Mt. Zion Church of Ontario Statement to Read before Leading Responsive Reading Acts 2:41-47 (NASB) Good Morning! Our theme for 2018 is Living for God-Sized Results! Join me in reading the refreshing teaching from Jesus, regarding living for God-sized results. Minister 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. Congregation 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Minister 43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. Congregation 44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; Minister Everyone 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. 3

Healthy Reverence for God in our Giving Acts 5:1-11 Pastor Brian Kennedy, Sr. TEXT QUESTIONS TO PASTOR AS HE IS PREACHING TO: (909) 638-2696 Review of how God resources the advancement of the gospel (Acts 4:32-37). God gives us one-mindedness among each other (Acts 1:14, 24, 2:1, 14, 42; 4:23-24, 32). God answers our prayers with displays of His presence and power (Acts 4:24, 29-31; 33). God uses His children to give generous financial gifts to His church (Acts 4:34-37). Key Statement: God gave a lesson on holdback giving to teach healthy reverence for Him. A. God is Displeased with Holdback Giving (Acts 5:1-11). 1. Ananias and Sapphira, had a piece of land to sell and contribute (v. 1). 2. Where did Ananias and Sapphira get their land (James 1:17)? 3. What was the purpose for their contribution (Acts 4:34-37)? 4. Despite the good cause, Ananias and Sapphira, conspired to holdback on God (v. 2). Example: Let s say they sold the property for $350,000.00. If they kept $50,000.00 and pretended to sell the land for $300,000.00 their holdback was $50,000.00. In this example they would have laid $300,000.00 at the Apostles feet and lied about the sell price. FYI, they did have a stewardship option in their giving, but by lying they forfeited their option (Acts 5:4). 5. God was displeased with Ananias holdback giving (v. 3). a. Who is the instigator of lying and holdback giving (v. 3, cf. John 8:44)? b. Did Ananias have any stewardship options (v. 4)? c. When we are not honest in our giving, what are we really doing (v. 4)? 6. God s displeasure resulted in the immediate death of Ananias (v. 5). 7. God s display of displeasure developed a healthy reverence among others (v. 5). Note: Perhaps, the immediate removal and burial of Ananias (quick clean up) speaks to God s zero tolerance for us holding back what He has generously given to us (v. 6). 8. God was displeased with Sapphira s holdback giving (vs. 7-8). a. Blindly following sinful behavior has deadly consequences (vs. 9-10). b. When an authority figure instructs us to disobey God, what should we do (Acts 4:19-20; 5:29)? 9. God s swift judgment was public, and helped both Christians and non-christians develop a healthy reverence for Him (v. 11). Introspection: fully examine what you are giving to God in time, talents, and treasures. Are you guilty of holdback giving to God? What has God clearly called you to give to His church? What lie is Satan feeding you that stops you from reverencing God giving back what God graciously gave to you? God is displeased with holdback giving. Personal : Dear Lord, I desire to possess a healthy reverence for You. I acknowledge that You provided and own all the assets entrusted to my care. You are very kind and I thank You from the depths of my heart. Father, as a good steward over all that You entrust to my care, I realize that as the Owner, You have the right to use anything You entrusted to me for Your eternal purpose. I ask that You keep my heart open, and my ears attentive so that I willingly and joyfully give back to You any time, talents, or treasures You request from me. Father, protect me from holdback giving in Your church. I live to love and serve 8 You. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
