If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter's, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the "Mother Church" of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don't know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday's feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. II WEDDING BANNS Daniel Jeffrey Kendro + Christina Marie Riffle RIGHT AND WRONG What is morally wrong can never be politically right. --Anthony Ashley Cooper FAMILY PERSPECTIVES It is wrong when adults put on a front for show like in today s Gospel. In our families we must love, affirm and appreciate others for who they are and not for who we want them to be. Humility and loving attention are the keys. St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, November 5, 2017 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR During the month of November which began with All Saints Day on November 1, we remember, pray for and with our departed loved ones. A few people I know have developed a significant spiritual practice of remembering and giving thanks for a different deceased family member or friend each of the four weeks of November especially at Sunday Eucharist. Remembrance is at the heart of our worship. We remember Jesus Christ's life, passion, death, and resurrection. Every time we celebrate Mass we are meant to experience our deep communion with the Lord Jesus Christ, with one another, and with all believers who have gone before us to the ultimate glory of God's everlasting love. We understandably grieve the separation of loved ones who are no longer here with us sharing our earthly existence. We find our hope through the tears that death does not have the final say. Jesus, our good Shepherd, brings us through death to eternal life. We are called to be there for one another when there is a loss. More important than the words we say is being present to another, having a listening heart, and a compassionate soul. A CATHOLIC-BASED PERSPECTIVE ON DEALING WITH CONFLICT Father Norm will facilitate an interactive conversation on A Catholic-based Perspective on Dealing with Conflict at St. Hilary, Thursday, November 16, at 7 p.m. in the Gathering Area. In this time of conflict and division in family, our community, and our country, how as followers of Jesus should we be looking at these situations and responding to them? What in our Catholic spiritual wisdom and practice can help us? All are invited, especially our parish community as we collaborate with St. Hilary on several programs. The holidays are special days that come filled with family times and memories. For those grieving the loss of a loved one, the holidays may be especially difficult. St. Hilary s Parish along with Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, are pleased to offer the Companions on a Journey: Coping with the Holidays - Thanksgiving program, Thursday, Nov. 9, 6:30-8:30 pm in the Spiritual Center Lower Level Meeting rooms. All are welcome! Please contact Beth Rado with questions: 330-867-1055, x206 or brado@sthilarychurch.org. St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Six Sunday, November 5, 2017 HOT MEALS Once again St. Vincent de Paul Parish is providing the meal for the working poor and homeless held at St. Bernard Church on Sunday, November 26. What a wonderful way to show our thankfulness for our many blessings! Please help us feed these 250 plus members of the Akron area. There are two ways to help. First, consider making a donation to offset the food purchased for the meal. Cash or check donations made payable to St. Vincent de Paul Church, marked on the envelope, "Hot Meals", may be dropped in the collection at any Mass. Second, come and work the meal with us. You must be 14 years of age or older to help serve on November 26. We are looking for volunteers to help us 4-7 p.m. Minors must be accompanied by a parent if it is their first time working. If you have any questions, please contact Ellen at 330-535-3135 x 101 or 330-864-5484 or Marimargaret at 330-535-3135. THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today's Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
