September 2017 Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church The Faith Lutheran Newsletter is a monthly publication of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Volume 78 Issue 12 9 From Pastor Scudder s Desk Weekly Schedule: & Adult Bible Study 8:15 am D & T Classes Sundays 11:00am Thursday Men s Bible Study Special Activities: Board of Elders September 7 @ Board of Ed. September 11 @ Church Council September 12 @ 6:30pm Lutheran Hour 7 a.m. Sunday KILJ FM 105.5 KOKX 95.3 10:30 a.m. Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Prov. 22:6) This verse from Proverbs has been used in other newsletters as we would close out the school year. Well, with the new school year already underway, what a better time to revisit the subject. But, not just for the sake of the children who will be traversing the halls of our schools but to all of us, for we are all children of God! In the Adult Bible class we are beginning a rather in-depth study of the foundations of our faith. It is my prayer and desire that we as families within the family of God will have an ever-increasing hunger and thirst for God s Word and what it means to our Lutheran way of life. To that end over the next few months I d like to encourage you to begin a review of our Lutheran Confessions. To begin I d like to share with you a brief section from an article in a Lutheran journal called LOGIA, written by Wilhelm Loehe, the man that C.F. W. Walther called the spiritual father of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Loehe had this to say about the Lutheran confessions: I declare myself for the Lutheran Church for the sake of the treasure. The Lutheran Church lacks many things I would like to see in it, but it has something that lets it be the true church despite all shortcomings, and for the sake of which I find it easy and beautiful to be faithful to it in its outward misery. Do you know what I am talking about? I am talking about its utterly pure confession and its pure doctrine in conformity to its confession. Who has ever proved that its confession is in error in any doctrinal article? When speaking of its confession, I am not only talking about the Augsburg Confession, but about the entire Book of Concord, from the Augsburg Confession all the way to the Formula of Concord. You do not know these writings, dear reader, otherwise you d agree with me. Get to know them and you will agree. What is more beautiful, lovely, powerful, and lively than Luther s catechisms? What is more catholic (note little c ) than the Augsburg Confession and its Apology? What is more thoughtful and bold than the Smalcald Articles? And what is slandered more wrongfully than the beautiful Formula of Concord in its clean but mild definition of all teachings? Dear reader, I repeat, you do not know your Church s confessions of faith. Get to know them in order to know why you adhere to your church. If you do not have a Book of Concord, Concordia Publishing House has a very nice readers edition, which even gives a little commentary and history behind each of the parts. Please let me know if you d like to order one. If there is interest, no matter how few, we will organize a study group for these wonderful documents! Continued on page 4

Youth News (Grades 6-12) For September the youth are invited to come join us at Old Threshers. All of your help is greatly appreciated. Would love to see every one come and help. Question: to 1:17) What day were the planets created? God set them in the firmament of the heavens give light on the earth (Genesis According to God s Word, bodies out in space, like the sun, moon, and stars, were created on day 4 of the creation week. This is found in Genesis 1:14-19. God called the sun, the greater light and it dominates the day. God called the moon, the lesser light and it dominates the night. Genesis 1:16 says. He (God) made the stars also. The word that we translate stars also includes planets, comets, asteroids, and so on. Many people incorrectly guess that the solar system and the planets formed from a spinning and collapsing nebula (a cloud of goas and dust) with the sun at the center and the planets, asteroids, and so on at various distances. This has never been observed or repeated; it is just a story to try to explain the universe without God. God, who knows all things and who was there at the beginning, revealed in His Word that He was responsible for creating the sun, moon, and stars (including the planets). Be careful about the stories that man tells, especially when the disagree with God s Word. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man (Psalm 118:8) Next months question: What is the purpose of the stars Remember kids, if you have a question about God, the Bible, Church, please write it down and place it in Pastor Scudder s mailbox, or e-mail it to him at pastorscuddermr@gmail.com Bible References: Genesis 1:14, Genesis 1:17, Psalm 136:9; Genesis 15:5; Deuteronomy 10:22; Psalm 19:1

We would like everyone who loves to sing to the glory of God to come join us. We practice every Tuesday night at 6:30 PM and sing usually on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, plus any and all special occasions. We can use all voices who would like to join us. There is no audition--just come and sing with us. From Pastor Desk Continued will begin with Rally Day on September 11 th. If you have ever thought about giving of your time and talents so that we might bring up our children in the training and instruction of the Lord, please consider offering such gifts in the form of teaching. The material used is prepared well enough that preparation time for each lesson is short. Plus, we have teachers meetings where each lesson is gone over to give some highlights and teaching points. Please speak to either Paulette Shappell or Pastor Scudder if you are interested. Teaching is a great way to review all these treasures of Scripture for yourself! By The Way (BTW), why haven t you considered teaching before? Confirmation Classes Confirmation will begin with orientation on the evening of September 6 th (Wednesday @ 5:30 PM) Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 13 th @ 6:00 PM. Letters have gone out from the church office for this. If you have not received one and believe that you have a child who should be in these (5 th, 6 th, 7 th, & 8 th grades), please speak with Pastor Scudder, ASAP. The Lord be with you Amen.
