K-5 th grade children. Our Sunday School program is a three week rotation with lessons and supplies all ready. All you need to do it commit to teach for 3 weeks in a row and show up. The lessons for the next few months are based around Moses. If you are available for 3 weeks in October, November, or December please contact Jenny at jjbernosky@gmail.com. Our children depend on us to teach them to hear the Word of God and to know Jesus! Kid s Club-Do you have children ages 5-12? We would love for you to bring your children to Kid s Club on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30. Pastor Mike will be there and of course we always need volunteers to help out. Spread the word- Send your sons and daughters! Let us help them grow up with Jesus!! If transportation is a problem, call the church office, we may be able to help!! ( ) Bottom line If you want your child here we want them here too!! Legacy Youth Group What an AMAZING Summer!!! We had over 40 kids attend Senior and Junior high Summer Camp at Mount Herman. Even more impressive than that, three of our own, Katie, Meghan, and Janelle, worked the entire Summer as counselors at camp. Our group also enjoyed pool parties, a San Jose Giants game, and a beach trip and super fun trivia night! We meet Wednesday nights 6:30 8:30. Our new study series is "Life in 6 Words." The focus of this study will dive into the theology of the gospel message, unpacking core terms and concepts every follower of Jesus needs to grasp to fully understand the Good News. This curriculum will challenge our teenagers with truths that have the power to transform their own lives as well as enable them to more fully explain God s great story to their friends. We are excited for what God has planned for our youth this coming year. We appreciate your continued prayers and support. The Youth Team

Starts 9/27 Thursday Morning 10am Broken and Blessed Tracing the story of the Genesis family from Adam and Eve through the generations to Joseph, bringing blessings from brokenness. We will see that despite both good and bad traits that were passed down, God worked for good in every generation,- determined to transform those with in and outside the family bloodlines. The study ends with the story of Joseph, who decided to stop the cycle of previous generations, offering forgiveness and grace to his brothers. Through these stories of Genesis, New Testament teaching about family, and stories of contemporary families changed and used by God, this study shows us how God can use our own imperfect families to bring blessing in a hurting and broken world. Thursday Evening 7-8:40 pm Bible Study Fellowship BSF is an interdenominational Bible study. We are studying Romans this year.
