TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It's a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you're stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you're in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us--nation, parish church, occupation, illness--can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the "communion of saints" is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life's struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. NINE DAY NOVENA FOR THE ABUSE CRISIS: Accountability, Transparency and Healing The Catholic Church is again in crisis from the evil committed by some priests and bishops. This is hurting the body of Christ, and it must stop. This novena is meant to help us pray for the victims of these terrible acts and for the Church. We pray that the victims and their families can find peace. We pray that all the abuse stops and that any priests and bishops involved will be held accountable. We also pray for the many clergy who have faithfully served their people, as well as those in need of healing. We pray for our Church, that the light of transparency will dispel the darkness of secrets and renew trust. Please start praying this novena for our Church: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Father in Heaven, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Holy Spirit, comfort us, give us clarity, and bring light to this darkness and evil. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Saint Peter, pray for the Church, that it may be re-built, healed, and made holy. St. Charles Lwanga and St. Monica, pray for the abused, the survivors and for justice. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for reform and restoration of the clergy. St. John Vianney, pray for the holiness of priests and bishops. St. Benedict, pray that this evil be cast out of the Church. St. Anthony, pray for us to find the way forward. St. Paul, pray for the bishops that they may be fearless in confronting other bishops. St. Augustine, pray for true repentance and transparency. St. Dymphna, pray for consolation for the heartache, depression and anxiety this evil has caused. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.. ST. GEORGE WOMEN S COUNCIL Next Meeting: Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 10am Holiday Boutique: Saturday, November 17 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT ST.
